2009 MLB Thread, part 2

I'm wondering if the Mets get to keep that money. I mean sure they got back the money they invested but do they actually get to keep the excess?

I don't think that money will have an impact. They've always said the Madoff money was independent from that they spend on the team.

No, it wasn't. They didn't have as big a lead late as they did the previous year.

It sure made me angrier though. The fact that they did it two years in a row, that they did it in the last year of Shea Stadium and they closed the door with a mess, and that the Phillies ended up being the ones to win the World Series.

I was hearing that was one of the reasons why they didn't make some of the trades this year though. Even if it that news was stated as fact by sports guys, I don't think I remember Wilpon or Omar denying it either.

They did make a big trade and signed K-Rod. They just used the Madoff thing as an excuse not to sign Manny.

Looks like we'll have a better chance at winning the WS at home, but who knows? Nobody is perfect twice and the Yankees have hit Lee before.

. And the Championship last year was a fluke. Sorry to break it to Phils fans. They take the easiest possible road to the series and play a Rays team that were just happy to be there. I'll get over it, but it will suck all kinds of **** seeing A-Rod grabbing Jeter's you know what as they raise their 27th. I am happy that Bonds/Clemens never had won a championship after their scandals. I was hoping the one poster boys of this steroid era post-Roger Barroid would follow suit. Wasn't meant to be. Good for the Yanks. Might as well let MLB regionalize the game even more and milk the money from the Yankee revenue and the TV ratings. Sad, sad day indeed. Just had to get that rant out of the way because I ain't coming back here for a while once this is wrapped up.

Why can't a team just be better than the other? What is this BS logic of all or nothing? I don't see how the word "fluke" fits into a team that has made the World Series back to back. They don't make their schedule in the postseason, they don't pick who they play. I'm not a Phillies fan or a Yankees fan, I don't hate either team, but this meatball fan mentality that's shown in this thread (by a lot of people) is just ridiculous. The Yankees are just better. That's it. They're a better team, that's why they're most likely going to win the World Series.

Look, God Bless Steinbrenner/Cashman and Co. They finally brought in a risky free agent that panned out in Burnett, along with two other All-Stars. No one was going to beat them this year as long as there were no health issues.

Every team I've wanted to win each series is going to lose. Rockies lost, Cardinals lost, Dodgers lost, Twins lost, Angels lost. Phillies are on the brink of losing. Only team that won that I wanted to was the Angels in the DS.

All that on top of a gut-wrenching NLCS lost in 06, collapse in 07, smaller choke job in 08, and a 92 loss season this year. I'm waiting for you, karma.

As I said a while ago.... 1 Met Championship is equivalent to 5-6 Yankee Championships. Gonna be a long wait.

What a moronic decision by Girardi! Pitch AJ on 3 days rest in an opposing ballpark when up 3 games to 1 against a dominant pitcher?! This move makes no f'n sense, am I wrong here? AJ can pitch well(3 runs in 8 IP) and they can still lose the game 3 to 1. Why waste AJ here? Yanks are not beating Cliff Lee no matter what. So Girardi would rather lose 3 to 1(and this is being generous to AJ) rather than lose 10 to 1?

So then Girardi follows up AJ on short rest with Andy on short rest?!:huh: Is Girardi trying to sabotage his own team? He is up in the series 3-1, not down 1-3! Andy on normal rest is a 4 run 6 IP type pitcher. He will get creamed in this position. I guess Yankees are looking to take this to the 7th game because it can easily go that route. Not too mention, the back end of the lineup tonight will feature Gardner, Molina, then AJ(with no Posada or Matsui in there).

Stupid, stupid, stupid move by Girardi. Pitch Gaudin tonight! Concede the game!! Then come back with the rest of the staff on full rest at home! A regular rested AJ at home wins game 6, now it's completely in the air. Idiotic.

I've seen 4. If they win this one, that'll make it 5.

I agree. Girardi shouldn't use AJ Burnett on a 3-day rest. They don't have to win tonight, and it is better to use AJ when he's better rested.

They aren't the first team to use 3 starters. But to concede a game? Let me get my Herm Edwards impression on, you play to win the game. You have a better shot with Burnett than you do with Gaudin.

I agree. The Yanks should go for the kill. and if they don't win tonight, I have faith in Andy to close it out at the Stadium.

LOL. But the Yanks aren't beating Lee under any circumstance. Lee is not even breaking a sweat out there, he's unreal now, making batters look like little league players. I'd rather lose a game I know I'm going to lose anyway with a scrub pitcher rather than throw out my 2nd best starter on short rest and have him lose and waste his start in the process. Not too mention the domino effect this has on the rest of the staff now. Really, tonight for the Yankees, it's just a matter of losing 4 to 1 or losing 9 to 1. Girardi chose to lose 4 to 1 and ruin game 6 in the process.

Faith in Andy on short rest? What is this based off of? The same Andy who hasn't pitched on short rest in 3 years? The same Andy who was experiencing shoulder fatigue down the stretch of the season and needed EXTRA rest? That Andy? Andy on regular rest is a 6 and 2/3 pitcher of 4 run ball. I fear what Andy on short rest in this stage of his career will bring. This series is going 7.

You never know in baseball...I wouldnt say the yankees wont beat Lee in any circumstance. Obviously they are the favorite here tonight

i said 4-1 yankees with AJ getting MVP! but lee is tough to beat, could be a defeat. wouldnt suprise me, but i rather close the game now..

Agreed. But say the Yanks win tonight and Mo closes it out, I say Mo would be MVP.

Also, these would be the last games this year for Burnett and Petite so it's not like they will be saving something for the next game.

If by some miracle the Yanks win tonight and AJ gets the win, in the process outdueling Cliff "I have yet to break a sweat" Lee, then MVP goes to AJ. He started an important game 2, being down in the series, with the offense being quiet and jump started the team with a great start. Then to close it out, on 3 days rest?! He has to get it, IMO.

AJ Burnett? I can't think of a bigger ******* to win the WS MVP............oh yeah, A-Rod. Forgot about him.

One of my friends defended Joba last night saying "He struck out the side and got the win. How is that bad?"

I think Johnny Damon's stealing 2nd and then a 3rd on a single pitch will become one of the most memorable WS moments in history.
