Superman Returns AICN interview with Singer

Dark Knight said:
i agree the film could have been better....I wanted to see a big time villain in Returns....not wait for the sequel for one. Most of the peeps that I know who have saw it liked it......they just thought it didn't have great re-watch value and I agree with that.

10 million for not showing the outer space sequence?? Dumb IMO.....

However some need to admit....that there were other contributing factors to the mediocre BO. Releasing Returns a week before a big time sequel with Depp as the headliner?? A big NO NO! Not having a big time villian for Supes to fight.....bad decision.

Also, another contributing factor..which I don't know if it has been brought up in here...is that from what I understand.....the hard corp religious right...boycotted the film and spread the word...not to see the film....do to Superman being " a false idol". And arguably the films marketing strategy was obviously horrible.

I mean the film will still make 350 mill WW.....and will most likely barely reach 200 mill DOM.

Singer did improve on X2 from X1 considerably also.....

Dude that is one heck of a reach, I don't recall this movie having any backlash from any religious sector, the movie failed due to the other reasons you have stated.

Yeah, I agree. That is a looooooong "shot in the dark" with the religious factor. Or, should I say, non-factor.

hey guys......check out my "Origin with SR scenes/plot points" thread

I'm trying to ouline the basic storyline for a Superman origin movie....that incorporates some of the best scenes and certain plot points in SR.....but at the same time......captures the essence of the Superman mythos......which I felt SR missed....

so please check it out.....let me know how you like it.....i'ts still a work in progress though.........

Man, you really are "pimping" your thread a lot around here. It's cool to want feedback, but just chill out a little.

Singer won't be back. He wouldn't deliver a fantastic sequel. And this movie is a flop. He wasted too much money on **** he didn't even use and came up with a limp insipid story that totally ****ed the franchise. A total reboot is nescessary at this point. WB took one step forward only to go 5 steps back.

Not a reach.....just telling you what I heard about the religious right boycotting the film....

Is it really, that long a shot in the dark?? Look at the effect the religious right had on the BO #'s of Gibsons The Passion. Like I said I'm just telling what I heard...

I still wonder how it would have been if Singer would have directed the JJ Abrams script. Hmmm....perhaps we can say some elements that Abrams had in his story in the sequel.

Is that bad or something?

Oh no 200 mil? aww poor jason. He deserved at least that.

I am a little disappointed that it didnt. After following this thing for the last couple of yrs, I think MOST of us wanted it to.But its all good.:)

wait a minute. what about batman & robin? it was a disaster. so i think that BB had it harder. plus superman is superman. it should be like spiderman with a cape.

BB was having more action than superman. but it is superman for christ sake.

i'd love to know how you worked that one out.

batman begins had a few very badly edited, very short fight scenes, a really boring car chase, and batman catching a ride on a subway for no good reason at all...

He does sound kinda sure there.I hope he's just not hopeing.

MB> And idea when Superman 2 might come out?
BS> It will be released sometime in 2009.

This is the first time in an interview Bryan said something "definite" about the Sequel happening he always used "maybe" or "iffy". Maybe a deal has been made ?

What is Singer talking about? Superman Returns has made its money back?

So, I suppose theaters show the movies for free, do they?

This movie has only made 337 million dollars back worldwide. It cost over 300 million dollars to make, including marketing. And roughly theaters from around the world take 50% of what it makes, so technically, Superman Returns needs another 260 million dollars to break even.

The man is an idiot.

re-release with krypton? ok...

oh and singer, please can I see YOUR universe?

I never heard about any boycotts

Singer is a lot of things and finally I think we see it. He and everyone on this board except a few I know, got cocky, including myself before this film came out. We were ready, baby. We were saying it'd dominate spider-man at least with some relative ease. then When pirates looted returns, Singer was literally lost for words.

why I think this is is because he was as much expectant as most were that his movie would explode instantly because it's superman... a new film after nearly two decades. And His x-men movie needing time to draw excitement excuse from the interview made me dizzy. It's in your own movie, dude. "He's superman. Everybody loves him." So you've got INSTANT BRANDNAME RECOGNITION. How many filmmakers would sell their wives for that on their movies? Someone said you could ask the pope who superman was and he'd know. So I'm tired of "it's the marketing, it's pirates, it's been a long time since the last (didn't stop star wars, which I'd say is probably on par as far as brand name recog goes) excuses myself and just wish he'd say "well maybe I didn't do the best I could." That takes balls, man to show humility like that. I'll be ballsy enough to say I did something wrong if I delivered a mediocre film under a crazy huge budget. I have it in me to call it more than mediocre but I being generous tonight.

Once again look into the movie itself for reasons why it's plodding along to 200mil. Should have had that after the first week or so with ease. It's not some mystic force or bad luck, it's a tired worn out, rehash of a film coming to theaters in the age of harry potter, incredibles, spider-man, the matrix, pirates, and star wars prequels. You decided to recycle donner's 70s vision to the wrong audience, pal.

These movies, hell the comics they're based on, to me anyway never seemed like stories made to hopefully be viewed in a few decades as emotionally affecting. Ask Ang Lee about that. Audiences to me seem to like balance between the psychological study of the character and crazy action that just blows your pants off. You handled neither very well imo so good luck hoping someone is affected decades from now. The kid affected me but the rest I thought was a sucky waste of money.

Could not have said it better myself!
It shows his true character by blaming the movies total flop on other things other then the obvious which is HE DROPPED THE BALL!

Singer failed to produce a great movie, and heck he didnt even get a GOOD movie out of a 260million dollar movie!

But like I have been saying for two years he's a hack! I didn't expect a good movie from the start so I got what I expected, and feared... To bad it took the actual movie coming out, and floppin for others to turn on Singer, and agree with my feelings on the matter.

Oh wait let me not make anymore cracks like that or else he might come out, and publically blame me for the movie's total flop at the boxoffice. lol :p

Bryan just admit it dude your a sucky director who's got an ego bigger then the empire state building!
Admit it, and bow out gracefully please... Nobody wants to see LEX backstabbing Superman again in favor of ZOD!

I mean Please do us the fans a favor, and JUST GO AWAY BRYAN!
