So, what's you guys' take on the Charlie Hebdo shooting? I saw some of their cartoons, and I can understand how they are offensive to most people, but shouldn't freedom of speech also extend to freedom of offensive speech as well?

I have no idea what you are talking about lol.

Freedom of Speech is something we take for granted here in America. It's not exactly something other countries have, and sadly people do still die trying to earn that privilege. That being said, a lot of the cartoons were very insulting. Not insulting enough to warrant death, but enough to warrant being upset or outraged.

Nah man, it's an old barbaric concept -that unfortunately lives to this day, shared by people of different culture, believes, etc- one needs to keep in mind: "Your tongue is your horse, care well for it and it spares you, betray it and it betrays you." (The saying works better in Arabic phrasing)
It means the misuse of words can lead to one's doom.

Freedom of speech should not extend to allowing offensive words, a basic rule I noticed in the last few years is: "Definition of freedom is the fine line between order and chaos". Freedom is not a tool to be used to offend another.

Aziz for the win! Well put brother.

R.E: Charlie Hebdo shooting.

I can see why people would be angry at the magazine, but shooting them up? That makes them worse than the magazine... ****, it makes them THE worst.

People shouldn't die because they said something offensive.

As not only a human but also as an aspiring cartoonist and comedian, my heart is broken to see people doing what I can only dream of doing every day, and inexplicably dying for it. Freedom of speech, whether or not it may be offensive, helps make the world a better, more interesting place. Seeing people get punished for rights that should be not only be allowed but encouraged all around the world is heart breaking. My support and love goes out to the families and the people of France.

(Apologies for the serious note there, I'm not a very serious guy as you can tell most of the time :oldrazz:)

If you are offended by an editorial cartoon, having a serious and civil discussion is the proper response, being an idiot and shooting up a building is not.

Exactly. The cowards who would shoot up a company because they offended them are absolutely pathetic.

Personally I would never take shots at anyone's religion, but I do think what the people at charlie hebdo were doing was very important as they were defending our rights to freedom of speech by being as crude as possible.

The biggest problem is, that cartoon was the equivalent to Muslims as the "'N' word" being said to an African American.

I'm all for freedom of speech, but there certainly is a line where it shouldn't effect us being able to live together peacefully.

With that being said, those killings were not justified at all, and I hope there's a special place in hell for such people who carry out these attacks.

The cartoons themselves were way too edgy and also really gross. I would never publish things like that myself.

But I would never stop someone else for publishing their own art, no matter how distasteful. And these actions these radicals are taking to halt freedom of speech are some of the saddest things out there.

This is how adults discuss things. I myself really dislike organized religion in all forms, but I would never call anyone stupid or, God forbid, kill them or hurt them if they were religious. People also need to get this stereotype of all Muslims condoning this behavior out of their heads.

If music can be censored, maybe the same rule should be applied to extreme images in art.

As I said above, imagine an artist, for example, using the "'N' word" in the images of a magazine or newspaper.

I consider myself liberal for the most part and am open to expression in art, organizations, and media, but there certainly is a line that has to be drawn. I'm even open to people changing the name of my favorite sports team these days (Washington Redskins).

Yea, I see what you're saying man. I will say that, for as offensive as Charlie was, they offended all parties, in true satiric fashion.

I'd like it if people conducted their art with respect for all parties, but there's two kinds of speech: the kind ya love and the kind ya hate. Can't have one without the other.

I agree with you about drawing a line, but I feel that's more of a personal decision rather than one enforced by law. Hopefully some interesting, progressive, and peaceful, conversations can be had from this point forward, conversations that can help us move forward :)

Darn it the even empire that is the New England won. Baltimore blows a 2 touchdown lead not once but twice yeah twice and they are supposed to be a good defensive team! Come on man! Great now I get to hear more and more about MR overrated Tom Brady! I wish my pick on this was wrong has I thought New England would win but I wanted Baltimore to win so badly.

Jon has the best reactions ever.
