Anyone afraid POTC 2 might break any Spidey Records?

i know, not only does he have star power, but hes a really great actor. i mean its tough to think of a role depp wouldnt screw up, or at least a role he wouldnt make entertaining.

POTC2 was good, but not nearly as good as the first and I think now that the hype is dying down people are realizing that. This usually leads to a backlash within 6 months. Nevermind if the second was still a decent action summer flick, the fact it did not measure up will lead to people exclaiming in December once the thing is on DVD and they've bought it "Man this thing sucks. I'm going to go on the internet and tell everybody."

While stupid and juvinle, I think this will lead to a smaller 3 day opening for the third (overall 4 days will be bigger as it is Memorial Day weekend) while SM3 has a second film that most people preferred. Sure it didn't open as big, but it opened on a Wed. and some waited til DVD after the first disappointed them and the third is going to be marketed as darker (which does sell in franchises now) and will have Venom, who to anyone who has grown up since the late '80s is the Joker equivalent (however so unfairly so, as GG is such a richer and bigger villain in the Spidey mythos as is Doc Ock and GG2 but whatever).

So my guess is that if either will break POTC2's record it will only be SM3, which has fewer competition, only 3 days, better hype coming off the second film and a villain that fanboys are creaming themselves to see. However, I think there is a VERY GOOD CHANCE neither will break POTC2's record but merely claim second and third slots in opening weekends under it then.

No. It's probably because you were absolutely positively convinced that POTC 2 was being "overestimated" as well. "It's too long", "It will only make $90-100 million OW". Yatta yatta.

Spidey 3's already carrying massive buzz throughout the industry (there was an article that mentioned the film's hype within Wall Street), and we've still got 9 months until its release. I'd hold off on the "overestimating" thing, if I were you.

I'd answer no, but if it really makes $140m opening, it can get to $420m in total.

So it means that it will hurt Shrek 3 and POTC3. But also it means that POTC3 won't make more than $330m, because most people will go to see Spidey 3.

And again, POTC3 has Memorial Day, so I doubt there can be 2 movies in one month, which will both make more than $115m.

I was suprised at how much POTC2 made, and i really wonder waht's in store next year. POTC2 set teh bar high but with SM3 coming out after POTC3, i think it'll set the bar higher.
