for those that don't know, Hippolyta kept Diana's divine heritage a secret by telling her that she was molded from clay

Which, honestly, works better for me.

I dont like it because it makes things complicated. WW gets raised thinking she's made of clay, the kids at school were calling her clay (Azzarello had her confess that), and so on.

What i mean is if you asked her about her origin she'll give the complicated answer "i am zeus' daughter but until recently i thought i was made from clay which was because blah, blah". Just get it over with and say she is his daughter from the start.

It just feels that Azz wanted to keep the classic origin in some capacity so that he wouldnt piss off the fans too much.

And what if Azzarello's story hasnt happened yet and they want to do it later with WW dealing with Hera's wrath and so on? The answer she would give would be the clay one.

In a world filled with superhumans, i dont think Hera would instantly suspect Zeus when one more child is born with superpowers. So the Amazons could know her true origin and of course stay quiet about it until somehow one day Hera finds out the truth.

So if I'm correct Wonder Woman's origin story is essentially that she was a baby sculpted from clay by Hippolyta (who was the daughter of the Greek god Ares) over 2 thousand years ago? So she's thousands of years old? And she was endowed with certain traits and abilities by 6 gods from the Greek Pantheon.
I'm curious to see how they'd portray something like that. The whole 'made from clay' thing could easily be interpreted metaphorically. Say she was created through a more complicated process, but still not the result of a regular birth and conception. How they choose to depict the Greek gods will have a big impact on the origin. Introducing them in a clever way is important not just for Wonder Woman, but for the larger DC universe.
If the Greek gods were depicted as a more technologically advanced race like the Kryptonians, then Wonder Woman could be a person they genetically designed to have a combination of specific strengths. The 6 gods could have made her in a lab using Hippolytas DNA or something.

No. Traditionally, she's the only Amazon that isn't thousands of years old. You should watch the Wonder Woman animated movie. The clay origin is handled beautifully there.

You know, killing the sailors aside, i like that Azzarello's Amazons refresh their numbers every few decades by mating with sailors passing by their island. It keeps the society fresh. I never liked that everyone of them was a veteran except Diana, who was raised as the only child in a society of 2000 year old women. I feel sorry for her.

They exist on Olympus, which i guess is a different realm.

Their importance to the world:
The DCU has many pantheons that exist simultaneously. WW being based on greek mythology mostly deals with the Olympians. Others deal with the Indian gods, and so on.

Their power:
They are manifestations of ideas, much like the New Gods are, if not more.

Characterisation:
Until recently they were played very straight up. Athena is the goddess of wisdom, ergo good, Ares is the god of war, therefore bad. Hermes is the messanger, so he's harmless, and so on. But the truth is that the Greeks saw their gods as capricious and multifaceted beings and themselves at their mercy. Athena was the goddess of wisdom and strategy, sure, but dont say you can weave better than her or she'll turn you into a spider (Arachne). Or dont get raped in her temples (it's your fault, obviously), or she'll turn you into Medusa. Furthermore, Hades, despite being the ruler of the underworld, was a fairly nice guy in comparison to the others. He didnt want to rule the underworld but it's what his brothers left him so he became a ruler - bureaucrat for the dead souls.

Only Azzarello seems to have grasped this concept and his gods are closer to the way they were in Greek mythology. The designs are also very fresh and interesting too.

I'm specifically referring to the transition from act two to three. Batman Begins in particular, most people faulted the switch to the doomsday plot. It's where the story went downhill.

Agreed, it would be a cool explanation for all those sailor stories about beautiful women appearingt to them and then being gone next morning. Doesn't have to lead to them being slaughtered. (I guess that was Azzarello trying to make the Amazons more like their mythological counterparts)

Though I do like the idea of the Amazons giving away their male children. There should be a bit of a fly in the balm of the Amazonian Utopia so to speak.

I've read up to issue 23 and yes her new 52 run is awesome so far. I love all the little additions like God mode, and her gauntlets being an armory.

I just read the last issue of the run. They left some things open and there are some nice surprises. I really liked this story. I'm really going to miss Azzarello and Chiang. They added so much to her mythos.
