DC Animation ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’: Animated Series From Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves Greenlit

Maybe its just me, but with Timm, JJ Abrams and Matt Reeves attached, I expected more from this show?

The best episode I've seen was the Clayface episode, because it basically adapted the original origin story. But outside of that... meh?

I'm honestly ready for a new animated Batman series.

An honest question... has any Batman cartoon that came after BTAS ever surpassed it in anyway in terms of cultural influence or how certain characters are perceived?

Of course not. BTAS came out at the right time, in an environment where an animated comic show could get such a foothold. And it will always be first. My only concern is the quality of the shows.

It's interesting seeing how much bigger anime is now compared to those 90s shows. Demon Slayer is BTAS on venom.

Quality is subjective for the most part... but how many "great" Batman animated shows have we gotten since BTAS?

The main thing about BTAS is that it aimed much higher than a lot of the other cartoons on TV at the time. I don't get that sense from the other Batman cartoons that have come out since then, that they wanted to push what you can do with the format of televised animation.

With JJ Abrams and Matt Reeves involved, I would've expected Caped Crusader to push boundaries for what is possible with a Batman animated show, especially with the lack of restrictions compared to a "kids cartoon" like the other shows were. How can they do so little with so much more creative freedom?

Obviously Caped Crusader doesn't match the heights of BTAS and likely never will but frankly most of its episodes are about the average quality of BTAS at least. BTAS is one of my favourite shows ever but it's not even the best written DCAU show.

I mean, there is a third creative there that is likely more involved than those two. One who this thread gets very angry about when I suggest that he may not be an asset anymore...

See, I've got my issues with Timm too but most of what's good in the show stems from it being the most Bruce Timm show to ever Bruce Timm. The really cold take on Bruce, the dementedly horny Harley Quinn episode... great stuff.

JLU, completely without question.
That was gonna be my guess.

Yeah, I can agree with that. Definitely the most consistently well written. Very few actual stinkers during it’s entire run, and even those are still interesting in some way or really entertaining to watch. Great voice cast. Some of the most memorable scenes in the entire DCAU and infinitely re-quotable. I mean, just this alone:

As much as I love BTAS, it definitely goes through some growing pains, and there are some…less than stellar episodes, but I’m able to overlook them because it is the first show in the DCAU and they’re still figuring things out and trying to find it’s identity and voice.

Do you include JL with that as well or just Unlimited?

I feel like Cartoon Network was like done with JL after the CADMUS arc. I don't remember them promoting the show as heavily after that.

I don’t actually. JL is a blast but it has some really, really weak and bland runs of episodes. Almost none of which I actively dislike or don’t enjoy watching but it takes awhile to find itself.

Justice League kind of sucks once you've watched JLU. The arcs on JL killed the pacing and the small team wasn't nearly as fun or lively.

JLU is in the trinity of DC animated shows for me. Along with Teen Titans and Harley Quinn.

JLU also has one of my favourite portrayals of Superman outside of comics despite DCAU Superman not normally suffering from an over-abundance of personality. Love that he actually gets to be kind of difficult and stubborn and flawed, the stuff with Captain Marvel is great.

My bro's favorite episode. We make jokes about the mouth covering all the time. :hehe:
