Deadpool 2 is also getting a China release where the first one did not, so it's guaranteed to do pretty huge overseas.

For an R-rated comic book franchise, maybe you wanted more due to the success of the first film, but these are still pretty amazing numbers.

Let me put something in perspective for everyone. Deadpool 2 just had a bigger opening weekend than the last three Spider-Man movies, including Homecoming.

It's also bigger than the opening for Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 ... which, by the way, opened and closed lower than the original, and I challenge anyone to call that movie a box office disappointment.

P.S.: It seems like Deadpool 2 is NOT getting a China release.

Would have been very interesting to have seen how it would have done there.

Yes technically, but those movies came out 14 and 16 years ago when tickets cost a lot less. Adjusted for inflation and all that. I think the last three Spider-Man movies are more valid comparisons. Amazing Spider-Man in 2012 I think opened with like $62 million. So I mean, even going by inflation standards, Deadpool 2 still far surpassed it.

I did some googling and it seems this is all based on a tweet from Gavin Feng and a Reddit post that it's "sort of confirmed" it won't. IMHO, it's not enough evidence to convince me that it's not.

I think Reynolds' joke pretty much confirms that Deadpool 2 won't be released in China anytime soon.

I mean was that line directed at China and UK or both? So it's not getting released in the UK either?

Yeah, of course. You can't compare them directly. But what you can compare is the minor minor bump between Spider-man and Spider-man 2, so I wouldn't cry foul just because it opened somewhat lower than the original.

 He said that it's rated 15 in the UK and "Go **** yourself" in China.

Yeah understood.

But I mean I think you can spin these numbers as being underwhelming. But in my opinion, considering Deadpool as a franchise has all these factors going against it, what Deadpool has done is pretty outstanding, including with Deadpool 2. There's always a bit of a stigma with doing a sequel anyway.

The movie got good reviews, it's definitely going to break even. So they are sitting pretty comfortably right now. They didn't Transformers it up.

Deadpool 2 could be like Kingsman: The Golden Circle where it drops from the first film domestically but makes up the shortfall OS so the WW total isn't far off the first film

Well, it already made a profit so a sequel is already justified if they decide to do so.

Yup, and with the X-Force movie they have already found a way to keep the franchise fresh and interesting for the audience.

In other words, it hasn't been released in China yet but it will. So not seeing the problem there.

Maybe 'at the time of writing this post' part confused you but DP2 didn't get approval from SARFT. It's not releasing in China. It's the final verdict.

Yeah I didn't see that anywhere. Is that official? This is all I could find at Deadline:

One key market where Deadpool did not open this session (and where it would appear unlikely to be granted a release) is China.

For some reason Sony opened Spider-man 2 on a Wednesday and not on a Friday so it had burned off some of its demand which made the opening weekend lower. I think if SM2 had opened traditionally on a Friday it would have beaten the opening of the first movie.

SARFT is the governing body that regulates exhibition of all movies in China. DP2 didn't get their approval so it won't release over there.

I don't think this needs an official confirmation. I mean why would the regulating bodies in China bother confirming DP2's status if it's not releasing there altogether?? Did you see any official confirmation that 'IT' wasn't going to release there?? We would have had concrete info on release dates and certifications if DP2 were to get a release in the middle kingdom. Since we don't have any info, it's not happening. So there is no point in speculating about it.

For any film to do 300 mil ww in its first weekend off a 110 mil budget is frankly amazing.

Don't see how anyone could be dissapointed with these numbers. Its not far off half what the last one made.

It will have good legs like the last one as well.
Popular with the older crowd who don't generally rush out first weekend to watch films.

I hope we get both a Deadpool 3 and an X-Force film.

The first film getting banned in China was a major news story, and yet there seems to be very little coverage a all about this one and it's lack of a China release. I did find news about Deadpool being shown at a film festival in Beijing though.

What is china's issue with deadpool?

Yes its quite crude but tbh its not that bad.

Gotta love this poll lol... "Will it outgross DP?".

A: "Yes..."
B: "Yes..."
C: "Yes..."

I guess with it being more of the same and not toned down there wouldn't have been that high an expectation that the decision would be different this time.
