2012: A Monster Year? (box office predictions)

1.) Hobbit (successful trilogy; Peter Jackson)
2.) TDKR (probably domestic king)
3.) TAS (upset pick; Marvel's most popular superhero)
4.) The Avengers
5.) Skyfall

7.) Breaking Dawn PT. 2
8.) Prometheus
9.) MIB 3
10.) Dark Shadows

That's a rather bold placement of Bond. The Twilight saga films alone outsold Craig as Bond by over $100 million ww. Adjusted for inflation, so did MIB I. Plus, it's hard to see how Tim Burton + Johnny Depp wouldn't translate to an almost guaranteed $700-800 million (not to mention vampire flicks are still -- tragically -- en vogue). Personally, I look for Hunger Games and Prometheus to be breakout hits as something fresh and original in a sea of sequels/prequels and remakes.

True, but I don't see Breaking Dawn causing havoc. Part One was panned by alot of fangirls and critics. Not to mention the Twilight saga is starting to suffer from fatigue. On that basis, I certainly believe Bond will overwhelm Twilight this time around.

Dark Shadows will probably earn 400 million easily but I don't see the hype behind this film. I've yet to talk to anyone who has even mentioned Dark Shadows. Yes, it's Burton, Depp and Vampires, but the idea of this film raking in more than 600 million is a bit too positive.

I'm hoping Prometheus does fantastic at the Box Office. I really do. It's freakin' Ridley Scott with Fassbender, Rapace, and Theron. And it's an Alien prequel.

Alice in Wonderland is based on a classic story known all around the world, while Dark Shadows is sort of a remake of an old tv-series I doubt many outside US are familiar with.

Boxoffice.com have added predictions for John Carter. That site doesn't have high hopes for its domestic run: $57 million. Their biggest movie in the upcoming two months is at the moment Lorax which they predict will land with $125 million domestically.

All the hype and anticipation could come crashing down like a lead ballon if a film disappoints. A whole year of marketing and fan hype down the tubes in a single weekend. And a film which has flown under the radar by comparison, on fansites, message boards, media etc, can suddenly be put to the forefront if it surprises or exceeds expectations. What film could fit into this catagory? TASM of course. Arguably the biggest character worldwide, he has taken a backseat in the hype department to TDKR and The Avengers. Why? Too soon for a reboot, underwhelming first trailer, Sam Raimi should have been given another chance, there is a stripe on the pants of his costume, or as some anal fanboy mentioned earlier in this thread, Peter is wearing a Ramones T-shirt. Please. We have a stellar cast and an intent to bring a pathos to the films that Raimi and Co. had no interest in exploring.

When July 3 hits and The Avengers has been in theaters for two months and G. I. Joe has been slaughtered by the critics, TASM will be the logical choice, will it not? And if its as great as I am expecting, then people will get on board very quickly. I hope this comes to fruition. So as of now:

Yeah, it is the most surprising billion dollar movie so far, but while Depp/Burton (especially Depp, I suppose) might have something to do with it, plus a well known story, I also think the movie just simply was released at the right time, just a few months after Avatar revitalized the 3D-experience.

Hunger Games as a book is picking up steam in my area. It may surprise people at the box office plus girls like to look at the Hemsworths an this has one of them.

I've never read the books, but I've seen just as much hoopla around the Hunger Games these days as I saw for Twilight before the 1st movie came out. And I think it may cross over to a broader audience than Twilight did (I know I'm actually interested in the premise, unlike Twilight), so while I wouldn't go so far as to say it will be more successful than Twilight, I think it may see a similar level of success.

Opens 2 weeks after John Carter and 1 week before Wrath of the Titans. I believe it will do decent, nothing extraordinary(domestic) and they can build from there. Lionsgate shouldn't be expecting this to explode out of the gate. But Titans a week later will hurt it a bit since there is an audience for that.
