he's gotten paid 20 million a film a handful of times, and wb wants him for a role. it's not that crazy.

Eight to ten years ago when he was on top of the world, yeah.

Now, when his last big budget action flick flopped hard, not so much.

Smith could (since we don't KNOW right now) be being looked at as an actor in the DCCU for the long haul, especially if he plays say, Black Manta. That's him in Suicide Squad, boosting a totally unknown to the general public property, in Aquaman (helping to give a character that needs pop culture rehabilitating a boost) and in a JL film perhaps as a Legion of Doom member. I get the down sides of Smith being involved for sure. I also get the upside though, as well.

With the way the project is looking, Smith needs Suicide Squad more than it needs him. We're in for a sleeper hit, if my predictions are correct.

It seems that way, it was definitely a great move from WB!

And I must say that I won't cry if Smith decides to pass on this or they decide to cast someone else.

Smith has mainstream name recognition that WB could benefit from. But he's unnecessary for a quality film. In fact, not having him might result in an even better film.

Agreed on both accounts!

I think right now, that WB kinda does need to look at Smith level or similar type talent for the DCCU. They are not in a Marvel Studios situation with these properties that are not well known right now, or even if they are well known, not necessarily respected. Marvel buitl up to the point that they could make GOTG based purely on their own brand. Right now, WB/DCE doesn't have that, so for Aquaman, Suicide Squad, Green Lantern... Yeah, well known names are going to be the order of the day I suspect, to get buttocks into seats.

He sounds awfully familiar... :hmm

The game has changed with Harley and Joker in the fray, though. They'll definitely be milking their appearance all over the marketing. That alone affords them the luxury a tentpole film with an A-list star would normally occupy.

Yeah, I think people are way overestimating Smith's draw. He isn't half the star he used to be, and definitely wouldn't help ticket sales in the way that he used to be able to. I'd say Tom Hardy likely being in would be bring a bigger boost than Smith at this point. No way Smith would get a huge payday like that for something like Suicide Squad.

Nah, Smith signs on and they'll be promoting the crap out of it. His big comeback, ensemble piece, playing anti-hero if not outright villain, etc. It'd be pretty huge on it's own and if it ain't the marketing machine will make sure it is.

And I really don't think Hardy is anywhere close to that kind of draw.

Honestly I think Smith is two flops away from being box office poison.

Lets not go way overboard here. Tom Hardy isn't anywhere near A-list status and even with Smith fading a bit Hardy still isn't nearly as big of a star as he is. Tom Hardy has never opened a film.

Smith still gets the covers of magazines and he's perfect for making the rounds for talk shows. Signing him alone gets this movie better recognition with casual fans. Watch twitter/facebook blow up if/when he's cast. That's money and WB knows it.

I think Smith is still very close to being the draw he has been for a long time. He's not a flash in the pan, flavor of the month. He has a history that goes back a long way in entertainment. He's just made some bad project choices and frankly, been a bit overbearing behind the scenes recently. Hopefully he can see that passing on Django or his demands during MIB III were poor choices that have affected his career.

All that out there, the international market is so important today, and WB/DCE are going to be looking for people with HUGE BO potential overseas. Sorry... That aint Tom Hardy. That sounds a lot more like Smith. Even if Smith passes, going for a name like him says a lot about WB's all in mentality about it's DC properties, I think.
