Strangely enough, I am straight, and am pulling for Gal to do a good job (as opposed to those that have made their minds up that she's going to be terrible for some reason), and can admit that she's a stunningly good looking woman... But she just does nothing for me at all.

She's to you what Ryan Gosling is to me.

That's not strange. Either someone does it for you or they don't.

I don't know why but for some reason this made me laugh. Though I guess there are lots of gay men (and hetero women) that probably look on Gosling as incredibly idealized in terms of looks. Like ISS posted though, people either do it for you or they don't... Which is different from saying they are somehow objectively not hot or something, which is what goes on far too often in forums. I know that Gal by any measure is an incredible beauty. But for myself she's just not doing anything for my boy parts.

Me neither, though I don't think the first thing you should be thinking of when you look at WW should be...'I wanna tap that'. I think that kind of thing has prevented the character from being taken seriously in the past.

I feel this way about the dragon lady on Game of Thrones.

Maybe her cloak has the bird theme from Azzarello's take.

Well, the man in the panel is Zeus, right? (it's been a while since I've read Azzarello's run)

Eagle is often tied to Zeus in Hellenic mythology so I guess that the eagle crest and feather-like cloak have something to do with him, whether as a symbol of Themyscira, since he is a central deity of their society or with Diana herself, as she is Zeus' daughter.

Yeah, same here. And I am actually glad because of this. Wonder Woman is a character I never wanted to view that way, so I am glad there won't be "distractions" of the kind. Now, Catwoman on the other hand... :woot:

Wonder Woman uses eagle as a symbol way before that. I really hope it doesn't have anything to do with Zeus. And I like the Zeus origin, but I don't like it being central. Not to mention Diana shouldn't know.

I know she does. But given that cinematic universe won't have a 70+ years of history like comics, they can do whatever they want with it.

And I am willing to bet they'll address the eagle crest in some way, if nothing but showing it as "Aetos Dios" on official flag of Themyscira.

It would make more sense that Themyscira having Athena or Artemis as their patron god.

Yeah, I think so too.

On the other hand, Themyscira being an all-female society would probably prefer to have a female god as a tutelary deity.
One does not exclude the other though, they could still recognize Zeus as a central deity, but have Athena, Artemis or even Hera as their guardian and one they devote most temples and festivals to.

it will depend on the origin for the amazons and island really. If they are man haters then I don't see them worshipping Zeus.
If they are like his immortal warriors (think greek Valkries) I could see them worshipping him.

Indeed.

And I am most curious to see how they'll tackle the all-female part. Will they be immortal female warriors or will it be like in Azzarello's run, them seducing sailors and then keeping only female children (which, I must admit, I was not entirely fond of) or they'll come up with something else entirely?

I had thought a lot about it it never made sense to me having this group of hardened warriors on an island. If you are putting them on an island no one can get to there's no real need to be trained warriors.
I came up with an idea that Paradise Island was a prison or a vault and that the amazons were the guards....like the island was the entrance to Tartarus and if anyone tried to get out...they'd have to fight a legion of well trained amazons.
So if someone breaks out...like Ares or Hades and escapes to Man's World then we have a greater reason for Diana to leave Man's World. Bringing Trevor back is not a strong reason for a movie...averting Armageddon by greek god is.

Why wouldn't Diana know Zeus' symbol is an eagle?

She shouldn't know Zeus is her father just yet.

This is exactly what they do since 1987. Including in The New 52, established in SM/WW.

Really?
Goddammmit...the story of my career...a day late and a dollar short

I like this idea a lot!

You are most definitely right about it making no sense and this not just makes perfect sense, but would also make a great basis for some stories in vein of "Clash of Titans". And your idea about Ares escaping actually reminds me of "Wonder Woman" animated film.

There still remains one problem I have with Amazons being an immortal all-female society, though. They have to procreate. Other way, if you have a limited and unchanging number of warriors that are supposed to fight and die in battle, sooner or later they're going to become extinct.
Actually, returning to aforementioned "Wonder Woman" animated film, it is the exact thought I had in mind when watching the final battle and so many Amazons falling in it - a genocide of Amazon nation.

You could explain it away as such:
As long as they are on the island..if they die they will resurrect the next day at dawn. This could be why they choose their greatest champion to go out into man's world and give her several magical items

She shouldn't know Zeus is her father just yet.

She doesn't have to. I just mentioned that as one of two possibilities, the other one being - Zeus being Themyscirian central and/or tutelary deity.

Even if it is part of her armor as her being Zeus' daughter, she doesn't have to know that. Armor would be given to her by Hippolyta and she is bound to know (unless she was very drunk that night :woot:).

well the armor and title of Wonder Woman is the Amazons' champion...it's not her personal armor (if they go by the comics)

Hmm... I could see that work.

Though that would mean training a hardened warriors for battle, without them learning to embrace death that comes as an outcome. I must admit that I am not very fond of that, because embracing death in battle was a very prominent teaching in every militaristic society in history and I'd like to see that here too.

Indeed. That's what I was going for with this. It could be an armor given to Hippolyta by Zeus himself for example.
