Superman Returns AICN interview with Singer

But a movie that makes close to 200m in USA and is gonna make lotsa money in the end can´t be called a big time flop, that´s a fact. That[s what I´m saying, the number isn´t so high you can easily categorize it as a huge hit, nor so low you can call it an allout bomb. Disappointing, yeah, fine, but this is basically a summer of disappointments.
I'm going to stop talking to you for a while, atleast about this subject. Because you are projecting your love of the movie to your opinion on the boxoffice.

Fact is, WB hasn't greenlit a sequel or Singer as the director. He can talk sequel all he wants, it's up to the WB now and they haven't said crap.

frankly I enjoyed Superman Returns a lot more than Brett Ratner's X-Men 3 which appears to cater more towards the non-stop action loving crowd.

Yeah baby that non-stop action loving crowd would be me.

For the record I liked Xmen 1 and 2 but I loved X3. What I really want is for Singer and Ratner to work together and give us X4.

Singer's pacing is always off in terms of action. I can't really speak for Ratner on character development (for superhero movies) as that will become clearer if they do X4, but I loved his Rush Hour, the guy just seems to know how to hit certain points.

Neverhteless I admire Singer for the care and thoughtfulness he puts into his movies. I do think however that he needs to listen to others as some of his choices seem weird. That happens a lot when there is an Emperor's clothes environment at work.

Some one has to be able to say to Singer, umm.. sir that is just a very bad idea.

hmm......Singer and Ratner for X4........X-heaven????

I thought X3 was very mediocre.........same with Superman Returns.....but for VERY different reasons.....

One thing I did like about X3 was that......FINALLY the mutants were able to let loose with powers and kick some merry mutant a**!! lol.......

I always felt the X-men in Singer's movies kind of "held back" ( especially in Xmen 1 ).....of course that could be due to budget restraints.

At the very least, Ratner let the characters loose in X3 in terms of stepping up there powers.......sadly X3 was devoid of the character and story development which I really liked in Singer's X movies.......

So...see.....I'm not a Singer hater.....lol......I just didn't much care for what he did with SR.

You know, I'd like to believe you and hope Singer never comes close to the Superman franchise again. That said, I really believe WB will stay with him. I can't see any other director being able to take over the debacle Singer did with SR and getting rid of the kid or other elements without doing a deserved reboot.

I also think that since Jude Law is supposed to be in talks with WB to become Zod in the next sequel, they are going ahead with Singer's approach.

It's really a shame. We're going to have to have another film with Zod, and also the continued presence of Superson in the film. My guess is that the "Alien" Singer is referring to, is in actuality the Kryptonian Zod. That would also fit into his "Wrath of Khan" motif that Singer keeps talking about.

That seems to be a rumor to me.

Singer and Ratner each have their strengths. They are at opposite ends of the spectrum. What a shame there is no middle ground, no halfway point.

Singer's too slow, understated and vague; Ratner's too unsubtle and frenetic.

And now I know that the innovative scenes from SR with Superman looking at Krypton's remains will NOT be on the DVD, I'm not buying it. I want to see something new. Smallville has better drama and excitement than SR ever has - Smallville even tampers with the mythology (introducing the caves, Jor-E's visit to earth in the past, the various kryptonite mutants, Dr Swann etc) but it's all done in a brilliant way.

SR was devoid of traditional comicbook mythology or Smallville-type re-imagined mythology. It fails big time in those areas. The flight to Krypton was one area where it might have succeeded, and now we aren't even going to see that!

Fine, get back to me when the DVD sells big and/or the sequel is announced with Singer directing...:p

What is the Daily Express? Looks like a tabloid.

It's a UK tabloid, but one of the more responsible ones. It doesn't tend to cover celebrity crap or include made-up stuff.

Taboids like the Sun, Star, News of the World and Mirror tend to be the trashy ones. The Express and also the Daily Mail are more high-brow.

High brow in the sense that if members of the National Front and BNP read The Sun, then Tory-voting scum read The Daily Mail. It's a silk-wrapped turd.

Oh, okay, thanks.

I'm surprised Singer is hinting at something new which is brainiac. I usually thought he would try to redo superman 2 for the sequel. He probably will with the story though.

Smallville has better characterization than SR will ever have. The only thing going for SR is its Vfx.

where did he said brainiac? i only read an alien. and this could be zod.

^See what I mean Singer is even afraid of trying a new villain.

Fact: WB greenlited the BB's sequel...only 5 days ago.
Fact: We knew that WB were happy about the BB's b.o. results only in August 2005.
Fact: Time Warner put Superman Returns in the highlights of the quarter.
Fact: Singer (the director), Lee (one of the producers), told us about the sequel in the WB panel. They gave us even a vague release date: 2009.
Fact: SR is going to cross the BB's ww gross.
Fact: There are very good chances for SR to cross the 400m ww (Only the 2 spidermans and the 2 x-mens did it).
Fact: You haven't wrote anything positive about SR since it was greenlited.
Fact: You are an hater.

Even if SR makes more than BB numbers it wont be much more and with a budget like that it SHOULD be much more than BB at the BO.

USE a different villain and story SINGER.DAMMIT!!!

so now even you are scared right

I am not supposed to show my fear DB so I wouldn't call myself scared, but kind of shocked if this is nothing more than a rumor.

Zod was fantastic in Superman 2 and could have fit in the storyline for Returns, but now I don't know where he would fit in? :(

So if there is a SR3 will they make superman evil like in superman 3???
