Had a feeling it would be a race discussion and humans will never learn.
I have no issues at all with an African American Annie or any other race portraying any of the predominantly white characters. I believe ages ago Nell Carter played Miss Hannigan quite legendarily. I just have an issue with "updating" Annie to modern times and making it urbanized.
It's a valid criticism, but it is not unheard of in musical theatre. It's quite commonly done in opera and Shakespeare as well.
I will say, I am surprised there isn't more controversy about it, never mind the urbanization of it, I'd think just the idea of mistreated orphans in a modern day setting, wouldn't really translate wellI have no issues at all with an African American Annie or any other race portraying any of the predominantly white characters. I noticed they had a few of the kids from the movie in the parade.What PC lyric change did they make to "Hard knock life"? I couldn't make it out,but obviously they changed the line "No one cares for you a smidge,when you're in an orphanage". Can't malign orphanages these days.![]()
