The first one played the Valentines day angle really well selling itself as a "romantic comedy" which perhaps worked a few extra $$$ to that total added with the fact the first had the surprise and originality factor a sequel cant ever have.

They've also broken that tradition as people were getting used to Star Wars and Xmas together.

Yep, me included. I always found it a bit strange they were going for a summer release with Solo.

When its all set and done......DP2 is gonna gross more than logan with > 80% RT rating.

I would say thats a pretty good sequel.

DP3 ( has to be released in less crowded months) will gross at least $750M. And if they can get china on board.....expect $850M.

Movie studio who pay their incompetant execs millions of dollars have to realise that movie biz is a zero sum game. You can't schedule so many many in a tiny window period and expect all of them to make money.

If DP2 was release in 1st week of april.... BP would not have made almost $700M domestic no matter how good it is was (and how highly it was rated).

BP became a WW phenomenon which is the reason why it grossed over 1 billion; even if DP2 had directly compete against it I doubt it would have been able to anything more than a minor speed bump.

I think while DP2's BO might be disappointing to the execs at Fox, I doubt it will affect their plans for X-Force or DP3. And if Disney's purchase of Fox goes through in 2019, who knows what will happen to this franchise?

BP would have grossed over $1B regardless of when it opened. I am just saying....if it had DP as a competition in the month of Apr, their domestic would be around $650M instead of almost $700M they have now (ie...DP2 would have benefited with dozen of million more). Its a zero sum game.

There was no other movie worthy....so people kept going back to see BP.

Iger said he’ll keep DP as an R-rated series but that could easily be grandstanding. Disney also gets money from merchandising and so far, the Deadpool movies haven’t released much merch. Not even an action figure based on the movie suit, discounting Hot Toys. They will either keep it R but relegate it to Hulu as they’ll have 60% of it if this goes through or they’ll go back on their word and make X-Force/DP3 PG-13.

This is false.

Updated OS and total from mojo:

Domestic: $219,707,352 44.0%
+ Foreign: $279,738,196 56.0%
= Worldwide: $499,445,548

Sooooooo close!

Someone tell me why $300 million is impossible now?

I definitely think it's possible at the foreign box office, but it's also far less likely (NOT impossible) that it won't reach $300 million domestically.

IMO, I think that the R rating has hurt DP2 because (a) the whole novelty of having an R rated DP movie is no longer new and has worn off Like Daffy Duck said, it's an act that you can only do once) and (b) because there are reports that LESS kids are being brought to this film by their parents or are being let in to seeing it by theater managers like the first one.

I'm surprised that this movie didn't hold better, because it felt like the buzz around it was very good.

It's hard to get traction, I guess. Or maybe the first one simply over-performed by a lot.

The movie is still going to make plenty of money, so that's not really a problem. But it's a little hard for me to imagine a future Deadpool movie being received better than this one.

Disney doesn't put out any Deadpool movie merch for the same reason they don't put out X-Men movie merch. Instead they opt to put out comic based merch because they don't have to split any of the profits with Fox. Theres been a **** ton of DP merch since the movies though, and the general public doesn't seem to notice or care, as it sells.

Two reasons: Infinity War and Solo. Sadly, these three films are all hurting each other. If they had been spaced out better, they would all have more in the banks.

I think it might be even bigger than that. Call it “genre wallet fatigue.” It’s been roughly 14 weeks since the release of Black Panther, and counting BP to Deadpool we’ve had 9 big sf/fantasy/superhero films. BP and IW alone have done $1.3 billion domestically and $3.25 billion WW. Toss in RPO, DP2, Maze Runner, Pacific Rim, Tomb Raider, Rampage and Wrinkle in Time and domestic sales soar past $2 billion and the WW total goes to $5.7 billion. In a little more than 3 months. And that came on the heels of two big Xmas hits, TLJ and Jumanji, which did about $340 million of their combined $1 billion in domestic ticket sales in 2018. I can’t help but think people are feeling the pinch.

Maybe in that situation they want to take a break unless something really special comes along.

Exactly. I don’t have any worries about Incredibles 2 or JW 2 but I’m starting to wonder how AM&TW fares. Is that family of 4 that was in front of me in line at Solo yesterday and spent $30 on tix and another $27 at the snack bar willing to do that three more times in the next five weeks? If one of these goes into the “we’ll wait for the blue ray”files I know which one I’d bet on.

Yeah. No matter how many must see films come out a year these families will have a maximum capacity. If there is a new top film every week they will have to pick and choose regardless of quality. So the question becomes, which ones miss the cut. If you open during a wasteland month you have much more chance of people not missing you out altogether.

@boxoffice:

That's a good point. I guess it depends on what people's expectations are, but the ticket prices are making the summer much too congested. Eventually something gotta give here.

Man, it’d be great if Emily Blunt was cast as Outlaw, just for Deadpool to call her Yondu, at least once.

Don’t know if this counts as an Easter Egg but this was still fun to speculate:

Tuesday was $5,346,203 (-48%) per the-numbers.com. Given that both Solo and IW dropped more than 60%, that seems like a pretty decent hold. Domestic total now $223,883,884.

For those keeping score, that 223 just edges out Big Hero 6 to make DP2 the No. 3 superhero comedy ever, and pushed it above Ted to 11 on the all-time R-rated list.
