Quantumania Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Roxy's maaaaybe a little high review:

John Rocha had apprehensions before seeing the movie but he ended up liking it a lot. Seems like most of the ex-Collider folk have liked it.

Peyton Reed is a hack. He got lucky Marvel had Edgar Wright’s storyboards for the first movie.
What about Taika Waititi delivering a miles worse second attempt at Thor? Or Chloe Zhao that brought to us by far the worst reviewed MCU film? I think it mostly has to do with Feige and Disney releasing two and three times the Marvel content as before. That along with a lack of proper planning for a bigger story narrative and the fact that they don't pay the vfx guys their due that results to hideous visuals. I think they got too comfortable with their success and their formulas and barely try anymore.

You/we don't even know what the plan is.

Taika Waititi literally got free reign with Love & Thunder. Wrote and directed.

Your last two sentences are dead on accurate as to what the problem seems to be.

the Russo Brothers and Markus and McFeely need to be brought back. They should at least give them the X-Men reboot. If Joss Whedon wasn't scandal plagued he would be a great contender to bring back as well.

That's the problem. It was clear to the audience in the first three phases what the Infinity saga was leading to. Phase 4 movies felt almost completely disconnected. Obviously they have plans for something and Feige said they'll be more apparent in Phase 5. But not being clear for the viewers is part of the quality problem for critics and audience. That was my point.

I have plenty of reservations when I hear about free reigns in a Disney project. I'm sure Waititi brought more of his signature than other directors but there is always a limit to what one can offer creatively there. Almost all their films feeling quite similar pretty much attests to that.

It's pretty clear (to me) that the issue is the MCU went from a unique boutique experience to a corporate bubblegum factory.

I was very worried about the aggressive rate at which they were unspooling content because let's face it Kevin Feige is but one man and he couldn't possibly keep the same quality control. You can also see Disney's fingerprints all over the direction of the MCU because all they care about is #1 pumping out content to line the Disney+ catalogue and #2 if I'm being very transparent - creative decisions/mandates very much related to the culture war.

I still don't understand why they chose Antman of all sub-franchises to break Kang into the movie side. I don't have much hope in general for the MCU anymore and it saddens me.

Hiring people who’s experience are a few episodes of Rick and Morty and Jimmy Kimmel Live to write stuff with important introductions and big stakes and emotion is probably the main problem

Russos only had done a few episodes of Community and directed You, Me, and Dupree. It’s not completely a bad choice.

In retrospect, maybe Payton Reed should've just been content for these movies to be a "pallet cleanser" because it doesn't seem like his grand ambitions for this movie are paying off at the moment.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure Marvel screwed over their VFX artists when they were making good movies as well. Its been a chronic problem in Hollywood for far longer than just the last 2 years.

he wrote a fan-loved run on Nova in the comics, it had heart and critics liked it too

he's not just some dude off the street, although feige should use this and the last year or so as feedback to dial it back and focus on quality control

At least they had the good sense to keep him away from Fantastic Four.

…and then they do something like Eternals and people didn’t like that, too.
Probably because they spend so much time doing the same thing over and over again that they don't know how to do something else in an engaging way that works.

I'm bummed out by the bad reviews, but I'm confident I'll still like it. Love and Thunder got mostly trashed, and it's one of my favorites. Still excited to see this on Friday!

A for effort but the pacing in Eternals was horrible and the two leads had zero chemistry together

100% this. There is nothing wrong with staying in your lane if that’s what people enjoy.

It’s a bit too early to tell. Yes, obviously this isn’t resonating with a lot of critics but the movie still hasn’t been released in a majority of countries yet. So we need to see whether or not audiences fall with the critics and how the box office turns out. There’s been movies where there is a divide between critics and causal audiences or just fans. Critics can pan the movie but general moviegoers could love it, and vice versa. Ant-Man 3 could be one of those movies where audiences and fans embrace, and not critics it not. So I’m eager to see what this film’s Cinemascore is and how leggy it is. I’m predicting this to get another ‘A’ but this could lean towards a B+ or so, which isn’t great for a major four quadrant blockbuster like this. I can definitely see this going either way.

They've got too much on their plate with all the D+ shows, and it's showing. There's still multiple unanswered questions from the very beginning of Phase 4.. It's been 2 years, and we still have no idea where White Vision is, and we still don't know who Sharon was talking to at the end of Winter Falcon. I'm assuming Sharon's shenanigans will be revealed in Thunderbolts, but that's not even guaranteed. And obviously White Vision will be in the new Vision Quest show, but that could be another 3 years out... 5+ years to follow-up a question from a tv show is ridiculous.

Also, I think Loki season 2 should've been released prior to Quantumania, to build up more hype for Kang. But that's just me.

That Collider era nearly killed my love for the genre so their opinion, whether positive or negative, doesn't mean a whole lot for me.

I do find it interesting that the non niche outlets such as the Guardian have gone easy on the film, while the niche ones seem to be going for the jugular.

In the grand scheme of things this was a film I was looking forward to, that isn't going to change regardless of reviews.
