20 Sky Divers + 1 Silver Surfer = A 'Fantastic 4' Aerial event at the "600"

From a press release

CONCORD, N.C., (May 24, 2007) – A team of 20 world-class sky divers and a world champion sky surfer will execute a spectacular aerial stunt at Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The pre-race stunt will promote the upcoming motion picture Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and will be attended by all four of the film’s principal stars.

The one-of-a-kind event – which will be witnessed live by 180,000 racing fans as well as Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer stars Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis – will be part of the NASCAR special televised pre-race show on Fox Sports (5p.m. ET).

The stunt begins at 13,000 feet, as the 20 sky divers in flaming orange jumpsuits create a freefall formation of the numeral “4.” Then, the beloved comic book icon, the Silver Surfer, as enacted by world champion sky surfer Oliver Furrer, will surf the sky at 125 miles per hour, smoke trailing from his silver board, and break through the “4” formation.

A freefall video crew will capture all the action from this one-of-a-kind stunt. The video feed from two additional sky diving cameramen will be transmitted live on NextelVision JumboTrons at track and broadcast along with interviews with the film’s cast members, who are serving as honorary race officials. The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer cast also will be taking part in various activities around the track prior to the main event.

“This one-of-a-kind event continues the long-standing tradition of exciting pre-race entertainment for the Coca-Cola 600,” said Jerry Gappens, senior vice president of events and marketing for Lowe’s Motor Speedway. “Our fans and a worldwide television audience are in for a fantastic pre-race show.”

In Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, the first family of superheroes meets their greatest challenge yet, when the enigmatic, intergalactic harbinger of doom, the Silver Surfer, comes to Earth to prepare it for destruction. As he races around the globe wreaking havoc, Reed (Ioan Gruffudd), Sue (Jessica Alba), Johnny (Chris Evans) and Ben (Michael Chiklis) must muster all their powers to battle the forces of evil before all hope is lost.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, opening in theaters everywhere June 15, is the second installment of the live-action film series based on what fans around the globe know as “The World’s Greatest Comic Magazine. Fantastic Four, directed by Tim Story and released in the summer of 2005, had a worldwide theatrical gross of $330 million and became one of Twentieth Century Fox’s most successful DVD titles ever.

Tickets for the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway are available online at www.lowesmotorspeedway.com or via phone at: 1-800-455-FANS (3267)

Alba in Charlotte for stunt at Speedway
Jessica Alba -- ranked No. 2 on this year's "Hot 100" list by Maxim magazine -- will join her "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" co-stars at Lowe's Motor Speedway on Sunday for "a very fantastic stunt."

Alba, whose screen credits include "Sin City" and "Into the Blue," reprises her role as Susan Storm/Invisible Woman in the sequel to the 2005 action flick that grossed $155 million domestically. "Rise of the Silver Surfer" is set for release June 15.

Ioan Gruffudd (Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic), Chris Evans (Johnny Storm/Human Torch), and Michael Chiklis (Ben Grimm/The Thing) also will meet with NASCAR drivers and fans during the group's promotional appearance, which coincides with the big Coca-Cola 600 race.

The four actors will be at the track all afternoon, but they'll be involved in various events during much of the day and calling it quits about 6 p.m. Details of the stunt are being kept under tight wraps.

