The Force Awakens Adam Driver as Kylo Ren - Part 1

It's hard not to love a villain as well written & portrayed as Kylo Ren...so much pathos there, so many different complexities all working at once. He really has all the makings to be a classic villain. If they play their cards right, he could be bigger and better than Vader. Seems like a stretch but it's possible.
It's actually not all that tough.

I find it more ridiculous how no one can comprehend a legitimate stance that some people will not like a character they like.

I do think he could eventually turn out as a solid villain. Bigger than Vader? I don't think the possibility is that high.

I don't think "topping" Vader is possible really. The whole reason Kylo Ren works was because everyone was just expecting Vader 2.0, but instead he's an insecure, unstable young man full of dangerous ideas who is trying to live up to Vader and terrified that he'll never be able to. So it completely addresses the idea that nobody can live up to Vader, thus basically getting ahead of anyone saying he's Vader's lesser. That's exactly the point.

He's a success because he's so different from Vader. Bigger and more iconic though...idk, that's probably pushing it. Vader is just as classic as it gets.

Top him? Probably not but I really think he can as awesome as Vader. He was already great in this. So much more they can do with him, that's why I'm excited.

I certainly get people being excited with the possibilities. Certainly plausible directions they can go with the character.

Certainly some envy for those who enjoyed the character. Much rather like every facet of the movie than liking parts and not others. But is how it goes. Will try to resist interfering with the positive flow of the thread too much.

Isn't Darth Vader Swedish or something for Dark Father? I heard that somewhere. Probably been tricked.

:woot:

Vader means "father" in Dutch.

One of the best parts of Adam's performance is that he essentially plays like 3 different versions of this character. When he's wearing the mask, he's all menacing a creepy, albeit with a habit of flipping out at times. But once the mask comes off, even his posture/body language becomes much more forced and awkward, like he doesn't know quite what to do when he's not playing the "masked badass." And then at the end, he's completely coming undone mentally and emotionally, and is desperately trying to regain control/still act tough.

Not easy to pull off, but he did it quite well imo.

I dont see that as a surprise. Poe was barely in the movie and IMO, didnt do anything signficant besides bring Finn into the story. Meany Kylo was a lead character seen throughout and had a decent story arc. I prefer him over Poe myself and Im definitely no Japanese girl. Im more surprised that Poe seems to be as popular as he is bc I dont think anything about him in this movie is really all that impressive or intriguing
I know Kylo is more established as a character, but it just feel weird and funny that there are girls fangirling him "THAT" way, like he's the male lead in a rom-com manga(comic). Poe is the alpha-male type so I'm thinking girls would easily find him more attractive, while Kylo looks like a whiny kid with daddy issues when he unmasks himself, so I find it interesting that some female audience finds him attractive. Or maybe his masked side that the ladies find attractive, I dunno :woot:

Maybe Im not the best judge for this, but Adam Driver isnt what I would say is relatively good looking, at least not by Hollywood's typical standards
Adam's face can be either attractive or unattractive depends on the makeup, lightings and angle, lol. I added "relatively" because I find him good-looking in some shots and pictures but not always. But apparently for you, he's not attractive at all :woot:

I kinda like the Emo Kylo memes because it's celebrating the character, not mocking it as a bad thing.

Maybe people like that he has daddy issues lol. Are you saying he has a big nose when you say some angles? While maybe woman like his because of the hair.

I wonder if JJ Abrams and co aimed for female teen audience when he created Kylo Ren character? He's the very first YOUNG villain in Star Wars. Previous villains in PT and OT were either old or aliens. I wonder if it was a deliberate move? Or is it something necessary to the story that they made the villain 28 years old, relatively good-looking and not fully trained?

Adam Driver is an incredibly striking-looking man but not what you'd call conventionally handsome. I doubt he was cast to appeal to a wide female audience and the film never really tries to make him look attractive; some of the camera angles are outright unflattering. However ladies do like a tall guy :cwink: I found it interesting though that the movie never really uses his height for a dominant effect, more to highlight how gangly he looks. Especially in the final fight where he's all arms and legs at some points.

I tried to think of what he reminded me of when in mask and hood, and I realised that it's actually the Grim Reaper.

He also does some amazing eye acting in -that- scene.

And I like how in some moments he looks totally punchable and in others he's kinda sad and vulnerable.

I think that their choice with casting and reveal for Kylo is probably the only risky move in what's otherwise a very very safe movie (not to say that "safe" is necessarily "bad", but I just really appreciated an off-the-wall creative decision). Not everyone was going to be happy that the movie's main villain gets defused midway.

When Rey tells him that "you're afraid that you'll never be as powerful as Darth Vader was" the friend that I was seeing the movie with leaned over and whispered "she might as well have told him that he has a tiny penis to." That must have been so humiliating for him, and Driver's face kind of conveys that.

Perfect opportunity if they ever do a porn parody, lol

"You're afraid....that you'll never....measure up...to Darth Vader..."

"Only one way to find out..."

bow chka chka chka

On second thought, potential incest. :barf:

And he runs off and whines to the big boss right after, one of the few times that he's flat-out "whiny" actually.

Well, I don't think we have the word Darth, but father in swedish is Fader. So that's pretty close :oldrazz:

Yes, but it's a coincidence. It was meant to sound like "Dark Invader"

If you say so :o

This. Such a great point, Loki. This certainly applies to my comments regarding Kylo Ren having a very Borderline personality-type of personality. He isn't just twisted by the darkside like Anakin was, he's just a mess of an individual with apparently no comfortable identity.

Agreed he nailed it and pulled it off great.

Adam Driver nailed the character!! Episode 8 will be even more awesome. They haven't even peeked his character.

I loved him hitting himself in his wound. As if we needed any more evidence, it really displayed that something wasn't right with this kid.

It still blows my mind that only a couple of years ago, I'd see Driver's character on Girls and think "this guy is so f***ing weird and intense", without the faintest inkling that I was watching Han Solo's son (and murderer)...
