2006 was a horrible year for american movies. Best movie of the year goes to The Departed. Here's my top 10 and it was a struggle to put together.

1. The Departed
2. Flags Of Our Fathers
3. The Queen
4. Little Miss Sunshine
5. Rocky Balboa
6. Thank You For Smoking
7. Blood Diamond
8. V for Vendetta
9. The Prestige
10. Casino Royale

Still need to see United 93,The Good German and The Good Shepard.

well i figured i'd make it #10924893080096

I agree not many big hits this year, Thank god for next year's awesome line-up.

Done to the death, but basically i agree. Nowadays, cinema is far of being as great as in the past, too much special effects and too little good stories and performances. But still good movies today. For example, the queen is one of the best movies that i have seen in a long time.

Nah i'll admit you have the right your opinion but nothing else,i enjoyed a number of films this year and still have a few to see

Isn't that what we were all thinking last year and the year before?

I agree.:cmad:
I thought there were quite a few exceptional movies this year and I still have some I want to see. It may have lacked with big ol blockbusters, but there were certainly some extremely good intelligent movies released.

I thought 2006 was a great year for movies.

We had UNITED 93, one of the most brilliant films to be put together in a long time (my pick for best picture). Absolutely powerful in its understatement.

We had CASINO ROYALE, one of the best action films to be released, ever, and the best Bond film to date. And as far as action films go, APOCALYPTO came along and gave us a very unique take on the genre.

There was THANK YOU FOR SMOKING, a comedy that dared to be intelligent when gross-out/stupid comedy has become the norm (even BORAT didn't avoid the cheap nervous laughs of gross-out comedy).

As far as thrillers go, THE DEPARTED took the day. Overrated, but good all the same. THE PRESTIGE also delivered on its promise of a fun day at the movies.

For us comic-book fans, there were *two* decent comic book flicks this year: V FOR VENDETTA and SUPERMAN RETURNS. The latter has been debated pretty heavily, but I think the criticism is overstated - the film has a lot to offer and is as boldly cinematic as we've ever been given within the genre.

Then there's DREAMGIRLS, one of the best contributions to the musical genre. This film is going to be huge.

And then there are the independent films. THE MATADOR, BRICK, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, NOTES ON A SCANDAL... these are the films that didn't get great notice, but were more than worth checking out. I'm so glad to see this area of filmmaking picking up steam.

2005 was a much better year for american movies than 2006...can't wait for 2007 movies though, it's going to be an awesome summer.

I didn't think it was that bad of a year for movies. It gave me The Departed, The Prestige, Little Miss Sunshine, Casino Royale, and The Illusionist, among a few others.

I'm happy with those.

If you would take Flags of our fathers out, that would be a pretty good list of movies

I personally think this year was very good, just cause some of the fanboy tentpoles didn't pan out that well, a la Superman, and X-men 3, doesn't mean it is a bad year

Departed was stellar, V for Vendetta was remarkabke, Proposition was outstanding, so was the Good Shepard (which I saw last night), I think those are the cream of the crop, and in each department (Action, Drama, Crime, Western) will go down as "one of the better, to best" movies in its own genre

then you got the originality this year, Satire Thank You For Smoking, Little Miss Sunshine great movies, Clerks 2 doing the unthinkable and making one of the most unique movies ever, into a fantastic 2. A Scanner Darkly was the mind trip of the year, and Lucky Number Slevin was along with the Departed one of the best crime thrillers in years

Casino Roayle, and Deja Vu where remarkabley fresh takes on the action genre, and both where incredible

Will Smith has officially arrived as a legit top 10 actor, instead of a major talent but only using it to save the world from aliens every other year

Blood Diamond, Pirates, Illusionist, Prestige, Hills Have Eyes (finally a good remake) Descent, Hollywoodland, Inside Man, Beerfest, MI-3 was solid

I disagree 06 sucked, I think there where some very good movies, and a lot of out of nowhere movies like Lucky Number Slevin, Propositon, Thank You For Smoking, Clerks etc.

There where some bombs, yes I just think the reason it feels like its not that great a year is cause movies that where counted on to be great movies, X3, Miami Vice, and SR where not, and even many people who like those movies don't think they are that good, me even being a monster DMC fan, will throw Pirates into that group to, because it is clear that some people actually don't like it....granted the only people I have ever talked with that don't like it are on these boards...but thats another time, another place

Good year for the box office, bad year for the art of filmmaking.

The early year which is sually dead actually had a few good entries what with Thank You For Smoking!, V for Vendetta and A Prarie Home Companion (Robert Altman's last movie). Unfortunately after that it all went downhill. The summer selection ranged from bad (X3, Poesiden, MI:III) to disappointing (SR, Pirates 2, Lady in the Water, etc.)

And then came the winter. Outside of Little Miss Sunshine and The Departed...what American movies are there that really stand out as Oscar "Best picture noms." Blood Diamond and The Good Shepard were both pretty good but not best picture material. Same with Hollywoodland and Flags of Our Fathers. I still have to see Letters from Iwo Jima, but this has been a year of a bad summer of films and a poor winter selection for the "prestiege picture."

Oh well.

Well, I disagree; in my opinion, a lot of great films have come out this year, but it's uplifting to know that someone who posts in this forum has actually seen some good films this year. Most people who post in this forum just *********e to awful, pop-culture, Hollywood blockbusters (i.e. SNAKES ON A PLANE, X-MEN: TLS, POTC: DMC) since they're the most accessible and easiest to understand.

By the way, I agree that THE QUEEN was an excellent film! Have you seen THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND or MARIE ANTIONETTE yet?

I think this year was pretty good.
The Departed - Scorsese is back with a FANTASTIC movie
Children of Men - Amazing
Casino Royale - Bond is back and better than ever
V for Vendetta - One of the best comicbook movies
Munich - Spielberg does it again, very good movie
Pirates 2 - Highly entertaining action movie

And many DVD-releases of movies from 2005 like The World's Fastest Indian, Revolver, The Proposition and The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada.

Yep, 2006 sucked BIG TIME. I can't wait for next year!

No, the films that have come out this fall and winter are even better and more abundant than the ones that came out last year. I recommend viewing these websites to find out what films have come out this fall and winter that critics and film experts are just raving about. The webmasters of these respected websites are professionals who do this for a living.

Thank you, I personally enjoyed the releases this year, sure it wasn't as strong as like 1994 but I still think it was good

To be honest though, next year looks fantastic Smokin Aces, 300, Hills Have Eyes 2, Pirates 3, Spiderman 3, Grindhouse, Transformers, Harry Potter 5, Halloween, Shoot em Up, American Gangster etc, I think it will be great

Oh yeah definitely. 2007 is filled to the brim with stuff that looks so ****ing cool.

Every year is more or less the same: there are a few great movies, some pretty good ones and a damn bunch of average/crappy ones. It´s the way the movie industry works, the music industry works, the book industry works, etc.

It was a bad year for dramatic oscar winners yes, but as far as action movies are concerned, it was one of the best years ever IMO.
