Comics A MODERN take on CLASSIC characters...

Think you could live with your favorite character altered this radically?

  • I can live with all of them like this...

  • I'm digging some of them, but not all...

  • I like the way they are in the current books, not these...

  • Get these abominations of nature away from me...

That i didn't like the whole drug dealer thing either, i was thinking what if he was a time traveling cop but when he got here he thought he would fit in if he dressed like that.

the women look good but what happened to the bust. i dont like that.

The only one I really have a huge problem with is Archangel. And only because his personality and appearance just reminds me too much of Lucifer (the Vertigo comic character, taken after the Devil).

The others intrigue me...though having two of the strongest women (Storm and Jean) join together because they both were taken in by Warren is a bit off too, imo.

It would have made more sense to make Warren the drug kingpin, since he used the women to get what he wants, plus his wealthy empire.

This was just way to sterotypical for me. Why the hell is Bobby Terry from KoF?

Bishop looks like a rap music video extra reject. With his back story and ability to see into the future, this guy had a perfect oppurtunity to turn him into something else than a pimpin' drug lord thug dude.

Rogue looks like she robbed a Hot Topic at gun point, and only got away with what was on the cleareance rack.

pooey!

Do you think we're all just scared of change?

I got some issues with the Magneto, to be sure, but if the stories were good and they still had those timeless essential elements that made up the characters how could ya not follow a Wolverine and a Colossus that looked that cool :)

Okay, he might look a bit 'Swampy', but this is 2006. Should we force poor Nightcrawler to wear a pointy bedsheet forever, just cos we're frightened of something a bit different? :cwink:

that iceman reminds of Terry Bogard from the Fatal Fury video game series.

I don't think anyone here is scared of change... It's what they've changed into that has everyone upset. These new personas are so dismal and bleek, and so far off from their true personalities (personal lifestyles asside), these "abominations" are completely unrealistic to the true nature of the characters.

Given, this could be structured around a social change of events, or could be passed off as another universe, the fact still remains that even in other non-616 universes, the ground-work for their general personalities all seem to be similar. Unlike these versions.

Yeah, we're horrified of fan-artist changes. These images have nothing to do with anything official for all we know, they're just designs that this guy did.

And they still suck. :)

Screw the stories if you think about it these designs are cool., iceamn does look like terrry bogard but it makes more sense for him to look younger and more "hip".

No they're not. What's so cool about superheroes in "punk" "ghetto" or "pimp" civilian clothes?

I'm going to leave this thread considering practically everyone hates these designs but me, so I have a nice life.

LOL... Don't worry, your opinion and taste (in art) is still respected here.

I really liked the designs. Those are awesome. I liked most of the descriptions too. Except for the women. I didn't really like the fact that the had all been with Angel and then hated him. I wasn't really diggin that.

I dunno, I think they'd be interesting to read about as like a 12-issue mini that was written well...and drawn like that.

i love the art and i like maybe about half of the actual designs for them, hmm im an aspiring designer and a x-men fan, i think ill try and whip up something a little more to my and your liking, hmmm yes i think i will, ill be back! ...........hopefully soon

If this was a WHAT IF...?, then I would buy it in a second. It's always refreshing to see new takes on the X-men and the dark tone certainly fits the tone of the WHAT IF...? books.

I like some of the designs. Particularly Iceman, Jean Grey and Juggernaut (who looks downright horrifying). Gambit on the other hand looks ridiculous.

The concept is a pretty twisted take on the X-Men mythos, but, as I said before, I would buy the story and designs in a What If...? book or three-issue miniseries and that's about as much as I would want to commit to it.

everyone just looks like they're from Soviet Russia

except Colossus.

The idea is in the right place, but the look is quite off. On one hand, these X-Men dress as if they are teenagers of the mid 90's...yet they clearly look a little more aged. The mobster look is offbeat for the Brotherhood. The only concept that doesn't fall into the category of anochronistic, is Wolverine. But even he could do without that belt buckle. The illustration was deftly laid out though. I feel that if such a change were to become legitimate, that it would take strength from the solidarity of the theme. Much like when Gran Morrisons run gave birth to the leather clad X-Men. It isn't appealing, but it works.

Why?

Despite what current stories would have you believe, Iceman has been with the X-Men since day one and I think either led or was high up in the leadership of a team once.

That's something I would like. To see one design where Bobby actually gets treated like a founder and taken a little seriously (though...they had Warren banging a 18 year old...maybe they don't treat founders that well..).

I like it, is more down to earth desings, but the story that surround them is not the right one,

The art itself isn't bad at all, and I kind of appreciate the style. It's easy to look at, for the most part. Kind of like a chunk of eyecandy.

I cannot get over the Bobby-Terry Bogard thing; now I keep thinking he's going to break out into some form of bad engrish and perhaps throw the cap after a battle. Stop that.

Bishop with the backstory makes me want to gag; stereotypes do not equal good character development. At all. Plus Victor and the kind of backyard, white trash "I'mma gonna get'cha" look isn't doing it.

I'd totally believe Magneto if he dressed like that, though; pimpin' his cause, and all.

The only one that'd make sense to me is Gambit, and that'd only be applied to the Ultimate universe. If it wasn't specific X-men, I wouldn't mind the designs so much. Sounds rather shallow, but I really don't think any of them need to be modernized to that extent.

I've already seen these before (Deviantart?) but still cool nonetheless.

He should have given Iceman the cowboy garb but i guess this was before Brokeback came out (no pun intended) :p

Heheh, a "realistic" updated version of Bishop is an urban drug lord and gangsta. ;)
