Homecoming All the technical details of this deal

Sony will be aware of what Marvel Studios wants to do with the character, but they won't be directly influencing what Marvel Studios wants to do with the character.

Conversely, Marvel Studios would be aware of what Sony wanted to do with any existing MCU characters, but would not likely have any direct influence on those wants.

Exactly, because sony themselves had no idea what they wanted to do with the character because all of their ideas stink.

honestly man I'm beginning to think that arguing with him about anything in regards to this partnership is kind of pointless.

Sony won't have any direct influence on what Marvel Studios wants to do with Spider-Man - even though they control the license to Spider-Man - because the parameters of the deal do not afford them that ability.

Marvel: Hey Sony, you guys did such a great job with your TASM franchise. Please tell us any ideas you have for Spider-Man in our Avengers movie. I'm sure you have a ton of great ideas. :o

Sony could've easily demanded that they be able to 'creatively oversee' and influence MS' use of the character of Spider-Man because they still control the license to the character as part of this deal, but they didn't.

Sony came to Marvel "hat in hand" after ASM2 continued the steady decline of the franchise at the box office. They were not in a position to make any demands.

Though the deal involved ceding considerable control over Spidey's cinematic appearances, they were wise to cut the best deal possible.

They didn't "cede considerable creative control over Spidey's cinematic appearances", at least on their end of the equation. The deal they cut makes that clear.

Anyone who doesn't think that a major motion picture studio will not be exercising some level of creative influence over the production of a multi-million dollar film that they are solely funding is a fool.

Make no mistake. They did not bargain with Marvel because they "knew they couldn't do Spider-Man justice and that Marvel could do it better". They made a deal with Marvel because they know people want to see Spider-Man interact with other Marvel franchises. And giving people what they want means money. Period.

Sony isn't going to be bowing to Kevin Feige and co. when they show up to provide input on the 2017 film. They will undoubtedly respect his opinion and the massive success he's brought to Marvel. But make no mistake...these are studio executives. There are no opinions they value more than their own.

Sony will be making some creative decisions regarding the new Spider-Man series and characters. Characters from that series will be appearing in the MCU.

This means that Sony will have some level of influence within the MCU. This is not debatable. A lot of people are screaming "No way! Sony knows they suck! They're totally gonna let Marvel call all the shots!".

Wishful thinking, friend. Delusional, wishful thinking.

QFT. :applaud:

Sony's influence in the MCU will come on their end, though, rather than on Marvel Studios'. It'll also come in terms of casting, costume design, etc. for Civil War and Spidey's appearance therein.

^ If by "that", you mean everything that I've been saying and that people have been coming down on me for saying, then, "Yes. Yes I am".

I think I also speak for Digific (forgive me if I'm mistaken) when I say that I feel that Sony (or anyone outside of Marvel Studios for that matter) having any creative influence over the MCU is gut-wrenching.

I'd MUCH rather never have Spider-Man in the MCU than have the possibility of the pure MCU being tainted by outside influence.

While most are crying tears of joy over having Spider-Man "back home", I'm crying tears of sadness over the demise of an untarnished MCU.

^ I actually hold the opposite opinion as far as the MCU is concerned. I wouldn't have made the deal because it sounds a death-knell for the TASM franchise, but think the idea of Sony being able to play in Marvel Studios' 'sandbox' because of this deal can only bring good things.

sony better be committed to making good movies

being tied to the MCU shouldn't give them a sense of stability or a "sure thing". Marvel took a big risk here, I just hope sony doesn't mess things up even more.

^ I wouldn't have made the deal because it sounds the death-knell for the TASM franchise, but I do acknowledge that it IS a great opportunity for Sony and has the potential to make the MCU better than it already is whilst opening up storytelling possibilities that wouldn't exist without it having been made.

I think that's where our views about this diverge quite a bit.

I, admittedly, only care about Marvel Studios and the MCU. Everything else is entirely disposable in my eyes. I could care less what Sony or Fox do...as long as there is clear line drawn in the sand between them and the MCU.

Now that line is blurred. And I think that sucks.

^ Yep.
Suddenly the idea of a Sinister Six movie doesn't sound so terrible. it will be set in the MCU, right?
