The last scene with Magneto in Golden Gate park was actually filmed in London. It was originally meant to have Mystique sitting across from him, to imply that she had been on his side throughout the whole movie. Rebecca Romijn, however, was unavailable due to a television series she was filming at the time.

Found on the IMDB trivia section. I dont really know what to think about this. I suppose it would put a few questions into peoples minds like 'How did Mystique escape from the Government?'. Plus the fact that the bastard just left her after she was cured.

In the movie was Mystique behind the whole Multiple Man camp invasion scene?

What are your thoughts?

My thoughts are that Mystique sold Magneto out, but he was just 1 step ahead...

For Mystique to be on his side would be totally dumb considering how he betrayed her. Why would she want to help him out when he totally abandoned her?

I guess were just lucky itwasn't in the movie. Some people just have wierd directing/writing styles  .

Especially because the whole theme of abandonment was something that writer Zak Penn specifically wanted to showcase re: why the Brotherhood always fails and why the X-Men always wins...the themes of family, committment and loyalty, etc etc.

That scene would totally put a screw on those notions.

I would have loved for Mystique to be in the final scene. I thought it was highly suspicious and convenient for MM to be there waiting for the army to show up at that exact moment...from his cocky/don't give a s*** attitude we saw in the truck...he would not have stayed there for more than a day waiting on the soldiers to show up...that just isn't his character. Plus...what did Magneto offer his as an incentive to stay at the camp site for 4 days...nothing. I wish Mystique would have smiled at Erik and her eyes turn yellow as he moved the metal chess piece. But it is in comic Mystique's nature to get back at someone who betrayed her...but movie Mystique IMO loved Magneto with all her heart.

Yes, it's true. If anyone would listen to the damn commentary with the producers, they'd know.

"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned."

That wouldn't have made sense. Magneto betrayed her totally.

yeah and it highlights the fact that he turned against charles and mystique now he has no friends left

Absolutely. Having her turn up at the end to play chess would have been stupid, and one twist too far. Thank God she was unavailable to film it. Why did the writers and director seem determined to undo the drama they had previously created?

I can just about accept the Magneto chess scene as a final, thought-provoking twist. That's about it.

Unless she would be planning to give him his comeuppance.

Just to play devil's advocate here, Does forgiveness not exist in X-Men movieverse?

I think if I remember correctly there was some discussion to have Mystique, depowered and a regular human being, show up at Erik's side with a gun, however I am not 100% sure. It might have been in an interview.

Indeed it does. Angel forgave his father and his father forgave him. And maybe there was some forgiveness too in Iceman accepting Rogue's non-mutancy.

But creating dramatic events only to undo them all is dangerous ground on which to tread. It can cheapen the emotion and make the viewer stop believing and stop buying into the story.

The horror of Xavier's death was undone in the final scene, the drama of Magneto being cured was undone in the chess scene... to undo the shock of seeing Magneto abandon his long-time associate/companion (and Mystique's revenge) might have been a step too far, too soap-opera-ish.

I agree completely...I was just throwing things around, trying to rile things up a bit ;)

That's why you don't add in that ridiculous scene of Xavier having survived Jean's wrarth.

a lot of the movie's characters were out of their persona/character.

Does any of it really make any sense? really?

Uh, we didn't see that. All we saw was Angel and his dad flying off. That's it. Nothing about forgiving anyone.

but, I suppose, that implies that angel forgave him. Why else would he do all that and save him?

This movie "implies" WAY more often than it should.

But it makes you think, which is a good thing i think

Who knows if she was even cured? Can't Mystique block harmful toxins from her body? If she was aware the cure was coming... is it plausible to say that she faked her de-mutantizing? I mean, if that's the case... it makes total sense that she'd be on Magneto's side the whole time.

Another interesting alternate ending that the producers discussed was the ending scene where Rogue and Bobby kissed. After they did so, the camera pans out of the window to reveal Leech sitting beneath it playing a video game or something. Very interesting.
