10 games that should be films

For those who don't want to go through all the BS:

1. American McGee's Alice
2. Grand Theft Auto IV
3. Halo
4. God of War
5. Mass Effect
6. The Legend of Zelda
7. BioShock
8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
9. Batman: Arkham Asylum
10. Borderlands

Personally, I am OUTRAGED that Half-Life isn't on that list. It could seriously be the most epic sci-fi/horror movie EVER.

still waiting for my zelda movie

directed by Del Toro!!

zelda has lots of potential

Here the ones that to me could be movies, if handled right:

1. Metal Gear Solid (in fact the whole series could do it)

2. Resident Evil (despite what Hollywood claims, these games have not been adapted and the 2002 remake of the original game is already an almost perfect horror movie, just get some better dialogue and trim up the middle and you have something on par with Romero's best)

3. Red Dead Redemption (It's already an awesome story based on one of the most cinematic, American genres of all time. 'Nuff said)

4. BioShock (I may not agree with the politics, but it's a pretty brilliant game in its own right that would make for a great movie if the filmmakers can get viewers to suspend disbelief that they're in a retro underwater world)

5. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (It is such an epic story it may have to be cut up into two films, but it would be on par with LOTR or Harry Potter as an individual story, if handled correctly....though that's a big if)

Honestly, Halflife is probably my fav game of all time but the reason it works well like most of Valve games is because it was told in a interactive manner rather than specifically trying to be a movie. I don't think alot of the games listed there would make good movies.

Warcraft (which is apparently being turned into a movie) has a strong story and characters as well as a strong art direction, you could probably make multiple movies out of it because of the scope. Anyone who has played World of Warcraft and thinks it has no story should probably play Warcraft III. It's like a mix of epic scale Lord Of The Rings story-telling with a Anakin/Darth Vader like story that doesn't turn into the terrible prequel mess.

I think doing it as animated, it would end up alot better than a live action movie, Warcraft basically is a comic-book like cartoon.

I don't think Half-Life would have to be told in the exact way as the game (meaning, a first person camera angle for 2 hours), which I understand is not what you're suggesting... but even so, the basic core of the Half-Life story is very simple, and almost universal. It is my favorite game of all-time.

A man is trying to reach the surface.

That's really all it is, literally and figuratively. Gordon Freeman is an ordinary man who has to overcome extraordinary obstacles (to quote Christopher Reeve). He's a scientist who witnesses a rip in reality that spills the creatures from an alien dimension into our world, and now he has to survive the horror while trying to reach daylight. It's so simple, the movie writes itself.

Throw in some exotic creatures, a tiny sub-plot that delves into Gordon's character, military action, and a final climactic horror scene when Gordon goes into the alien dimension, and that is one kick ass movie.

Metal Gear Solid has the potential to be a Lord of the Rings style epic saga.

I was surprised not to see MGS on the list as I feel it has the most potential.

How did Red Dead Redemption miss this list? To me that is the most obvious. They don't even have to make many modifications to the storyline to make it work. Not only could it be good, but in the right hands it could potentially be an Oscar calibre film. And with the success of True Grit, I definitely think there is an opportunity for a western genre revival, kind of like in the early 90s when we had stuff like Dances with Wolves, Unforgiven, Tombstone, etc., coming out.

Red Dead Redemption is actually just The Wild Bunch without the bunch.

I think there are hardly games with good stories. And yes, I've played a lot. Heavily expanded games like System Shock or Deus Ex might be turned into decent movies, but there are probably lots of books that provide way more creative stories and all. Games are games and gameplay comes first (at least it was that way, until 8 years ago). In the end it's all about the brand name.

The games that should be made into films need to have an easily understood and adapted storyline that is unique (more or less) to that game. The Legend of Zelda works, but it's unwise to expect Ocarina of Time. As such, games like Final Fantasy 7 shouldn't be made into a movie.

Furthermore, we've already had many Batman movies, so Arkham Asylum is unneccessary, and with the dozens of crime dramas, westerns and war movies we already have, there is nothing special about GTA, Red Dead Redemption or the Call of Duty series, and they're not necessary to make movies for.

Resident Evil is a tricky one. Yes, they were made into movies, and honestly, the way they were done is really the only way to do it where the movies will stand out, otherwise, what will separate Resident Evil from Dawn of the Dead or the countless other zombie movies out there?

Rocketman has the right idea. Find a game that has a good concept and make a movie based on it. Don't expect a direct adaption, especially on games in extensive series.

Oddworld - Abe's Odyssey (done in Avatar style!)

I heard the Metal Gear Solid movie ended up getting canned. I'd still like to see it, though. It'd be fantastic, if done right.

Surprised nobody's mentioned Uncharted.

Red Dead Redemption would make for an awesome movie. I'd like to see Infamous as well.

Not really. The amount of changes that would be needed to fix the absurdity of the tale would leave it close to unrecognizable.

A problem with most of this list and games in general is that they have completely ripped their stories off far superior books and films and turned them generic. What is the point of a Red Dead or Grand Theft Auto film? We have already seen them and done far better.

I think that's a really good one. Althought the game is cartoony, it always reminds me of the Jews and Josef Mengele (Dr Death) during world war 2. The mudokon are seem as a resource to be used than living beings. I also liked the fact you fought them with brain-power rather then pointing a crosshair and shooting there heads off.

you know damn well if this gets made you know who will be cast it is just too easy

Yeah. I heard Kojima was not satisfied with the budget so he said no. I don't think a movie adaptation is not necessary because the series is already one.

I just want the series not to be ruined because Kojima made a satisfying conclusion.

I think a good Resident evil movie would take inspiration from movies like Halloween, Psycho, Terminator 1. Ironically, Re1 to code veronica are hommage to these movies.

I agree. I think very few games would actually make good movies. And yea, alot of them basically are trying to emulate movies in the first place.
Honestly, Metal Gear Solid is more on the level with the wrestling soap opera than a well written and acted movie.

In no particular order:

Pac-Man
Deus Ex
Red Dead Redemption
Qbert
Rainbow Six
Splinter Cell
Halo
Raving Rabbids
Metal Gear Solid
L.A. Noire
Goldeneye (....oh wait....)
Call of Duty (a WWII edition)
Need for Speed
God of War
Myst
Pitfall!

Minecraft, anyone? It'd probably be the same "stuck on island" thing, but there's only so much you can make out of exploding green monsters, zombies, giant spiders, and a purple portal to an underworld.

My personal wishlist...

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Diablo (Blizzard series)
Dragon Warrior (also known as Dragon Quest)
GTA: Vice City
Castlevania (as long as Paul W.S. Anderson STAYS THE F**K AWAY)
Shadowrun

Oh, and since they're now making board game movies, HeroQuest and The Omega Virus.

Legend Of Zelda definitely needs a movie.

Resident Evil needs movies that are true to the games (no Alice ****).

Castlevania would also make an interesting horror movie.

I'd personally love a movie about the first Phantasmagoria game and a movie about Gabriel Knight. I loved those games back in the days.

zelda is the movie i want but that game is gonna needs lots of changes for the big screen

seeing how link does'nt speak so he really has no personality

the film makers go to figure out what personality to give him

also we cant have link going to dungeons opening chests can we lol the story needs to be altered for the big screen
