It has something to do with fat vs bone vs muscle I believe. Gorillas have incredibly dense muscle and bone, whereas Horses has lighter density in order to support such animals on such thin legs

I saw this news message at work while I was surfing around and the first thing that came to mind was that stupid joke "Where does a 400 pound gorilla sit? Anywhere it wants to..." I showed the story to a co-worker and told the joke and she smacked me.

I live about 500 meters from that Zoo and just heard about this today.
I didn't notice a thing. Sure I heard two ambulances but I never expected this to happen.
