I hate to break it to everyone, but just because you've only seen 15 or 20 movies this year and half of them were crap like X3 or Grudge 2 that everyone knew would suck anyway doesn't mean it was a bad year for film. Quite the opposite.
In fact, since the 2000 or so, good movies have been on the rise, partly because more people are making movies. Low budget indies are being cranked out left and right, even low budget main stream pictures are popping up. Do there have to be 15 giant studio tentpoles released over 3 weeks like next year for you people to get excited? I guess so. Regardless, I would love for anyone to try and list two or three consecutive years from the 90s(or even better, the 80s) with as many excellent movies as we've gotten over the last two years.
Here's a quick list of films this year that were amazing:
Children of Men
A Prairie Home Companion
The Departed
Dreamgirls
The Fountain
A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints
The Prestige
A Scanner Darkly
The Proposition(Technically released last year, but no one in the US saw it)
The Descent(See above)
V for Vendetta
Happy Feet
Over The Hedge
Little Miss Sunshine
The Science of Sleep
United 93
Borat
Dave Chappelle's Block Party
Casino Royale
Thank You For Smoking
Inside Man
Apocalypto
Stranger Than Fiction
Talladega Nights
POTC: Dead Man's Chest
Mission: Impossible III
Letters Frokm Iwo Jima
Babel
Deja Vu
The Last King of Scotland
Blood Diamond
And that's just off the top of my head, and not taking into account movies that are just sheer fun to watch, like Crank, Jackass Two, Snakes on a Plane, or Slither.
Also, Pan's Labyrinth comes out this year and I'm willing to bet that'll belong on "best of" lists.
Superman Returns could even go on there, except I personally hated it and fell asleep through it, so I would never support it.
So don't give me "this year sucked" crap, when all these good movies have come out. I know it might be hard to drive an extra 20 minutes to get to a theater that might show one of the lesser known films as opposed to driving 5 minutes to your local theater so you can see Black Christmas, but if it's something you can't manage then don't complain about the quality of films this year when it's you who haven't seeked the good ones out.
For those of you who feel this year was lackluster, I'm sorry. For me, it just keeps getting better and better.
