94th Annual Academy Awards

When was the last year that the Oscar ratings *weren't* down from the year before?
Ratings were up in 2019 from the previous year and judging from the nominees, I'm guessing a lot of that had to do with Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody and Lady Gaga being nominated.

James Cameron, Guillermo del Toro, John Williams, and More Urge Academy to ‘Reverse’ Telecast Decision

Dear President Rubin:

We the undersigned urge you in the strongest possible terms, along with your colleagues on the Awards Committee, to reverse your decision to remove the presentation of eight awards categories from the live telecast of this year’s Academy Awards ceremony, including Best Original Score, Film Editing, Production Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound, Documentary Short Subject and both Live Action and Animated Short Film.

For nearly a century, the Academy Awards has represented the gold standard in recognizing and honoring all of the essential crafts in filmmaking. Now, as we approach the Oscars’ 100th year, we are deeply troubled that this gold standard is being tarnished by valuing some filmmaking disciplines over others and relegating those others to the status of second-class citizen. Critical artistic crafts like music scoring, film editing, production design, makeup, hairstyling, and sound will always deserve the same respect and recognition as crafts like acting, directing, and visual effects. To diminish any of these individual categories in the pursuit of ratings and short-term profits does irreparable damage to the Academy’s standing as impartial arbiters and responsible stewards of our industry’s most important awards.

Seeking new audiences by making the telecast more entertaining is a laudable and important goal, but this cannot be achieved by demeaning the very crafts that, in their most outstanding expressions, make the art of filmmaking worthy of celebration.

For the first time ever, I can officially say that I've watched all the Best Picture nominees before the Oscars. Drive My Car didn't need to be three hours long, I feel like I should get a medal for that one alone. :o

What I think will win: The Power of the Dog

What I want to win: CODA, West Side Story, or Dune

Still gotta catch Power of the Dog, CODA and Drive My Car. Thankfully, they're all on streaming so this, too, will be my first year seeing all the noms before the ceremony. And many more that should have been nominated instead :o

Win an Oscar and get potentially covid at the same time!

To clarify, am on board with restrictions being lifted as they should have been. But could easily see a bump in cases from this. More so since it's indoors.

FYI BAFTAs and Critics Choice Awards are tomorrow.

Yeah it was definitely an odd thing to say.

The oscars in end march becomes really boring, everything except best actress is locked. Im interested in the industry but why should I watch this when every winner is clear already?

I don't think Jane Campion meant any harm but that joke fell really flat and backfired instantly. It's shocking because I'd have thought the director of films like The Piano or The Power of the Dog would be a natural comedian. Hey, if the backlash against that comment means that Power of the Dog's chances for winning Best Picture are less likely then keep it coming, Jane! :o

But seriously, I don't hate The Power of the Dog. I actually think it's good mainly because of Cumberbatch, but I'm just failing to see why these awards shows are fawning over it in comparison to other nominees like CODA, West Side Story, or even Dune, which I thought were all far more impressive and impactful.

I haven’t seen Power of the Dog but from what I heard about it, it just seems more of an Oscar baity movie than the others nominated.

yes, it’s an ok and forgettable movie - not a very good one

That happens every year. Remember Marriage Story? Neither do I. (Yes, you could be the one who loves it, just saying it’s kind of disappeared from conversation lol).
