XCOM: Enemy Unknown

No, that's the worst part--no damage, level just started, and then BOOM! Kiss half my squad goodbye.

It's a good game and I like it, but this has happened enough to discourage me from finishing.

Just finished the game, liked it a lot. Only a single member of my team survived the last mission which amused me. The final psychic power you get is beastly. Managed to keep all my countries save for Japan and India who left after the first month.

I'm afraid to say anything lest I offend Big Green again, but here goes...

The cars should absolutely not be exploding if they haven't taken any damage. It sounds like a bug. The only time any vehicle should explode is if it's taken damage, and even then you'll have the next turn to move your people away from it. Very unusual.

Yeah, it's very unexplained and instantaneous. Might have to completely restart given that it's happened to several save files...:cmad:

So after telling myself I was going to take a break I am downloading the XCOM DLC.

What does the DLC entail? I didn't even know it was out.

From my admittedly brief research: apparently its a set of Council missions that take place in China.

Though I just found out I need to start a new game to play them: booo.

I'll get around to them though.

Yeah, having to restart is the only thing that's stopped me from jumping right to the DLC, though I'm a little unsure whether it's really worth the $7. The missions do sound kind of neat, though, especially the third one.

Then again, maybe I should just restart on a higher difficulty. Normal is painfully easy.

I don't like the DLC coz it's essentially just 3 missions, some customization options and a powerful squad member. I'm not buying it coz it's not substantial content and it even grants you an advantage early on.

Hmm...I'm not sure I'll bother either. The game still has plenty of replayability as it currently stands. Unless they release like, a whole new story branch or something, then I'm content for now.

Yeah I figured it would be an alternate campaign you could start up that would run for something like 8-12 missions. Hurm, that's what I get for making an impulse buy after finishing the game. :/

Definitely. My GOTY for 2012, without a doubt.

XCOM's 'Second Wave' DLC available today, adds new gameplay options

Today marks the announcement and release of XCOM's second batch of DLC, "Second Wave," on all available platforms. The new content comes via a free update, adding multiple new options designed to appeal to players looking for a new and different challenge. Specifically, the update adds a new menu of options that significantly alter the way XCOM is played.

Damage Roulette, for example, gives all weapons a much wider range of damage – potentially stealing a killing blow or possibly bestowing a last ditch pistol shot with extra punch. Another option, Not Created Equally, gives all rookie soldiers random stats, while Hidden Potential causes stats to increase randomly with each promotion. Firaxis designer Jake Solomon tells Joystiq that these options allow for more versatile soldiers, even some that go against the grain of their classes. Heavies with incredible accuracy? It could happen.

ok I'm out for tonight

This looks better than the first DLC pack in terms of adding something, but I think I'll pass on actually using any of those. I feel the game is fine enough difficulty wise for my purposes. I am but a simple gamer.

Holding out for them adding a new campaign. /crosses fingers

I'll experiment with it, but my initial reaction is pretty much the same. Maybe it'll surprise and be really cool, but the game seems pretty sweet without a sort of...perk system?

While Firaxis’ Jake Solomon and I were talking about the addition of The Second Wave to XCOM: Enemy Unknown, our conversation shifted to the game’s poorly-received first paid DLC, Slingshot. From there, he also reflected on players’ response to XCOM’s difficulty and how 2012 was a banner year for “consequence” as a concept in video games.

Seems like DLC? But I'm keen for an all new game!

So, I just bought XCOM (got for $25 and some change used at gamestop). I'm curious, are the two pieces of DLC useful for someone like me starting it now? Are they things that are kinda sewn into the main game or are they best off getting afterwards?

Second Wave is free and I believe should patch in automatically. It's just a bunch of different rules options but great after you beat the game and want to shake things up.

You'll have to start a new game after getting Slingshot. I didn't play it myself; iirc a lot of people found it underwhelming and not worth the price.

Second wave is indeed free and it definitely amps up the replayability of the game. You don't need Slingshot in order to use the second wave content.

Also, Slingshot wasn't the bad, the only reason I picked it up was so that Firaxis would continue making more X-Com. A few of us complained on the forums, and they got the message that we wanted more substantial content that was less linear. They said that they got the message and I believe are gearing up for an X-Com expansion.

They called it Enemy Within, but I don't know if that's the final title.
