Perhaps he was further away, which minimized the blast somewhat (it's kind of hard to accurately measure distances in film unless they flat-out TELL you). Still, he was limping noticeably, looked really tired (he was sweating profusely and everything), and Finn managed to slash his shoulder as well.
As for him hitting his wound, I saw it sort of as a more psychotic version of, say when two football players smack their helmets together, or when a fighter slaps his/her face before a fight. Basically to psych/get themselves worked up. And in this case, to make himself more angry to as well.
