The Force Awakens Adam Driver as Kylo Ren - Part 1

Perhaps he was further away, which minimized the blast somewhat (it's kind of hard to accurately measure distances in film unless they flat-out TELL you). Still, he was limping noticeably, looked really tired (he was sweating profusely and everything), and Finn managed to slash his shoulder as well.

As for him hitting his wound, I saw it sort of as a more psychotic version of, say when two football players smack their helmets together, or when a fighter slaps his/her face before a fight. Basically to psych/get themselves worked up. And in this case, to make himself more angry to as well.

I'm thinking Rey is his little sister and that she's way more powerful than him. He's obviously for a lot of young Anakin in him so, that would easily spark jealousy and fears of inadequacy. The perfect tools for Snoke to use to turn him.

As for the reason he doesn't recognize her, she was taken away and hidden when he betrayed Luke and her memory was somehow wiped. So, Ben hadn't seen her close to 10 years and she doesn't even know who she is.

Exactly.

Isn't the fact that Doctor Doom existed before Darth Vader enough lol?

Or the fact that Lucas has openly admitted to basing quite a bit of Vader's character off of Doom.

He was injured! Know way she beats him if he wasn't hurt. But that's how the force works!

I don't think they are siblings at all. Cousins, but not siblings
Agreed. She's not Leia's, IMO. When I was leaving the theater the first time I could hear a couple people already speccing that she was Luke's child.

So did Kylo save Rey from being slaughtered in Lukes Jedi Academy ?? Hmm.....

I think it's very possible. It would tie in nicely with him wanting to be Dark but having trouble committing 100%, especially considering he was also much younger then. Plus I just find it hard to believe that Luke or any of the other good guys would dump Rey on that miserable planet where any amount of terrible stuff could happen to her, without at least making sure she was looked after by a nice couple or something.

I gotta say, I have some problems with the writing for the character, but I thought that the basic idea was genius. No Star Wars villain will ever live up to Darth Vader, so let's do a character who deliberately can't live up to him and get some drama out of that. Oh and good move casting a quirky/nerdy-looking guy rather than a pretty boy.

Exactly. He is actually quite powerful, except he gets in the way of himself. He is his own worst enemy and that limits him to a degree.

Interesting note about Rey, though. I keep hearing people complain that Rey being "too powerful" is a plot hole and blah blah blah. Do people not realize this is the first film of a new trilogy? We still have 2 more movies with Rey to delve into her character and backstory. How can anyone expect everything to be revealed and explained in just the first film? Hurts my head, it does lol.

Yeah, and she already beat him down. What will she do to him with maybe a year or two of training from Luke?

What will HE do to HER with maybe a year or two of training with Snoke? For all we know, the bad guys could win at the end of the next film. As it stands right now at the end of TFA, it's a 50/50 draw between the First Order annihilating the New Republic and the Risistence destroying Starkiller Base.

What will he do? Probably lose again :cwink:.

He's already lost once and depending how one views their different potentials...it's not looking good for him. Which of course is a solid variant depending on point of view. It's possible he grows more than she does between movies. And basically that will be required for him to stand a chance.

No idea on the odds of it since we have no idea how good either Luke or Snoke are at teaching people.

On a side note I do hope the next movie would give a few flashes of the training teach went through. Interesting to see how Luke would take what he's been through into a training session. And probably fun to see Snoke smack some of the attitude out of Kylo Ren.

Driver dressed up a bit similar to Han Solo for a magazine cover last year. Clearly no ****s were given or it was entirely intentional. He indicates here from last summer what was going to happen.

Adam Driver said:
The thing about Star Wars that’s so good—sure there’s this huge [canvas]. It’s space, it’s a long time ago in a galaxy far away. That’s set up immediately. But in the midst of all those things, what has made those movies last so long is that they’re all grounded, which is something that is not so far off from every movie with huge universal themes of siblings and parents and betrayal and trust. That’s so generic and obvious, but it’s hard to balance those things. When you break all of those things down, really it’s just because someone wasn’t loved enough or felt betrayed. That’s what makes those movies so universal. I think they can get in your mind in big and sweeping ways.

Driver also said in September 2014 that Episode VII (2015) would be about "loss" and "friendship". Both true.

In his defense, if he was uninsured and thinking clearly, I think he would have beaten her.

It's not like Kylo's going to remain at a static power level as well. Kennedy said a while ago we'd see him become more and more powerful over the course of the series.

