I think the reason that the Buffy musical episode is better received than other musical episodes TV shows do (other than the music being brilliant) is because it was actually vital to the plot of that season. Most musical episodes have no bearing on the rest of the season or series in general.

I hate musicals. The only musicals I enjoyed were the South Park movie and Team America just because of how ridiculous they both are. Beyond that, singing dialogue is extremely annoying to me.
