2008 Box Office Predictions & Discussions thread

So, in order to make yourself feel better you're getting rid of/ignoring movies in their prime form? LMAOL. You make me laugh kid.

First you lose via longevity, then you lost the inflation battle, now the only thing you have left is Bond in his no-longer-prime form to make yourself and your hopes for your boy wizard. Lol. You're a sad sad little man.

I don't think Excel is needed this time around.

lol, this is a joke. Excuse me for using actual numbers and facts to support my predictions rather than throwing out bloated prayers like yours. Your insults are definitely more valid:whatever:

Not my fault that you can't live with the fact that HP actually isn't statistically number one and only is because of inflation not being brought into account.

Once again, you chose to "surrender" to longevitiy and then "surrender" to the top five films routine.

You're a quiter dude. And a quiter is a loser. The best you can come up with is 'right now' as though that makes the past 20 or so years nothing but random numbers. You've already got beat twice dude, let it go HP sucks.

Just saying after Excel the guy vanished into thin air for some reason, don't know why that is exactly though...

So, if he seriously wants to get back into this old routine, I'll just hand over the reigns to Excel.

Next year Harry Potter surpasses Bond as the highest grossing franchise of all time. Looking forward to it.
in terms of dollars yes, but not in admissions. bond has sold 10 times the number of tickets hp has.
Potter has a definitive end. Bond doesn't. I'd say that gives Bond the longevity advantage. But stack up the best 5 Bond films with inflation and I'm sure it doesn't come close to what Potter has done. Bond's strength as a franchise is in it's number of films alone.
yes it does. Kills it, actually.
and how was that a killing/ass whooping? Lets take inflation and the franchise factor out of it and only cite their current movies.

While I just lay back and enjoy the show.

Right now is the best I can come up with? What the hell else matters in TODAYS box office? This topic is about predictions for films coming next year! As shown by the numbers, Potter is the dominant franchise of this era with movies made in this millennium. Numbers that actually mean something about it's overall appeal to todays audience. See I was trying to correlate the two but I guess it may have gone over your head.

I may as well be a quiter, as you put it, as you seem pretty set in your "HP sucks" mode at the moment.

Good day.

Lol. No, dude I've always believed HP constantly got more repetitious as it went on- and not in a good way. 'Same Story, Different Year'. You may like HP, but not everyone does. Imo, Narnia & LOTR is leagues better than HP in terms of quality and story telling.

And after your Bond routine earlier and refusing to look at inflation, longevity, etc. It's kind of hard for me not to remember Excel and your posts from pages back in this thread.

Have a good day, if the Bond & HP thing continues though- as said before Excel rests triumphant in his earlier victory. You disappeared.

children children merry merry make... do not quite contrary argue with each other... stop brewing up tempests for one another such that all is written is poetic chaos... let us excel at other things in life.

/\ Run and hide everyone, it's the Riddler! Lol. :)

How you found something like that to rhyme is beyond me dude.

It works:up:

bond 22 is getting nowhere near 300 million in the us...i hope it tops 200.

bond 22 is getting nowhere near 300 million in the us...i hope it tops 200.

I told HobGob11 that already dude. :cwink:

What are it's chances at 200 mil though? Looking good or will it be an uphill battle?

I would've liked to move passed this...

http://the-numbers.com/movies/records/inflation.php

That's an inflation adjusted list of every movie to make over $100M domestically. All 5 Potter movies come above any Bond movie (the highest being Moonraker with $183M). The lowest Potter (Azkaban) bringing in $262M. So I guess the argument that the 5 highest grossing movies in the Bond franchise "kills" the 5 Potters, even with inflation, doesn't hold up.

Have a nice day.

All Time Highest Grossing Movies in the United States Since 1977. You do know Bond started in 1962 right and that about half were before that date.

Maybe that'd make a difference. I doubt it, but maybe it could. But you could try doing your own research in a debate rather than quoting other posters to make your arguments (a poster btw who hasn't shown one actual stat in his points, no offense Excel).

Excel is the only one who has access to the box office mojo inflation pages that show the accurate data. But, so far his data is ALOT better than "since 1977..."

Therefore, since Excel is known as the box office guru around here. Siding with him rather than "since 1977"...

That would be like saying to Potter "since 2005"....

So if you want Excel to guide you through the data ask him.

