31 Nights of Halloween: 2022 Edition

Night 17 with a movie that has Tradition in my house.

Sleepy Hollow

If i would have had any kind of theme for my marathon, i wouldnt have included this movie, because it is simply a tradition to watch it during this season.
My marathons normally include mainly movies i havent seen yet or not for a long time...so its kind of unfair to include movies i watch on a regular base and especially during Halloween.

But since this year is super random, i allow that to be included.

Well, what more do i need to say other than Tim Burton Sleepy Hollow?

A man who captures the halloween spirit like nobody else, and one of the most famous Halloween stories of all time...should be enough.
I really can watch the movie so often and its never dull or boring.

Alone for the visuals...its such a great movie that gets you into the Halloween mood.
The movie still holds up very well and is just fun.

The Devil’s Rejects - 4/10

sigh…trashy exploitation movies just aren’t for me, so this isn’t entirely Zombie’s fault as a filmmaker (his dialogue though? yikes). He just can’t stop showing his love for Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2nd one specifically), The Hills Have Eyes, etc… and that’s fine if you’re into it. I wanted to be fair and give him another chance after House of 1000 corpses and Halloween, but I’m done now.

Spooky Review: After the terrible 3D one, they went back to formula, to give us a film with a fun twist to the mythos and a classic ending.

Spooky Review: Underrated classic. The start of one of my favorite series had that crucial sense of humor from the start.

Spooky Review: This flick is a wild, fun ride, with an actress who clearly doesn't look like a child, walking around on her knees and an all time twist. The only reason I mark it down, is because it's also hideous to look at. All kinds of fuzzy.

Creep (2014)
I am a videographer for work. This movie has unlocked a newfound fear. I'm not a big found footage guy, but this was fantastic. This is my kind of horror. Horror of the mind where you're just uncomfortable and full of dread the entire film. Didn't particularly find the ending good. Felt as if they just wanted to wrap things up. Still, the scene of Joseph blocking the door is the first scene to genuinely terrify me in a long time.

The Invisible Man (1933)
The fact that this movie is from the thirties is insane to me. The effect work is immaculate. It still blows me away what they were able to do at that time period. Also helps that this is a fantastic movie in its own right. Claude Rains is great. I love that this character is just a freaking ****.

Night 18 with a movie whos mix of Genre is in hindsight something that should have been done earlier and more often.

Cloverfield

Its incredible how Found Footage mixed with Horror Kaiju works so incredible well together.
Now it seems to make sense, but back in the day, this was an insane idea.

The movie does such a good job on using the Found Footage genre to bring us closer to how a Kaiju attack on a city would feel.
And then later on it grabs the horror aspect so well...really a good movie that does a great job mixing its genre together.

15. The Hunger [1983] 6/10

Sort of a bizarre movie that had the feel of an 80s music video at times, and was a bit hard to follow as well since there wasn't much of a plot. But I guess this was more of an "art-house" horror than anything else. It was initially jarring to see Susan Sarandon so young too, since I've only ever seen her in movies from the 90s or newer.

16. Case 39 6/10

Definitely not a terrible movie, but this started out as a psychological drama before deciding about halfway through that it wanted to be a horror movie, so it didn't entirely feel like either type of movie. Also the horror movie aspect of it felt tacked on and wasn't done very well - there wasn't enough explanation as to what was really going on with the young girl's character. That said, it was still an entertaining watch regardless.

17. Hellraiser [2022] 8/10

I'm giving this 8/10 for effort, but I kinda feel like it's more 7/10 for actual execution. Overall a solid well-made addition to the Hellraiser franchise (I've only seen the first and second movies btw), it just had a few plot-related loose ends that could've been tightened up to explain more background for its world-building and new characters. Hulu is now 2/2 for me with revitalizations of legacy horror franchises between this and Prey, hope that streak continues!

18. The Ring 8/10

Did y'all know yesterday 10/18 was this movie's 20th anniversary?! When I found out it made me feel old, because I remember seeing this in the theater and it doesn't feel THAT long ago. And of course it made me want to see it again, to see how it held up. It wasn't really as scary to me this time around, but it still delivered as a creepy and suspenseful horror movie. It also reminded me of the time when a lot of movies had very color-graded cinematography, which isn't as common today. I also have to add, Naomi Watts was an absolute hottie in this movie.

The Mummy's Ghost

Credit to this movie for having some of the most hilarious fake dummy action sequences I've seen in a while.

Spooky Review: Few films you love as a kid age as well as this one. There is so much to love here. Class performance after class performance, the cinematrography, the art direction, music, so on and on. But perhaps nothing captures the brilliance more then Julia's all time charismatic Gomez. God, do I miss that man.

Spooky Review: Samara Weaving, Wynonna Earp, and absolute hilarity abound. What's not to love? I feel like this movies secret weapon is even with all the blood soaked fun, it has a heart to go with it's sense of humor. A wicked one.

Last Night in Soho (2021)
This movie gets better with every rewatch. Edgar Wright can really do no wrong. The brightly colored and slick neon aesthetic. The killer soundtrack. So much to love with his directing, and this was such an inventive idea that allowed him to pull out all kinds of different bells and whistles. I wouldn't trade this movie (or Baby Driver) for anything, but goddamn does it make him getting kicked out of Ant-Man all the more frustrating.

The Wolf Man (1941)
There's something very charming about this particular movie that I don't think the other Universal Classic Monsters have. Maybe it's the unrequited love story at the core. Either way, I absolutely adore this movie. The Wolfman as a monster is such a great concept, and Lon Chaney Jr. gives such a heartbreaking performance of a good man who is spiraling because of the unfortunate circumstances surrounding him. Really curious if that Ryan Gosling remake ever gets off the ground. I would love to see what he could do with this role.

The Mummy's Curse

The fact that the "high priest" of all the mummy movies just passes away off-screen is hilarious.

17) SNAPPER. A short documentary about an unfinished animals attack movie about a giant snapping turtle. It’s brief, it’s slight, but the filmmaking subjects are endearing and they really did make a pretty awesome snapping turtle puppet. Also introduced me to the delightfully named Lake Chaubunagungamaug. 3.5/5

Event Horizon - 6/10

There’s a great movie buried in here somewhere despite its obvious similarities to other sci-fi movies (Alien, Solaris). The set design of the ship and overall atmosphere are highlights. Unfortunately the story’s potential isn’t reached. It holds back a lot with its idea of “hell in space.” We mostly just get brief flashes of generic visions/hallucinations until the final 20 minutes when Sam Neil goes crazy. In between all that is dull expository dialogue about gravity drives, what certain Latin phrases mean, or how crew members need to get back to work…You know the most basic kind of stuff. Go all in with the idea or don’t do it.

Spooky Review: Even with a ridiculously overqualified supporting cast, the leads are what make this worth watching. I wish it wasn't so randomly childish at times, becuase when it has fun, it's proper fun.

Spooky Review: How did Adam Wingard make this and The Guest, and still make Death Note? It's truly the great mystery of our time. Anyways, like the right bleed of comedy, danger, and cool. Love it.
