Sega Alien: Isolation

Why does there have to be any extra content at all? Why can't you just buy the complete game, whether you decide to buy it at launch, or a few days later? Or if you decide to buy it at retailer Y, instead retailer X?

I get Pre-order Bonuses in form of Artbooks, soundtracks, statues, etc. But game content shouldn't be kept from you, simply because you refuse to buy a game blindly, without knowing the actual quality of the end product.

Pre-order game content, just like disc locked DLC, needs to go away.

That's exactly why players deserve content you don't get. They are putting money up front while you just sit there and wait for a sale or a used copy that the publisher and devs see nothing of, they should be rewarded for that.

I can agree that retailer specific bonuses can be a pain as not everyone may have a particular retailer in their area, but bonuses in general are fine. Preorder bonuses aren't going away and id wager that they will only increase as more gamers start to go digital. These retailers will need to find ways to keep customers coming into their stores rather than going through PSn or Xbox Live to obtain their games and that more than likely will lead to more pre order, retailer specific bonuses.

That is a good point. I'm not fond of the practice, but I think saying it's a reward for hardcore fans or blind buyers isn't totally void to say. Plus, like I said, most of the time it's just useless junk anyway. Not one gets up in arms whenever the pre-order bonus is a golden gun skin for Gears or some equally useless piece of ****.

LOL fans freaked out because they thought this pre-order bonus wouldn't be available later.

LOL, funny gamers with their attitudes.

And going forward, we will probably see more preorder DLC like this and less useless junk like golden weapons as you mentioned as retailers try and combat the coming digital age.

There's a $70 deluxe version of Dragon Age. I really hope that's sold digitally on consoles.

The only locked content you see these days is the stuff Sony gets for their games. Like the Assassins Creed missions or Adam West skin for Arkham, etc. Those seem to be the only true "exclusives". All these preorder bonuses show up as DLC a month after the games release.

Exactly. If people really believed this wouldn't be available later, they are kind of dimwitted.

I say to wait with the purchase of a game, until you know its actual quality, and you talk about something else entirely. I'm not saying wait until the game gets cheaper, I say wait until you know it's worth it.

Also, you say players deserve to get free content for putting money upfront, instead of waiting? Those very same players are also the ones that deserve to be completely ripped off, again and again, by games like Aliens: Colonial Marines.

And this is just simply going to be terrible for gamers. Sure, I understand trying to give people incentives to still come to the store, doesn't mean I condone locking away game content. It's just stupid when you have gamers that in fact support the developers by buying the games digital, where you can't immediately get great cheap deals on games or re-sell them, but then punish them for not going to their nearest retailer.

Then there this disgusting article. Anyone read it yet? It's about Gamestop trying to get involved during the process of a games development cycle, trying to fund and develop game content, exclusive to Gamestop. I don't want to see this **** happen. But every time anyone Pre-orders a game for extra content like these Ellen Ripley missions, you just encourage them. For now it's still okay, since the Nostromo Edition isn't Gamestop exclusive and you can pre-order it anywhere. But if this goes on, we'll soon have these Gamestop Exclusive Special Editions, that offer you content that you can't get anywhere else. And I don't want to support Gamestop.

I mean, you think it's actually good that players don't get more content, because they don't put money up front and wait to get a game cheap or a used copy. Gamestop is the place where this ****ing happens. They make most of their money off of used game sales. They don't nearly make as much money from selling new games. All Pre-ordering games does, is ensure that you stay loyal to that retailer, and they get multiple chances to sell you used copies of a game, every time you come back. There goes your money that devs will never see.

We'll see, is all I can muster to say about it now. Maybe more elaborate DLC like this one will become standard, but I honestly think the majority will still be mostly cosmetic or weak content that doesn't really matter. I just can't find myself getting passionate about something so trivial.

I see no problem with retailers funding development of exclusive content. IMHO business is business.

They are other hostiles in the game beside the Alien. Humans and synthetics, I think.

