The Dark Knight A stroll into the archives re: Ledger casting

I loved Brokeback Mountain, myself, peni & all.....

if you want a graphic sex scene watch nip/tuck or that serial killer movie with angelina jolie

I seriouly didn't think the movie itself was offensive in anyway. I just thought is was boring. My main issue were the people supporting just carried this attitude that all those who didn't appreciate it were ignorant and intolerant and they were sent here with this film to enlighten us.

I didn't find it preachy at all, actually. Some nudity and one (just one..) same-sex scene, but I found the movie to be more observant in these guy's lives rather than trying to send any kind of message. We didn't have to be told how devastating the story was. Nobody had a speech about how gay men should be able to do this and that.

But, it's your interpretation of the work. I personally found it quietly powerful. I think he asked the question cause he was surprised it brought out a fairly strong reaction from you.

...Now I kinda wonder if my aunt/uncle/cousins saw it. They're pretty conservative and "ewwww teh gay!" but they dragged me to see The Hulk to "support Ang Lee." LOLs. I can be pretty assured they didn't see Lust, Caution....:oldrazz:

Fair point.

Bottom line: I have a few gay friends who were just OUTRAGED at me and chewed my ass out up and down because I was not "moved" by the film as it represented their "plight" and that I was a selfish, insensitive bastard because of it...and this went on for a LONG time 'til I told them to buzz off.

Plight? WTF?

Sorry if I seem harsh, I don't like people thrusting that kind of attitude on me...it's nothing personal to anyone here.

I don't know why people keep talking about Crispin Glover. The guy can't act. He plays the same character in every role; a skinny, deranged guy. And he does look like a psycho, but that's about it. Ledger has the talent, and charisma; he's a heavy weight. He doesn't just run around acting like a lunatic; he's smart. Glover has no where near the chops that Ledger has. There's a reason why Glover is getting very little work....he sucks! Lets take a look at the movies he's been in, that i've seen: "Like Mike", Charlies Angels, and that's it. Those are crap movies for a crap actor.

Im still not sure about Ledger my stance was concrete that i had doubts that he was wrong for the role around 6 months ago it softened as the hype and images increased and where realesed but watching the trailer brought them all back the joker in my head isnt the joker in that trailer. but of course full judgement is reserved until i have watched the movie.

seriously those smug *******s.. reminds me of those guys that go
"I'M GAY AND IM IN A WORLD THAT IS AGAINST ME" vs the guy who says "oh ya.. i'm gay so what?"
Its only a big deal when you make a big deal about it

Except the smug *******s behind brokeback mountain were often heterosexual women.

Thank you. I'm just eternally grateful they didn't cast some "weird, creepy" actor just because of the seemingly infallible consensus that the Joker must always be played by someone "weird, and creepy." Ugh, Crispin Glover? My god, what an awful casting that would have been.

My issue with the movie was that Ang Lee was attached. Seriously, I love gay cowboys, and I would have been more than happy to see more of Ledger's junk. The problem is that every Ang Lee film I've ever seen has bored me to sleep, and this was no different. DAMN YOU LEE, you ruined one of my favorite wet dreams!:cmad:

she wants to tell people she made a difference. She wants to glory of being that one person who brought attention to it, but really in our society it is slowly becoming acceptable. But at a snails pace.

but for THIS role he could have been perfect or yes he could have sucked an actors work history doesnt always equal his/her acting chops there are plenty of actors who are class who havent exactly made oscar worthy movies all thier careers. my personal favourite choice Paul Bettany hasnt been in many films but watching A Knights tale, Gangster no 1 and numerous interviews where you can tell he really does have that slightly cocky intelligent persona told me all i needed to know that he was a perfect choice to play joker especially after seeing the new TDK trailer he would have perfectly fit nolans world.

Exactly.

brockback was boring as a movie thats enough for me.

Hah yeah. I'm pretty tolerant of people in general (I've even softened up to my extremely OCD housemate) but there's a point where you just have to go, "You know what? Just...shut up please."

I read an article about BBM that had a good point about the Ennis's "plight." It doesn't have to be about just gay love affairs or the homosexual agenda - it could have been about any guy who just afraid of possibilities. Ennis was relegated to his pathetic, tragic life because he was so scared of going against the norm. He was scared of being killed yes, but the way he lived his life wasn't all that much better. There was a quote in that article which really resonated with me and how I felt about Brokeback Mountain:

"Life has such possibilities, and from lack of courage or weariness or outright fear we allow it to shrink us into this small, sad space doing this small, sad thing."

I agree, I think it is very overrated and so boring. I wanted at least there to be something crazy like them show a murder or they find out their son is gay and so no and beat him up or something sheesh..throw an alien and robot in that movie it would be awesome

Ahhhhhh.....a loaded question.

I love these, so...so...entertaining, if I may be permitted as small bon mot.

If you want to do a movie about gay men and whatnot, fine & dandy.

HOWEVER:

1. I really do not want to see Ledger's - or whomever it was - schlong hanging out in the first ten minutes or so of the movie.

2. Graphic gay sex scenes of that nature verge on porn...true, Hollywood is loaded with sex sex and more sex nowadays and I don't care for sex scenes, period.

(...and this got an Oscar nod? There were FAR more deserving films that year.)

That is for your bedroom, OK? Call me a prude to your heart's content.

I am not anti-gay, but, I really do not like being preached at - in this case nearly force-fed - agendas or propaganda.

All this crap about the film being a "sensitive, beautiful story"? Forget it.

Not my cup of tea, thank you very much.

If that offends you, well...sorry about your luck.

Now, my turn:

...why did you ask me such an curious question?

I asked because your use of the word "offensive" seemed a little strange, but if you meant it in the context of "it offended me because it was so boring" then that's settled.

But yeah, you'd have to freeze-frame your t.v to see any schlong in the film, it's literally there for a split-second. Much stronger male nudity in most t.v shows and films.

I'd have to ask whether you actually saw the film because there aren't any graphic gay sex scenes in the film. Unless you think ANY gay sex scene is implicitly graphic. There's one initial sex scene which is more like a drunken fumbling and you don't see anything. The heterosexual sex scenes in the film are way more graphic.

So do you believe any film that features gay themes/gay characters to be preachy and part of a gay agenda? The film details a very realistic depiction of homosexuality in 60's America and the realistic homophobia that gay people would encounter at that time, both externally and internally. Would you deem that preachy?

Youre entitled to your opinion, it's just I found some of your comments...curious.

Well you are aware that we're living in a world that DOES make a big deal about people being gay right? It's easy to say gay people have a persecution complex when you've never been on the receiving end of homophobia. A little empathy goes a long way.

I have been at the end of racism sexist remarks and dressing in an eccentric manner doesn't help either. I have never fell into groups between the two races that I am because I am a "sell out" and white people never liked me. I know what its like to be a social stigma. Homosexuality can be hidden, you can't hide how you look.

The way you over come it is fight through it and do the best you can. Not ask people for sympathy because you are diferent.
