Sci-Fi Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon | Netflix

I'm intrigued.

Piss yellow, brown and gray visuals? Check.

Pretentious “deep” imagery and dialogue? Check, check.

Overused and unnecessary slow-mo to just look cool and needlessly draw out the runtime? Check, check, check.

Unnuanced character “acting“ jumping from stoic all the way to yelling? Check, check, check, check.

Yep, it’s a Zack Snyder film.

What blows me away is he gets huge budgets to make the ugliest movies. This is coming out this year:

Interesting to see how much Nolan has closed the gap between them visually. But Snyder has just widened the gulf between them on literally everything else.

I'm confused by this statement. Is the idea that Snyder is better visually then Nolan? Like Christopher Nolan?

I don’t know. I thought it looked cool, like a video game but in a good way mostly. But Snyder and his team have made plenty of intriguing trailers (hell, he managed to make me think Sucker Punch was going to be good). We’ll see how the movie turns out.

The impression I get from Zack Snyder is: he conceptualizes all these cool-looking scenes separately, shoots them and then puts them together to make something that he can technically call a movie, even if the whole movie doesn't fit together perfectly.

For some reason I feel like this is what we're getting with Rebel Moon.

Looks like Sci-fi channels Dune mini series threw up on Star Wars (and Battle Beyond the Stars) with a massive fx budget, and gave us this.

Hey, I object to this. The original Dune miniseries had a fun stage play thing going on. Much interesting than anything Snyder thinks up.

Damn, I actually thought I would be a lot more excited for this considering Snyder usually puts out some banger trailers but outside of the great visuals it really does look like 10 other sci-fi flicks blended together.

Now, I'll obviously still check it out when it drops but, in a year, where we are getting films like The Creator and Dune: Part II I just can't say that I am hyped for this the same way I am for those movies.

I do love the cast though and I'm honestly wishing all the best for Synder after how divisive his previous films have been, but my expectations aren't all that high, especially with it going straight to Netflix.

Hopefully, Sofia Boutella at least comes out of this unscathed.

I'll still be watching it when it drops. At the VERY LEAST I will say that it looks more like an actual movie than most of what Netflix churns out like Red Notice and Heart of Stone.

Whenever I wonder why Zack Snyder’s films look and feel the way they do, I think back to that quote of him talking about how he grew up reading and loving “Heavy Metal” magazine as a kid for the blood, sex and aesthetic, and everything comes back into focus.

All of his filmography is just “Heavy Metal” movies in all but name, and just as gratuitous and shallow.