I just don't understand why people are making it seem like Kylo's character is a done deal. As if he died at the end of TFA and that's the end of him, we'll never see him again or what may become of him. When the reality of the situation is the complete opposite. We will see him again. He will play a major role in the next 2 films. And he will come back in a blaze of fiery glory.

I can already see the comments in my head regarding Kylo in EP 8; "Wow! That's what I wanted for the first movie! This is the Kylo I've been waiting for! No more emo Kylo Ren, yessss!" Etc etc etc. Sigh.

I found it interesting that Kylo says, "Show me again, grandfather" when talking to Vader's helmet.

Makes me wonder whether the force ghost of Vader (which we've now seen concept art for) has manifested itself before Kylo in the past.

...And now I'm thinking of Snoke using Force illusions to make Ben think he's actually communing with his grandfather so Ben may be turned to the darkside.

Do you guys think we will have Rey vs Kylo duel or Luke vs Kylo in VIII?
I wonder if there will be a Knights of Ren's second-in-command-ish character...

Never have I ever put that into consideration. Wow....

I think in that moment I was thinking Kylo probably conjures up dark side visions and powers and think it's a "sign" from Vader.....when in reality he's just talking to an empty helmet. lol.

Absolutely insane. Or maybe Snoke has the power to actually conjure force ghosts up and turn them to the dark side in the afterlife?

We are walking into territory we have yet to encounter in the SW films and I absolutely love it. It also seems like something Rian Johnson WOULD do.

I don't want to veer the conversation away too much from Kylo since this is his thread (poor guy can't win, not even on message boards LOL).....

.......but maybe to parallel Luke, Snoke is operating from the first Sith Temple? Did the Sith even have a temple? Maybe he also has certain items from Palpatine that he's recovered post-Galactic Empire.....

All I know or hope, is that we're going to see and begin to understand the Force in new ways in the next 2 films.

I'm pretty sure the First Order has Blue Cross Blue Shield. That's actually my theory as to how Snoke turned Ben; the Knights of Ren have better benefits than the Republic.

I almost feel like some of the negativity towards Kylo is sexist. Like, "OMG he sucks! He got beaten by a girl!" Whereas, if Finn or Poe kicked the crap out of him, people wouldn't be acting like he's such an emo wuss or whatever.

Now, I haven't actually heard anyone say this, so I could be completely off base here. But it's just a feeling I get. And considering that Star Wars' popularity is so widespread that even racists love it (as evidenced by the idiots who said they wouldn't go see the movie because a black guy was wielding a lightsaber) I'm sure there are plenty of sexist SW fans out there.

:lmao:

Though to be fair, BC/BS insurance kinda sucks. So if that is what swayed him, then the Republic must have some really crappy insurance.

I thought he was a fantastic villain. You can obviously never match Vader in terms of pure iconography or gravitas... but i think Ren is a bit more complex. The scene with Han was really well done. We obviously knew what was going to happen, but it was still intense and heartbreaking. You can see the conflict in him.

I also love the whole dynamic of a bad guy fighting against his inherent goodness, seeing it as a weakness.

I didn't have any complaints with the finale and how Ren was defeated. He's clearly badly hurt, physically and mentally. His mind is completely messed up after what has just happened. But he's still a bad ass. He toys with Finn like he is nothing. Then when Finn manages to strike him, he efficiently and brutally puts Finn down with ease.

As for Rey? Well yea she is a novice who is just discovering The Force, but the film makes it a point to show how she is a born survivor with a lot of skills and focus. Sure sometimes she comes across borderline "Mary Sue-ish". But i can allow that.

People saying she kicks Ren's ass? I don't see it that way. Most of the fight she is just about surviving, she is actually retreating. All the while Ren is clearly exhausted and succumbing to his wound. She only actually gets the upper hand when they have that awesomely intense face to face moment where she completely focuses and he clearly loses his focus.

I'm really interested to see where Ren goes from here. Will he go off the deep end and fully commit to the Dark Side?

Yeah, that's how I see it too. And I agree; while Vader is and will always be the greatest movie villain of all time, Ren is more complex and a worthy successor. After the prequels gave us Darth Maul (who said and did almost nothing) Count Dookie (Christopher Lee phoning it in for the first time in a 70-year movie career), Darth Sidious (whose Emperor makeup somehow looked faker in 2005 than in 1983) and Anakin Skywalker (who IS that annoying emo prick that people keep accusing Kylo of being) we finally have a three-dimensional Star Wars villain again who is both intimidating and sympathetic. I can't wait to see where he goes next.