LOS ANGELES - A Marvel Comics hero is giving George Washington some company on the quarter, but the U.S. Mint doesn't think the stunt is so super.
To promote the upcoming film "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," 20th Century Fox and The Franklin Mint altered 40,000 U.S. quarters to feature the character.
The U.S. Mint said in a news release Friday that it learned of the promotional quarter this week and advised the studio and The Franklin Mint they were breaking the law. It is illegal to turn a coin into an advertising vehicle, and violators can face a fine.
"The promotion is in no way approved, authorized, endorsed, or sponsored by the United States Mint, nor is it in any way associated or affiliated with the United States Mint," according to the release. The federal mint did not say whether the studio or the private Franklin Mint would face a penalty.
The altered coins are quarters honoring the state of California that entered circulation in 2005. They feature George Washington on the front, as usual, but a colorized version of the character on the back. All 40,000 are slated to be in circulation throughout the country by the end of Memorial Day weekend, and about 800 were released in each state.
Fans who find the customized quarters can enter a contest online to win prizes and a private screening of the movie.
The Franklin Mint mainly produces collectibles or commemorative medallions. Unlike its other commemorative coins, these aren't being sold, said Franklin Chairman Moshe Malamud. He emphasized that putting the character on the coin didn't alter the integrity of the coin.
"We are very, very protective of the currency of this country. Our goal was to enhance the coin," Malamud said.
Fox spokesman Chris Petrikin said that neither the studio nor The Franklin Mint intended to violate any laws or "suggest that there was any approval from the U.S. Mint or the U.S. Government" for the Silver Surfer coins.
"These are commemorative coins like many the Franklin Mint creates on a regular basis for various properties," he said. "We were confident this coin followed the same procedures and guidelines but will certainly take any necessary steps if advised otherwise."

D@MN!

I knew it...what a ******edly stupid marketing stunt:cmad: Fox has wasted money on the possible profits of this film by simply attempting this:o

Wow...though I feel this to be stupid I WANT A SURFER COIN!!!

This is really starting to hit a lot of news outlets...the Associated Press, CNN, ABC, MSNBC...
http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&i...&oi=news_result&resnum=1&ct=more-results&cd=1

I imagine this story will make the nightly news on the major networks by Monday evening, if not before. It'll probably be on MSNBC, CNN, etc by tomorrow. (It's in rotation now, for all I know.)
And if there's an actual recall, these coins will be even more sought after, meaning more coverage.

It reminds me a bit of the "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" lightbox campaign that resulted in the bomb squads being called out in Boston.
Time-Warner & Cartoon Network gladly paid the city's costs for that incident. They got a ton of publicity for the "Aqua Teen" characters for a fraction of the cost of traditional advertising.

I guess this is like "white collar" guerilla marketing.
At least these quarters won't scare anyone! :woot:

I'm not sure how they do it but I know I've seen ads for altered US coins before and nothing seemed to come of it. I am pretty sure they colorized some of those state quarters and were selling those at one time.

Even though the Mint is angered, it's not going to hurt the film one bit. In fact the more publicity the better. I'm sure FOX doesn't mind this one bit. I'm also sure that it will be on the news stations, especially FOX.

Can someone explain to me the difference between this Franklin Mint and the US Mint, and how it is they are able to make these coins and other monies that can be released into circulation? Can you spend these quaters?

Well i'm not sure how much a fine would be, but this isn't hurting anything or causing gov resources to be used like that Aqua Teen fiasco did. Hopefully this generate publicity for the film.

Yeah, which of these two scenerios sounds more plausible:

"Okay, is everyone ready to go to the movie . . . wait a minute. . . are those the guys who defaced that US currency? We're not going to see a film made by those criminals!"

Or someone picking up a newspaper with an article about this and saying:

"What's this? They're making a Silver Surfer movie? I LOVED him when I was a kid. When's that going to be out?"

To be honest, that is technically counterfieting, and you all know how illegal that is

Not really. If they created fake quarters, that would be counterfieting. If they use existing quarters (which I assume they are from what I've seen) that's defacing currency.

. . . Not too different from those machines you see at the zoo that twist, stamp and re-shape pennies.

It would look better if the SS was just etched into the coin IMO

The Franklin Mint usually makes commemorative coins that are not meant to be used for anything but decoration and are not legal tender. This time they've taken regular coins and defaced them.

Hell Yeah.....teenagers are going say.....AAAAAWWWWWW that is soooooo cool.......slap the establishment.....they love that.

U.S. Mint may not be happy but i'm sure Fox are.In this case 'bad' publicity is good publicity for FF2.
