This is some Class A bull****. Editing? SCORE?!?!?!

It's an embarrassment. If ABC is gonna whine about ratings, kick them to the curb, find a new home and stream it w/commercials. This is supposed to be about the artists, and the Academy is basically telling already under-appreciated ones that they don't count.

I'm sorry, but this actually makes sense and it's something I've been saying for awhile.

People don't really want or need to watch a presenter announce the winner of awards like "Best Short Film", then watch that director slowly walk up to the stage, and give their rambling speech in full. It's unfortunately things like this that make the telecast drag for some viewers.

Plus, it's not like the winners of these awards won't be recognized. "The presentations of eight awards — including acceptance speeches — will take place inside the Dolby Theatre an hour before the live telecast commences, will be recorded and will then be edited into the subsequent live broadcast." They'll be included in the broadcast, but likely just portions of their speeches rather than the whole song and dance of each award. This could help to really tighten up the broadcast and move things along a bit faster.

Where is the list of the 8 awards?

Edit: Saw the list of awards. Still don't think it's the end of the world and the artists/filmmakers will get their moment to shine during the telecast.

"documentary short, film editing, makeup/hairstyling, original score, production design, animated short, live action short and sound"

From the originally linked THR article. My personal theory is they're hiding Editing because they're gonna give it to Don't Look Up and don't want to get roasted like they did over Bohemian Rhapsody.

Of course all the cool and interesting awards are shoved to the side for what'll be crap attempts at garnering viewers. The Editing one in particular feels gross to exclude to me.

Keep the Original Score one and perform the nominated music throughout the show.

I mean, on one hand, I kind of agree that *some* of those awards probably don't deserve to be part of a big televised show, because the interest level in the audience for stuff that have almost certainly not seen, and which was never even really intended for them to have seen it, is non-existent. Why yes, I am talking about the Shorts awards, mainly.

However, awards like "Editing" and "Original Score" are not that, those go to movies that have as close to mainstream exposure as anything in the Oscars lineup. Hell, isn't Editing the traditional "Best Director Runner Up Prize", just like Original Screenplay is to Best Picture? These are not minor awards. And why would you even *want* to skip Original Score, even from a ruthless marketing perspective? Its an excuse to play music! Isn't that likely to appeal to viewers?

Cut out the BS. If the actors want to do skits and talk politics they can do that at the after party and stream it.

My question is, what kind of pointless crap are they planning on putting into the ceremony in place of those awards? Cause you KNOW that's what they're going to do.

I'll do what I've been doing. Look at a list of winners after the show and maybe watch acceptance speeches that matter to me on YouTube.

Didn’t they try this a few years ago and a huge ton of filmmakers wrote a letter and the Academy got scared and changed their mind. Where’s the industry saying, “no” to this. They’ll change it if they get the backlash.

Good God, they aren't even trying to hide it.

Look, I understand that the low ratings for last year's broadcast scared the hell out of them and they're trying to do damage control. I get that. HOWEVER, did they even stop to consider that the reason for the low ratings was because it honored films that came out in 2020, which were extremely few and far between as it was due to the pandemic? Even though most of the Best Picture nominees last year were readily available to watch on streaming platforms, films like Mank and Trial of the Chicago 7 didn't really capture the public zeitgeist. Even Nomadland, which won Best Picture, probably still would have been nominated in a normal year but I doubt it would have won.

At least this year the Best Picture nominees are looking a little more back to normal and I think it's safe to say that more people have seen them compared to last year. I'm assuming that ratings will be up regardless due to that reason and the Academy doesn't need to play a charade in thinking that endless comedy acts and film clip packages are what people really want.

You could probably write a computer program analyzing the last 30 years and it will create a montage for them.

“Movies have the power to transport us to the farthest reaches of the galaxy or connect us to deepest human emotion right here at home. That’s the power of cinema…”

So they want to include "musical numbers", and thus cut from the show. . . Original Score. Yeah, that makes a *ton* of sense. Why broadcast one of the awards that gives you an automatic excuse to play some musical numbers, it might get in the way of playing. . . some unrelated musical numbers?

I almost wonder if this is a case of in-fighting over what the people in charge want the Oscars to be. Like, I understand that they want better ratings, because money. However, this seems a decision almost custom designed to result in *lower* ratings, because it reduces the value of the show to those interested in the Oscars, without providing any counterbalancing reason for people *not* interested in the Oscars to care. And spoiler warning: there is zero reason for people *not* interested in movie awards to *ever* care about the Oscars. So, does someone just want to make short term ad revenue by cashing in on the Oscars "brand", and doesn't care if in a few years that brand has zero value?

They should do a 4 week reality show leading up to the Oscars following nominees as they jockey and suck up to all the voters each week. That’s how you create a horse race.

I only just now remembered that this is ABC. Owned by Disney.

Short-sighted, cynical cost-slashing cash-grab at the expense of the artists and actual fans? This has Chapek's fingerprints all over it.

Hopefully the backlash on twitter is working.
