Let's just admit it...2006 was a horrible year for movies!

I hate to break it to everyone, but just because you've only seen 15 or 20 movies this year and half of them were crap like X3 or Grudge 2 that everyone knew would suck anyway doesn't mean it was a bad year for film. Quite the opposite.

In fact, since the 2000 or so, good movies have been on the rise, partly because more people are making movies. Low budget indies are being cranked out left and right, even low budget main stream pictures are popping up. Do there have to be 15 giant studio tentpoles released over 3 weeks like next year for you people to get excited? I guess so. Regardless, I would love for anyone to try and list two or three consecutive years from the 90s(or even better, the 80s) with as many excellent movies as we've gotten over the last two years.

Here's a quick list of films this year that were amazing:

Children of Men
A Prairie Home Companion
The Departed
Dreamgirls
The Fountain
A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints
The Prestige
A Scanner Darkly
The Proposition(Technically released last year, but no one in the US saw it)
The Descent(See above)
V for Vendetta
Happy Feet
Over The Hedge
Little Miss Sunshine
The Science of Sleep
United 93
Borat
Dave Chappelle's Block Party
Casino Royale
Thank You For Smoking
Inside Man
Apocalypto
Stranger Than Fiction
Talladega Nights
POTC: Dead Man's Chest
Mission: Impossible III
Letters Frokm Iwo Jima
Babel
Deja Vu
The Last King of Scotland
Blood Diamond

And that's just off the top of my head, and not taking into account movies that are just sheer fun to watch, like Crank, Jackass Two, Snakes on a Plane, or Slither.
Also, Pan's Labyrinth comes out this year and I'm willing to bet that'll belong on "best of" lists.
Superman Returns could even go on there, except I personally hated it and fell asleep through it, so I would never support it.

So don't give me "this year sucked" crap, when all these good movies have come out. I know it might be hard to drive an extra 20 minutes to get to a theater that might show one of the lesser known films as opposed to driving 5 minutes to your local theater so you can see Black Christmas, but if it's something you can't manage then don't complain about the quality of films this year when it's you who haven't seeked the good ones out.
For those of you who feel this year was lackluster, I'm sorry. For me, it just keeps getting better and better.

Superman Returns sucked and POTC 2 was nothing but 2 1/2 hours of action...good action doesn't make it a good movie.

regardless of what your opinion about those two movies are, they don't define the year in cinema

the summer doesn't really mean anything, because generally they are filled with movies that get mixed reviews, and have avid fan bases

you look at this year, there was a really strong solid march-april, which never happens cause that is when nothing gets released, but we had v for vendetta, Lucky Number Slevin, Proposition, hills have eyes, silent hill, inside man, 16 blocks was okay...that was the march april lineup

then the september through october wasn't bad ether, and that is another time frame where some dreadful movies get released, Prestige, Illusionist, Invincable, Little Miss Sunshine, Departed

and than I think once November and December came, it has been week after week of strong releases, Deja Vu, CR, Fountian, Blood Diamond, Good Shepard, Pursuit of Happiness etc

some may think this year missed the can't miss movie of year....and those are the people who didn't like Pirates DMC, because that was for most people, and just in general the can't miss movie of the year

besides that I think it was quite a good year for movies, could it have been better? 2007 looks like it will kick its ass, but as of right now, it is just as good, as the last couple of years if not better

The 90's?

Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, Resevoir Dogs, Leon, Usual Suspects, Heat, Casino, T2: Judgment Day Hey the list goes on.
Depends what year you're talking about. Sure, those are good flicks, but its not like they all came out in the same year. The quantity of good films per year has substantially risen since the 90s, largely due to the mainstream incorporation of independent film.

2006 was alright, but 2007 will be historic.

For me, the best were:

Superman Returns
The Departed
Fearless
The Prestige
Casino Royale
The Fountain
Inside Man
Apocalypto
Ong-Bak
V for Vendetta

And I haven't seen Good Shepherd, Blood Diamond, Rocky Balboa, Pursuit of Happyness yet.

2007 does seem like it has one hell of a line-up. Hopefully the "blockbuster" films of 2007 won't flounder. I can easily imagine many of them being big disappointments (POTC:AWE and SPIDER-MAN 3 both seem like they have the potential to be less than stellar).

Do you mean The Protector?

I think that they will be the biggest hits.
While I will see and enjoy them, I am afraid that Ocean's 13, FF2, and Transformers will be disappointments with the huge competition. Either they will be disappointments or movies won't be making colossal money next year.

We also have that piece of s***, stupid, motherf***ing trash, waste of money, kiddied down, terrible, not worth 2 cents, not funny, bulls*** Shrek 3 coming out, as well. :down :down   :ghost: :ghost:

Casablanca doesn't have any flaws nor does Citizen Kane or Gone With The Wind.
Casablanca is flawed. For instance, the entire movie hinges on an improbability. There is no way that "letters of transit" are going to make the Nazi's who are in control of the city turn their backs and allow a leader of the underground to leave. But that's the Mcguffin. But it doesn't change the fact that it is a brilliant movie and one of my favoite. I'm sure if you check IMDB there will be dozens of goofs.

2006 was great, I don't see 2007 living up to it based on the line up.

The Descent
Apocalypto
SAW III
The Hills Have Eyes
V for Vendetta
Hard Candy
Silent Hill
Jet Li's Fearless
TCM: The Beginning
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Peaceful Warrior
Rocky Balboa

All of those, amongst others were very good or great, leaning toward the latter.

What about Snakes on a Plane? How can the most internet hyped movie of all time not make this year worthy:confused:

um... no it wasn't. not even close. did you even see it? there was hardly any action at all until the last 20 minutes or so. if anything it was 2 and a half hours of sailing and talking and making bad jokes about rum.

but, back on the subject, 2006 was not a bad year for movies, comparitively... it had some great movies, some really good ones, some average ones, some dissapointments, and some pretty crappy ones... just like every other year since cinema was born!

um... because the movie itself was nothing special?

In terms of big budget movies, I feel 2006 was such a let down. :down

Sometimes you gotta look beyond the blockbusters my friend

Mmmm...Slither was so good.
F*** the "American movie-going public". :down

Slither was fantastic

up there with Return of the Living Dead 1 and 2, and Evil Dead 2 as the best Horror comedies

That's why I specified the "blockbusters". I enjoyed V for Vendetta, Prestige, even Borat was hysterical and I'm sure I would have enjoyed Departed.

But like I said in terms of blockbuster movies, this year I was severely disappointed (ie. Superman Returns, X3). I didn't even bother to see MI3 or Cars either.

And I am not dissagreeing with you, I thought the tentpoles kind of sucked this year, but I thought everything else was fantastic

Ever since Reurn Of The King was released, every year has been "the worst year for movies" according to you guys. :whatever:

I enjoyed 2004 with Shrek 2, Spiderman 2, Incredibles, Harry Potter and Bourne.

I enjoyed 2005 with Sith, Batman Begins, Harry Potter, and Kong.
