Well, he is wearing a red costume.

I am surprised because earlier estimates looked like it was going to open higher based off of Friday.

But then again, I think it's an inferior movie to the original. My general opinion is that Deadpool 2 is good, but not as good as the original. Like maybe some of the gags and jokes are better in this one, but the story is tighter and more focused in the first.

I think part of the reason is that Deadpool was so low on its budget they had to get really creative and it really drove them to make something different and inventive.

This movie, Deadpool was already huge, so they were able to get double the money. I'm not saying that made them lazy, but sometimes restrictions can breed excellence and creativity.

I agree that the first one was better, but not massively so. There was definitely less lulls in the film with regard to jokes in the first one. With this one they had a couple(at least!) of whole 5-minute(or close to it) sections without any jokes(or ones that landed) unlike the first movie where not a single minute went by it seemed without at least a chuckle. That'll show up in less box office $.

For any film to do 300 mil ww in its first weekend off a 110 mil budget is frankly amazing.

Don't see how anyone could be disappointed with these numbers. It's not far off half what the last one made.

It will have good legs like the last one as well.
Popular with the older crowd who don't generally rush out first weekend to watch films.

Disappointment comes from expectations, not whether it's a financial success(which of course it is). I don't hear anyone saying it's not a success $-wise or critic-wise. But given how well received the first one was? Yeah, it's a bit of a shock...hence the disappointment. I expected $135M minimum based on all the variables going into it. There's no good reason it shouldn't have got there IMHO.

There were quite a few people who went out to see the first Deadpool on its opening weekend due to all the hype and curiousity and left not so impressed.

With Deadpool I feel you really get him or you don't. So it retained a fair share of its last audience but didn't really grow it.

The fact this film cost only $100m means that even a smaller opening than previous is not going to seriously damage its ability to make a substantial profit. Even if it makes roughly the same amount globally as the last film that still a very good return on investment. And that's the beauty of smaller budgets. Solo is probably going to have to equal Deadpool's world wide total just to break even.

It's going to make a lot of money, yeah.

In essence, they have something that costs less than most blockbusters or superhero movies, but still performs like one of those movies.

That's fantastic. Even if Deadpool ends up occupying a niche that doesn't grow much beyond its initial success, that's not a terrible thing. It fits the character.

who are these people, most people who saw the first deadpool thought it was hilarious, hence why it did so well.

A good OW....but i can't see how this movie can even get to $800M without china...

Ah well..... hope DP3 goes back to a Feb or Aug opening.

I can imagine a fair number of people finding the humour too crude, but then that is also a big part of the reason why so many others loved it so much. It's definitely not trying to please everybody.

Which is what elevates the movie IMO. It doesn't pander to its audience. It is what it is. Ready to be discovered.

Yes, exactly. It sticks to its guns totally. Of course when you do that some people will be turned off but the ones who love it will love it even more.

What is china's issue with deadpool?

Yes its quite crude but tbh its not that bad.

Extreme violence and sexuality. And for the record, Deadpool 2 thumbs their noses more at China because they included two openly gay characters. No other superhero movie does that (remember the controversy around Thor: Ragnarok cutting even the implication of Valkyrie being bi out?), because China bans movies with overt themes of homosexuality.

I think Deadpool 2 being the first superhero movie to include that is just one more bird flip to Chinese censors.

Oh right. Sounds like China is going to be off the cards for good. May as well not bother trying to be acceptable to that standard then and go all out.

Lol.. its a great opening weekend. Just because its a bit lower than DP1 does not make any of this disappointing. In a way, RR is just copying the Avengers, I think. This is his AoU. The next movie will be a proper IW for DP. :p

I think the only thing holding it back at the Box Office is the release date. It was massively stupid of Fox to release it here, surrounded by huge competition. Hopefully they learn their lesson for X-Force.

The release date in general is moronic. We've seen what August can do for these films. Maybe it doesn't make a difference opening weekend, but I'm certain it could squeeze more profit there.

Thats the issue..... Things worked out so well for them when they released it in feb 2016 and Fox decided to do things differently.

X-men Apocalypse released in end of may 2016 and grossed less than x-men 1 did domestically (Cap : Civil War was released 3 weeks earlier)...... Similar situation to now.....

I am not saying DP2 is a bad movie (XA was). It is still a great flick (though not as good as the 1st one). It would have grossed so much more if it was released in aug like "IT" was. Afterall this is a R rated pic. So why release it at the beginning of summer ? Its a ******** move.

Fox got greedy (they wanted the big blockbuster summer release) and it looks like they have to pay the price now. They will still make insane profit from this movie....but it could have been so much more.

Its not rocket science. IF DP1 was released in May or June 2016....it would not have grossed as much as it did domestically.

Fox got too greedy.....and are paying the price (No billion dollar superhero movie from their studio).

I'm glad all the studio executives here are disappointed in a movie not making more money and how packed months are nowadays with big blockbusters. You pick what you pick and reap those profits. I doubt the folks behind Deadpool 2 are sweating bullets about whether the film makes a billion dollars...

If they were greedy wouldn't they move it to a month which guarantees more profit? If anything they were careless and impatient. Rather then try to beat Solo to market a week early (as opposed to the initial release of a week after), they could have moved it later in the summer where it would've had much clearer sailing. Now Solo may not reach the levels we initially thought based on the early buzz (so DP2 will likely hold much better then people think), but it still will be impacted moving forward.

I used the word greedy because....in the summer, movies tend to be more frontloaded (ie.....the studios get more of the cut for the first few weeks). So it is pure profit for fox now.

The thing is ...if studios are more patient and if the legs of the movie is good (like DP1)...they will more likely make more in the long term.

Another reason for the greed is Fox might have wanted to have bragging rights for a big summer blockbuster release.

Anyway...i am done explaining this. I would like movies (especially superhero ones) to be spread all over the year so that i can see a new SH movie every month or so. When they put all their blockbusters (superheros and non-superheros) together ...i am gonna skip some movies.

I have already given my hard earned money 3 times for IW and twice for this movie. I won't be contributing for solo :woot:

If JW2 isn't good....i won't be seeing that too (unless my kid wants to go).

I have a bad feeling Yukio gets cut if Disney starts releasing Deadpool sequels in the future though.

You do realize that this stuff is not about "bragging rights", etc.?

As a major studio, you just need to have at least one big summer tentpole. That's what the market demands. And with Deadpool making such huge splash at the box office in 2016, OF COURSE they would pick Deadpool 2 as their big summer blockbuster for this year.

Studios HAVE to be competitive, and Fox has bet everything on Deadpool this year. Can you blame them?

If they try to release Deadpool with a PG 13 rating most of the best stuff would have to go and it would be pointless really. He could feature in other people's films and be slightly toned down and I think that would work but in his own film it has to be balls to the wall or bust. I thought there was talk of creating a separate label to release Deadpool under so it was clear to parents that this was not your typical Marvel film for parents to take their kids to. If not I think they'd be better off getting someone else to do Deadpool and have him outside of the MCU even if he still makes jokes about them all the time. I'd miss X-Force outside the MCU though if that happened.

I mean who knows. They might release an R-rated version of Deadpool (although I am not nearly as confident as some fans). I just mean they'd tone down sexual jokes, and remove openly gay characters, because they'd want it to play in China. They could still make an R-rated Deadpool movie that played just soft enough to get a Chinese release.

At the end of the day, Disney doesn't leave money on the table.
