Ok, sorry BloodyWolverine, but I made this thread because I didn't want it to be limited by a poll. Well, this is essentially a best movie of 2006 thread. Also, every single movie of 2006 has been released (in the US, at least). There were so many other threads, so I wanted to make the undisputed best of 2006 thread.

I guess we can follow this formula, because there were some great movies this year and many people can't just list one movie. Just make a Top 10 list with the best movie of 2006 on the top and bolded. Follow my formula.

1: the queen
2: the departed
3: V for vendetta
4. the proposition
5: Munich
6: good night and good luck
7: casino royale
8: Melquiades Strada
9: Babel
10:cars

I'll have to come back,I always forget something.

Top 10:

- Casino Royale.
- Inside Man.
- The Prestige.
- Jet Li's Fearless.
- The Pursuit of Happyness.
- Déjà Vu.
- Rocky Balboa.
- Happy Feet.
- Apocalypto.
- Mission: Impossible III.

There are so many movies I could say should be up for best movie of the year. I think the best 3 movies of the year were The Departed, The Fountain, and The Prestige.

I haven't seen The Departed.

I have to wait for the DVD. :csad:

1. The Departed
2. Children of Men
3. Casino Royale
4. V for Vendetta
5. Revolver
6. The Proposition
7. Munich
8. The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
9. The World’s Fastest Indian
10. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

I've noticed that many people on this board are confusing MUNICH for a 2006 film - it was a 2005 film. Anyway, my top picks for 2006:

1. UNITED 93 - Not enough people saw this, but this is without a doubt a masterpiece and by far the best film to be released this year.

2. PAN'S LABYRINTH - An amazing film. A wonderful fairy tale for an adult audience and an absolute must-see.

3. CASINO ROYALE - It's not often popular entertainment is as good as this film is, but this Bond film breathed life into a franchise that's been ailing since 1971.

4. THANK YOU FOR SMOKING - The best comedy of the past decade. In a time when comedy is usually stupid or gross, this film dared to be intelligent.

5. THE DEPARTED - This film is pretty overrated, in my opinion. It's a good piece of entertainment, but hardly a revolutionary piece of filmmaking.

6. DREAMGIRLS - One of the best musicals to ever hit the screen. Engaging performances, great music - what more could youa sk for?

7. THE MATADOR - A little-seen film, but it's really a great one. Fantastic performances from Brosnan and Kinnear.

8. V FOR VENDETTA - Okay, so it's Alan Moore's vision taken and turned from a brilliant piece of science fiction into a popcorn film. But it's still remarkably entertaining.

9. SUPERMAN RETURNS - This film is certainly flawed (but that's an issue with every superhero film to date). However, it's also one of the most beautiful and cinematic superhero ventures of all time.

10. APOCALYPTO - Say what you will about Mel Gibson, but he knows how to direct a great film. This action film set within the Mayan culture is one of the most unique films to be released this year.

Turkey of the Year: THE DA VINCI CODE - The most pretentious and dull movie that could have been produced. I don't know the last time I've ever been so bored in a movie theatre. Not only does it base its ludicrous story on absolutely faulty history, it attempts on taking itself so seriously that it saps the fun out of everything it does. It's like watching NATIONAL TREASURE, but with none of the entertainment value.

1) The Departed
2) Casino Royale

I didn't see a lot of movies this year. These two stuck out among the few.

The Bond film that breathed life into Bond was TLD and after it GE. To diminish both films' importance, especially the latter's, seems only to a be pro-CR attitude, one too many.

Otherwise, it IS one of the year's best films. But other years featuring Bond films would've made their own perspective lists, I am sure (TOTAFILM had GE as 1995's best film, if I remember correctly).

It was released in 2006 here.

At the time, TLD was pretty shocking, but it wasn't the film that CASINO ROYALE was. It's a good Bond film and stood in stark contrast to the Moore era, but even so, something felt tired about the whole deal. Had they wanted Dalton to work, I almost feel that they had to take Dalton in a bolder direction.

And GOLDENEYE, while a very important moment for the Bond franchise, was primarily riding on nostalgia for the earlier Bond films. It was the return of James Bond, not a new start. Even with all of its attempts to prove that Bond was beyond the Cold War, something did feel rather old about the whole deal, and Bond still felt like a Cold War relic that had been given a new coat of paint, but was still rusting underneath.

GOLDENEYE's not even as "life-breathing" as THE SPY WHO LOVED ME WAS in 1977, and even there the curse of formula was beginning to choke the franchise (actually, formula had been choking the franchise ever since ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE didn't pan out).

CASINO ROYALE has made Bond feel fresh again, in a way he hasn't since the Connery era. No longer does Bond feel like a product of the 60s - he feels like a product of his own era, and he feels like he belongs. And not only that, but CASINO ROYALE has enjoyed a critical response the likes of which Bond hasn't seen for decades (not even THE SPY WHO LOVED ME or GOLDENEYE received such an overwhelmingly positive response). In short, CASINO ROYALE made the Bond franchise respectable by injecting the franchise with some genuine artistic credibility. That's an impressive achievement.

I know, but my thread isn't limited to a poll and asks for a Top 10 instead of just one.

Bump.

Have this and the other thread merged. :csad:

i am soooo jealous you saw that!:cmad:
and i voted Little Miss Sunshine but V is up there as well of course.

V for Vendetta - Great film. Hugo Weaver is amazing, able to pull a gripping performance despite wearing a mask. Natalie Portman as Evey was great.

Superman Returns - Flawed as it is, I love it. I love the subtly of it and a lot of the character focus. It has my favorite superhero film sequence ever and a number of classic moments.

Miami Vice - Nowhere nearly as good as I thought it would be, but there's plenty of great visuals and some nice headshots.

The Protector - A great action film and my introduction to Tony Jaa and Thai. Great bone-breaking and hard-hitting action sequences.

Fearless - Jet-Li's final martial arts epic, a great farewell. Behind the action is a solid captivating story, and it proved to me that Jet-Li is a good actor and can do more than throw kicks.

The Departed - Would've been the best film of the year if not for the final one on the list. Not a single bad performance and I can't find a flaw with the film. A perfect ten. I hope DiCaprio gets an Oscar for his work in this, and I hope Scorese gets the Oscar he's been denied all these years.

The Prestige - What sold me on this film initially was the prospect of seeing Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale going one on one against each other. It didn't disappoint in the least, with the story filled with numerous twists that left your head spinning. Best Christopher Nolan film I've ever seen, and maybe even Bale's.

Casino Royale - Bond back to basics, minus Q and Moneypenny. A great reboot/prequel and I can't wait to see more. Daniel Craig is excellent as Bond, though I think the show stealer is Judi Dench's M. She was so much more energetic in this entry than the last four. And Eva Green is the best Bond girl I've seen.

Pursuit of Happyness - Saw this yesterday. Will Smith's best performance and truly the feel good movie of the year with a great message.

The Fountain - My movie of the year. Critics hated it, average goers did as well, but who cares. The movie was the definition of "something you very different from what you've seen before", carrying you through three stories intertwined about a man's obsession for immortality. It's the first romantic movie I've ever loved. Rachel Weisz delivered in her supporting role, but the star is Hugh Jackman with his best performance ever. I've never seen an actor who can emote like him before. I hope he gets an Oscar nomination for his work. I hope Kronos Quartet wins best soundtrack.

And that's that.
