Yorgos Lanthimos: ‘POOR THINGS’

What a fascinating, often hellish journey of discovery this turned out to be. A lot of Poor Things can be told through facial expressions and actions instead of just words, and coupled with how a lot of the early scenes are directed, it almost felt like watching a silent movie. I know that doesn't make a ton of sense, but I really enjoyed this film. All of the leads were great, Stone especially as she learns from various characters how the world works, how she'll make her place in it, and what she can and ultimately can't control.

Bella truly does go on quite the arc, and this film does not pull its punches on how exactly Bella learns about certain things. I certainly will not look at an apple the way after this movie. If you know, you know. But yes, great film. Contender for one of my top 10 of the year for sure.

The only weak part for me was Jarrod Carmichael. Everyone was doing these great accents and he shows up and just uses his regular voice.

Going from Rebel Moon on Friday to Poor Things on Saturday is such a whiplash in actual visual quality.

I loved this.

She was phenomenal in this. Easily the best performance of the year. She most definitely deserves the Oscar.

Man, I'm so proud of Emma! Seeing my favorite actress win her second Oscar is so surreal. She's in a league of her own now among her peers.

Watching it without knowing a damn thing about it as we speak only to find out Stone just won an Oscar for it is surreal.

Well, this was wonderfully engaging and thought-provoking.

Of course, I knew the film had earned many awards and strong notices from mainstream reviewers. But as I watched Poor Things, I recognized its themes could be divisive among certain “serious critics.” Was it feminist or “faux feminist”/misogynist? And sure enough, I found some interesting analyses that argued one side or the other.

Thought-provoking indeed. And Emma Stone was extraordinary.
