Are Studios Committing Movie Suicide?

Feel free.. if you can point me to effect driven films with entire characters that are CGI for budgets of less than 30 million that turned out to be some of the best films of the year that I don't already know about, I'd be happy to see them.
you mean dirty aliens that are tracked with a shaky camera?every CGI fan knows that this is easy to render for a small amount money.

they did a fantastic job. but if the same director and the CGI company was doing Tron they woudl spend the same amount money.maybe even more because Imagine Engine IMO doesnt have all the custom software for so complex enviorments and vehicles.

what happens is when people get lazy they use it as a crutch, and that is slowly starting to happen

im fine with 3D for kids movies, the crumbsnatchers love that stuff but there should be a bit more discretion with other films

I think it's more about boosting grosses than laziness. If anything, there is more work into 3D. They're just not doing it right.

Geez, in a way, Cameron's plan kind of backfired last year. We all hailed the IMAX 3D, but instead of his intentions of wanting to advance the tehnology of films, we're just going backwards in a cheap way. It's not artistic like his intention was.

I guess I'm not enough of a CGI fan then :whatever:. Get the stick out of your ass. There's plenty of scenes near the end where two main characters are on the screen for plenty of time and there's no shaky cam. Besides this is exactly my point, they used what money they had to make a film that looked fantasitc, using the limitations to their advantage.

I was also thinking Moon, which featured plenty of visual effects and tricks and cost about 5 million.

Oh, and I'm still waiting for your list of cheaper better films.

Piranha 3D anyone? I love the movie, but to go from Avatar to 3D boobies and penis eating

not exactly a bold step forward

All the remakes, reboots, prequel and sequels are killing the movie industry.
There is no creativity in Hollywood.

For example, why the hell would Hollywood remake a movie that's only 3 years old (Dead at the Funeral)?

we've been doing that with British films (and TV) for quite some time

the trend started because it was/can be succesful and its just plain easier to do a sequel or a remake because it's what the GA is comfortable with

just my opinion of why

I think its also a reflection of a risk averse climate, the economy is in the crapper so studios and production companies are very skittish....when the economy was doing well (mid to late nineties) it saw an explosion of the indie movie genre that had been struggling for some time

3D will fall out of fashion soon enough, I do think things are getting a bit out of hand

I don't think that 3d will go out of fashion. But i do think that studios wil release less 3d movies. 2010 has been a wake up call for hollywood because you literally saw the rise and fall of 3d. Studios are currently reevaluating whether they wanna go 3d for their movies.
I think with several high profile movies like TF3 , Hobbit , Spider-man 4 etc being shot in native 3d , studios heads are releasing that delivering a high quality product will get butts in seats.
Although conversions were seriously considered in 2010 , time has proven that the worst 3d movies of 2010 were the converted flicks.