I was, but I've read some early impressions that have been kind of weak. A lot of them seem to be saying the AI of the Alien is wonky, and the game often cheats just to challenge you (such as going in one room to run from the Alien, only for it to randomly pop in to the same room you just entered). I don't know, people are saying AI is one of the last things done for a game, so maybe it won't be as bad. I'm also curious about how much other hostiles plays into the game. They've been rather silent on that front, outside saying that they're there, and you can go through without killing them.

The thing I'm most excited about, at this point, is the original cast DLC. But October is so loaded, and with those early impressions, I'm probably going to just wait and see.

What else is coming in October aside from The Evil Within? As long as the AI is step up above Outlast, I'll be content.

For me, there's The Evil Within, Smash Bros (3DS), The Legend of Korra, and Bayonetta 2. Plus I have a pretty decent amount of stuff outside games I plan to pick up, so with that and bills, not much room to squeeze.

Fair enough, this game has intrigued me from the get go because this is the first time a triple A title has embraced modern (or Post-Penumbra as I like to call it) survival horror tropes and design philosophy.

I think early impressions are all from the Survivor mode, which is just another word for their "challenge" mode. As for other hostiles, there are friendlies and enemies. Overall, most early impressions I've read and watched recently have said the game is terrifying and the alien has great A.I. since it isn't scripted and learns the player's behavior.

To be honest, I've haven't read any negative early impressions. Can you link them? If not, when did you read about them?

No, these impressions were from primarily from a demo at GDC or PAX maybe. This was before the Survivor Mode was revealed, which I believe was revealed very recently, right? I read some of these impressions on NeoGAF, as I lurk there. I read about it on another website, but truthfully, I couldn't tell you which off the top of my head. I could try to dig up something, but if you have some recent stuff that contradicts what I've read I'd love to read it.

Well, from the recent stuff everyone says the Alien works great. And while we didn't get see any gameplay, I think survivor mode was playable at PAX. All I know is, the majority of early impressions have been very promising. I just hope this game turns out good. I guess I will find out on Oct. 7.

Well, I goggled impressions and I came up with one. The build I was talking about was at Comic-Con. This is from Rock, Paper, Shotgun. I would link, but there's a liberal use of language in it. If you want to find it simply google Rock, Paper, Shotgun and Alien.

Creative Assembly’s xenomorph is, in their words, “lethal, terrifying, and believable.” Mostly that first one. In the demo, each time I was spotted resulted in immediate death. No chance to escape, or to hide after being seen. Death. You lose. Good day, sir. Tension gone, replaced only with frustration. I wasn’t the only one — I spoke to another journalist who flat-out quit the demo, he was so tired of dying in the last bit.
“Just play the game better,” says the imaginary Internet commenter in my head. The problem is that the xenomorph’s AI is frustratingly inconsistent. The hallway I was in had mini-walls to hide behind, every five feet or so. At one point I heard the xenomorph coming and squeezed up tight behind one — no problem. It walked right by me, a mere two feet from my hiding spot. Then as it began to circle to the side I’d been hiding on, I slipped over to the other side of the wall (where it had just walked). This time as it passed by, it saw me. Blood. Murder. Death.
The same exact hiding spot, the same circumstances. It’s like the xenomorph is alternatively clairvoyant and the absolute dumbest creature in the universe
This, unfortunately, wasn't the one where the guy mentioned leaving a room with the while looking at the Alien, and having it be in the next room right in front of him as he entered it.

EDIT: This from March, so it is older. I'll look up some newer impressions when I can then, if they tell a different story.

To be fair, that was over two months ago, and I would imagine there are a few glitches in a earlier build and have since been tweaked. From what I've seen and read these last few days, the Alien works just fine. Still, I have to admit the comic-con impression is a bit worrying. We will have to see how the game stacks up in the next two weeks in reviews.

I never care for reviews or impressions, but that was clearly an early build. And the impressions from the latest game informer issue were nothing but good things.
