93rd Annual Academy Awards

That's just how she is. I remember she gave some pretty "out there" speeches in 2017 too.

Yeah, I mean she’s a phenomenal talent and while I was rooting for either Viola or Andra, Frances deserved the award too. I remember her making down unusual speeches before but I don’t remember then being like that. Maybe they were though. Not going to bother looking them up lol.

McDormand winning is actually more shocking to me than Hopkins. I thought for sure that Boseman would win, but I at least acknowledged that a Hopkins upset was possible. I figured McDormand had the lowest chance of any of the nominees given she just won three years ago. I had basically written her off completely.

Actually, Vanessa Kirby had the lowest chance for some reason in the betting odds.

McDormand starred in a Best Picture nominee so I guess that gave her a bit more strength.

it will take awhile, but, don't be surprised if the Academy creates a new honorary Oscar named after Chadwick Boseman.
It will be an award for "Young people who are out there fostering and spreading the Academy's ongoing message of inclusion ,diversity and progress".

I figured it'd be down to McDormand or Davis. I actually forgot that Davis won Best Supporting Actress for Fences a few years ago as well.

Speaking of McDormand, Nomadland winning didn't surprise me at all but I have to wonder if it still would have took the big prize in a more normal year.

I was kind of surprised that Nomadland didn't take best Cinematography.
But, I guess Mank had to win at least one of the big categories
It was nice to see Tenet honored for Best Visual Effects.
But , I felt bad for George Clooney, though.
That was his one shot for an Oscar for The Midnight Sky.

Aside from the best actor fiasco, the biggest snub for me was Mank winning over The Father for best editing. I didn't feel Mank was worthy of any awards honestly.

Didn't Sound of Metal win Editing?

Hmmm, maybe my dislike of Mank is messing with my memory. Perhaps I was thinking of cinematography, which I felt should have went to Nomadland. Still, The Father should have won editing.

To noone's surprise...

Oscars Ratings Plummet by 58 Percent Compared to 2020's Show - Variety

Per Nielsen Live+Same Day preliminary national numbers, an average of 9.85 million viewers tuned in on Sunday evening to watch a more intimate and stripped-down version of the Oscars in the midst of a pandemic. That’s a 58.3%, 13.75 million viewer drop-off from last year. The Academy’s third host-less show in a row scored a 1.9 rating among adults 18-49 in the fast national ratings, a 64.2% dip from 2020.

For comparison, last year’s ceremony garnered a 5.3 rating in the key demographic and 23.6 million viewers per the night’s time-zone adjusted fast national charts. The Oscars in 2019 delivered a 7.7 rating in adults 18-49 and 29.6 million viewers. That viewership figure, while up 12% from 2018, represented the second-smallest audience ever for an Academy Awards telecast at the time. 2018 delivered the previous smallest viewership tally with 26.5 million viewers.

I wasnt impressed by Mank either (its outside my Top20 in a weak movie year), but production design was on point and the best 2020 had to offer imo.
