Let's just admit it...2006 was a horrible year for movies!

Outside of Little Miss Sunshine and The Departed...what American movies are there that really stand out as Oscar "Best picture noms."
UNITED 93 and LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA. And other great should-be-best-picture noms from outside of America include PAN'S LABYRINTH and VOLVER.

And then came the winter.
I honestly thought this was the best stretch of 2006. All the wonderful independent films started being released (and many of them were damn good). And we still had some great entertainment with THE PRESTIGE and CASINO ROYALE.

Exactly! I'm pleased that at least someone who's replied to this thread understands what he's talking about.

I think 2005's Summer season was better, but overall quality wise 2006 is awesome.

Well, I disagree; in my opinion, a lot of great films have come out this year, but it's uplifting to know that someone who posts in this forum has actually seen some good films this year. Most people who post in this forum just *********e to awful, pop-culture, Hollywood blockbusters (i.e. SNAKES ON A PLANE, X-MEN: TLS, POTC: DMC) since they're the most accessible and easiest to understand.

By the way, I agree that THE QUEEN was an excellent film! Have you seen THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND or MARIE ANTIONETTE yet?

No I haven't been able to find Last King Of Scotland cause it hasn't been playing in my area, not sure if I wanna see Marie Anionette...not a big Sofia Coppla fan.

There have been some good films this year, but I tried to make my list based on what I've seen...I saw Half Nelson,it was well done, but boring as all hell.Gosling was amazing in it though,he made it watchable. Maimi Vice dissapointed. Hollywoodland I liked, but didn't love. But overall, not much competition in the "Best Picture" catagory for next years Oscars like last year.

2005's quailty was better.

Good Night,and Good luck
Matchpoint
Munich
Crash
Brokeback Mountain
Capote
The Constant Gardner
King Kong
A History Of Violance
Me And You And Everyone We Know
Millions
Walk The Line

list goes on...

2006 did kinda suck. superman returns really was average. i was expecting something more ... super. the departed was great but not the greatest -- it was afterall, a recreation of that hong kong film which was just as great. the fountain was a mixed bag but i still love it. james bond was a good reboot to a stale series considering the previous awesome bond film was goldeneye which was way back when. the devil wears prada was funny but wasn't witty kind of funny -- it was a pompous funny. world war 2 films ... eh. been there, done that feel to every war film lately. the animated dreck that came out this year should all be buried.

2006 wasn't quite as great as some previous years, but if you guys think it sucked, you need to remember the dry spell that was the 90s.

different era for films and most of these people probably weren't paying attention to films in the 90's -- too young.

The 90's?

Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, Resevoir Dogs, Leon, Usual Suspects, Heat, Casino, T2: Judgment Day Hey the list goes on.

Let's see, POTC2 was really good. Superman Returns was pretty good. MI:3 is probibly the best tv to movie adaptation ever. So, no it wasn't that bad of year.

Any year where you have something as brilliant as Lucky Number Sleven cannot be considered a horrible year for movies.

Is that movie not fantastic?

I think that was one of the best of the year, and literally one of my instant favorite movies

Borat
Little Miss Sunshine
Beerfest

Yes to Roayle, yes to LMS, yes to Beerfest, not to Borat

i can see why people like it so much, and i do find it funny, just for me to put it on par with movies that where actual productions is tough...and in saying that I also like Jackass 2 better on the topic of non production movies

90's were pretty good, not as good as the 40's or the 70's but you got Silence of the Lambs,Forset Gump,Jerry Maguire,Shawshank Redemption,Fargo and tons more to add to that list.

The Departed was the only film I thoroughly enjoyed this year. I loved Superman Returns when I first saw it, but thinking back on it, I realize it had a lot of flaws.

Pretty much all movies do one way or another

Casino Royale BOND WAS BACK!

The Prestige: Bale and Jackman battled out.

Superman Returns Man Of Steel was back not as "I" know it

The Departed: Best movie of the year.

Borat: It was good fun but i like the Tv show better.

Deja Vu: I think it's up there with The Departed. There were good movies of 2006 but not good enough. I hope 2007 will be better year of movies!

Have I missed any movie of 2006?

Rocky Balboa. It far surpasses the previous Rockys, and is right up there with the original in my opinion.

Sorry, I can not take your list seriously because you have Rocky at #5. That movie was a lame attempt to pull at the heart strings, which it did not. Tried to use poor plot devices, and more or less over all tried to copy #1. Sorry But Sly can not write.

Casablanca doesn't have any flaws nor does Citizen Kane or Gone With The Wind.

Superman Returns sucked and POTC 2 was nothing but 2 1/2 hours of action...good action doesn't make it a good movie.
