XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Yeah, I had to restart my first game because everything just completely went sideways at a certain point.

I think that's at the point I am, I just got a satellite over Africa but Canada and the UK are about to bail out and I've already lost 5 countries.

Blast.

Debating if I want to immediately start a new game or mess with Dragonborn

So I'm a decent amount into my second play through, I've lost India and Japan but everyone else seems okay more or less. Just need to keep getting satellites up is my mantra at the moment. I feel like something is going to come out of nowhere and send all this hard work spiraling at any moment. :(

I was doing good until the Cyberdisc's killed my best squad members. FML

That's XCOM, baby.

XCOM is a harsh mistess. :(

Same, god those things are so nasty. I lost a chunk of my elite solders to damned thing. I managed to save my Col. Sniper but I'm feeling the crunch of losing those guys now. Still, I'm getting there...

Stay strong brother. They destroyed me on a terror mission. Crystallids, and Cyberdisc's ruined my game.

I made a point of taking out the Disc's as soon as they appeared and never had much of a problem. The worst is when they lob a grenade, but usually with a couple of rockets and *maybe* another shot or two, they should go down before getting a shot off.

I will also say that -depending on your play style- snipers are the freakin' business. Once my sniper was good enough, I had him taking over half the kills on each level. By the end of the game the guy was death incarnate, often killing 3 or more aliens within a single turn and still having Overwatch on top of that. Invest in your snipers people! :D

Snipers are definitely a mainstay in my squad.

I was fine till the terror mission. But I agree the snipers are the bees knees.

A funny thing I found: Once, quite late into the game, I dismantled the Officer Training Facility in order to make more room. What I didn't realize was, this meant I could now only take four soldiers instead of the usual six. The next mission was a terror mission -Everything was thrown at me, and I got through without a single injury and saved 13/18 civilians. After that I did several more missions while awaiting the reconstruction of the OTF and continued to get through with wild success, each time with only four soldiers.

Eventually I did get six soldiers again and my play style was dramatically different, waiting on the aliens to screw up, more defensive than offensive. Cutting my squad down by a third taught me caution, if nothing else.

That's usually my how I approach things as well. Of course, going on the offensive can be preferable sometimes.

Okay I'm getting traction now. Just finished a Council Report after having done my first Assault the Alien base mission and following that up with a terror mission and all my countries are in the blue with work starting on the deepest level of the base.

I've got most of my people decked out with energy weapons and better gear and they are tearing their way through a lot of the enemies.

How long would you guys say is an average game?

An average game? An hour lol.

To win a game I'd say around 15-20 hours on normal, but the time varies a lot depending on how much you want to prepare and how long it takes you to complete missions. For example, in the first game I won I didn't attack the alien base until 245 days passed. I used all that time to launch satellites, build my base, level up a badass squad and do research. The game came to an end pretty quick once I chose to progress the story since I had top tier gear, a main squad and a back-up squad fully trained and that playthrough took me a little under 20 hours.

Just when I thought I had it all under control these damned giant ED-209 mech things show up and send my team scrambling for cover.

Like most of the enemies in X-Com, the mechs are scary at first but once you kill a couple they lose that air of terror. A good sniper can take down a full health Mech in a single turn if the fates happen to be smiling on you.

You really like making people feel stupid huh? The game is hard, and every game is different. Stop coming across like your the best ever.

I'm not sure what your problem is with James, but from what he stated he wasn't trying to make anyone feel stupid with that statment there . I've seen people say certain things on here and you can tell who is actually being a jerk and who's not with the tone they use and how they word it to some one here. Calm down, please. He was just saying it gets easier as you keep playing.

I don't have a problem with James at all. The last 3 posts I've read of his have been just like kinda like "I didn't have a problem with em so it's not hard" sorry I didn't mean to get anyone riled up. I just get frustrated trying to beat this game on classic/ironman.

Sorry James

I just get sick of having my majors get shredded by new things.

Also a sniper with disabling shot is amazing when you're going up against them. I regretted giving both of my snipers battle scanners during the final mission.

The end is in sight! I just tagged the UFO with the hyperwave beam. Peeked over at a list of main missions so I know I'm nearing the end on that.

Have got pretty much an entire team of Colonels and Majors, my KIA list is pretty long though but that's because I didn't reload while on missions.