Goldfinger and thunderball both inflate to over 430 each (the latter over 490, and thats in the us; bond is much bigger overseas...it wouldnt be a shock if thyre worldwide figures, which we dont have unfortunatly, inflated to well over 1 billion a piece...

this is a better list; me thinks...

http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm

check #26 and #39

there is only 1 harry potter on it, and thats the first which inflates to 367. The other 4 are all from 260 to 300.

That is roughly what from russia with love and you only live twice inflate 2; except bond ALSO has 2 huge 430 million+ grossers, which potter doesnt.

So you pretty much don't have anything to say for yourself and I should be talking to Excel (which I pretty much have been doing through your quotes).

Noted.

Excel, if you feel the need, pwn me with the real numbers so this can end. Maybe I've been wrong and you're apparently the only one who can prove it.

Edit: for Excels post, thank you. Now I know and knowing is half the battle.

I dont see the argument...harry potter vs bond; bond in his prime beat potter.

Potters problem is theyre so close...if they relased 1 every 2 winters instead, there wouldnt never been these huge drops off's.

Dude I don't know everything, lol.

Other things I know- box office isn't my area of expertise.

Agreed. I wouldn't mind all November releases. If HBP were to get a summer release I'm sure it would be lower than OOTP. I think the romance is gonna turn people off especially as it was handled so poorly in the book. I don't see how it can be done any better on screen. I don't think anyone who has seen only the movies could care for a Ginny/Harry relationship so late in the series with 0 development previously.

but as it's back to november...it might beat this years potter performance.

hbp is def. doing 300 in 2008...

if they wait till winter 2010 for deathly hallows...itll be break opening weekend record and could topple 400 million. Remember the way siths hype ballooned as final star wars film? same will happen for "final" harry potter film.

if they wait till winter 2010 for deathly hallows...

That's definitely a second key to success. I believe the reason behind the lack of success for films filmed back-to-back is a drop off of "too early, too soon." As seen with POTC3 this year and Matrix3.

HP will not suffer this fate since it's a winter film and that's when this kind of film does best at box office. But, waiting is better than over cramming a market.

Still pissed that Narnia is in the summer- it should never have made a move to summer months. :cmad:

lets see where potter is in 2042, shall we? Also note "in COMPARISON to Bond it's a 'recent fad'"

But, you probably didn't read that part.... I never said it was recent, I said in COMPARISON to Bond it is only a "recent fad" which even the most stark raving mad HP fans would acknowledge... let's see 45 > 11.

And that's only CURRENT- HP will be remembered as a great film franchise, when Bond is still making films. That's not a bad thing or a put down either, that's just saying HP will never truly reach Bond level. Consider how long Bond has survived. He's not Americana, hell he isn't even American, but he is a key mythological worldwide film character who has spanned MANY years and MANY MANY more years to come.

He's Hercules, Tarzan, Sinbad, etc. or any other mythological hero you can name of TODAY. He has gone through just as many incarnations, takes, and stories. I am not comparing Bond to Hercules, since Hercules has been around for many more years than Bond- even that is understatement. What I am saying, however, is that HP will be looked back as a great film and book franchise whereas Bond will most likely be considered to be one of the KEY icons that modern day and past day has handed down throughout generations.

So, as I said- add inflation, doubt Potter will ever get close to cracking Bond's ACTUAL number- add to that that Bond films will most likely continue for years to come (and I'm talking more than 20-30).

Are you some Clown??? The end of the world is in 2012! So enjoy films while you can!

Let lying dogs die dude, seriously.

1. I personally hate Harry Potter, may just be that I feel like they're cramming it down my throat since it seems like "same story, different year" or that it's released every year.

2. I never called it a "fad"- I said "fad in comparison to" a 42 year old property. POTC is a fad in comparison to Harry Potter. I even went on to explain as such, I believe, in that post that I did not necessarily call it a fad, just a fad in comparison to a 42 YEAR OLD property.

3. I'm someone who sees two to sometimes THREE movies a week. So I enjoy films ALL TIME- films that I like. HP is okay, but overrated- IN MY OPINION. But, hey you like HP and that's all that should matter to you.

4. The world is not about to end, trust me dude I've lived through far too many apocolypses than I can count. Want to know what happens? Here's the story- you rant and cheer and laugh about it for a day and go to sleep saying, "it's the end of the world- at least it was a life well spent." Then you wake up the next morning laugh it off and say "that was fun." They're media stunts. So, we've been through many "end of days" scenarios already and each one has had scholars, books, etc. you name it. News is designed to scare people because that's what gets them the big bucks, it's all orchestrated man. And this is coming from a guy who believes in ghosts, area 51, etc.

And btw, that post is at least a month old.
