Clark and Lex are diametrically opposed bookends. Clark puts other people's safety and happiness before his own while Lex seeks safety and happiness often at the expense of others. In the end, Clark becomes the beacon of altruistic light and selflessness while Lex sinks to the bottom of an egomaniacal black hole. SV shows us the foundation from which both characters grow and why they choose the paths they do. They are learning tools - a parable for both inspiration and warning, right and wrong, good and evil. As such, I don't shed a tear for Lex.
