Digital stunt-doubles are always useful, and I've no doubt that may come into play for Joker as it did for Batman in BB; but I also think they can't do that until they know what the Joker's going to look like, and it's a foregone conclusion that one reason for scanning Ledger would be to work on makeup concepts.

As others have I said I doubt it'll be heavy prosthetics but i wouldn't be surprised if they modified his nose and chin to elongate his features some (without going apenuts, of course).

It's possible that some CGI would be used to augment his features in some instances but since Nolan doesn't like to use a lot of CGI I would doubt that they would use it much for Joker's appearance. However it would be interesting, when he smiles (which would not be all the time) if the smile was subtly CG-enhanced to make it larger...

Absolutley unnecesary imo. I think they might give him a prosthetic nose(i would anyway), but nothing major. I want Joker to still look like a real person and not some fantasy villain from Cats.

Make-up tests, prosthetics. Where CGI might be necessary. I don't know if they're planning to do a mold of Ledger's face or just use the scan.

If Ledger were busy, he might not have time to sit down all day for a face casting. A quick Cyberscan (yes, that's a brand name) would be faster. You could then take the digital data and do a CNC-milled version of his face, and practice prosthetic designs on that until he's ready for a final casting. (This would also make it easier to modify a bit if he were still losing weight up until shooting.)

Finally, they might've scanned his face for hallucination sequences requiring a CG Joker -- or even for a Dark Knight video game character.

They did that for Jim Carrey in The Grinch, and that didn't look too bad. But Heath's smile in that current pic of him is more than enough for me.

Ummm, but any rational person is not gonna CGI HIS SMILE ON. Not even enhance it, that's just stupid. So everytime he smiles you CGI it to make it look better? Ledge has a big grin as it is, giving him a massive grin is unnecesary, even if he does have a dispropotionate smile in the books. This is a film.

The CGI superboy, i mean man, looked really really dumb. When he lands on that big rock you can see its a computer image and ruins the films, and Singers, credibility. Just because he didn't think to have Routh actually land on the rock and then speed it up on camera.

In his first appearance, Joker had a fairly normal face until he smiled. When he smiled - which was not something that happened often - it would be this big, strange-looking smile. The idea being that he was disfigured in the accident that created him, I would think. (The smile was EXACTLY Conrad Veidt's prosthetic grin from "The Man Who Laughs.")

So the idea was that Joker might look like just a guy, until he smiled, and then... it was grotesque. It only featured like once in the book.

I was thinking it might be that way with Ledger's Joker.

I'm also not talking about CG'ing his jaw into Venomesque proportions. I'm saying a very small percentage enlargement. Not enough to be obviously fake, just enough to make you look twice. I think it'd be cool, anyway.

that's a really great idea. it would be wonderful to see this concept realized on film.

It doesn't necessarily mean prosthetics. Very well could be that they just want to make some mock-ups of Joker ideas.

He never read the comic books but he 'instantly had an idea' on how to play Joker? I still think casting Ledger is a great decsion, but this makes me kinda wary....

It's good to see that they are going down the right path for the Joker, the Killing Joke. And it's good that even though Ledger isn't a fan of the comics, he was able to easily understand how the Joker is supposed to be.

Pretty interesting. he quotes TKJ as a source for Joker´s background, which is good, but also imply the movie won´t get too detailed about the character´s history, which is good too.
