Are there any banned Members that you kind of miss? - Part 2

Another day, another banned poster whose existence I was entirely unaware of.

That's a shame, and surprising. I have been on the other side of a debate from him dozens of times, and he always seemed to keep his cool.

As trite it may sound, this is why I have little to no hope for America or the average American doing anything to fight against the NSA/FBI/CIA spying and the clamping down of civil rights.

HYPE is a microcosm; when you give a little bit of power and control to people who, generally speaking, have none in their daily lives, they use that power. WHatever Mankind dreams up and creates, it will use.

So, when the frustrations of the day accumulate, the little MODS and ADMINS suspend decency and common sense, instead replacing it with iron fisted (hah! I think I may have infringed on a Marvel property with that one!) rule. "This is a dictatorship" - as has been said by Mods.

If anyone thinks this is restricted to the cyber realm, I urge you to read history books. Facts are, should the trend in the USA continue, those entrusted with the data and the ability to censor on a macro level will act the same as the small MODS and ADMINS in bulletin board forums such as this.

Some mods are good, some are petty and immature. It's like anything else. I don't know how mods get chosen, but perhaps the selection process here should be improved.

If it is any comfort to you, Heliflyer, my experience of being a mod (at another site) was a weekend's negligence followed by a resignation once I saw the contents of my PM box. As with traffic wardens, the problem is probably with the type of person that really wants the job.

Wow! I may need to come back later and ban you both to lift my self esteem. :(

Heh. You will notice that I strategically resisted naming names.

The thing is reg that you might name one mod you feel is petty and vindictive and other posters may like that mod, it usually is defendant on personal interactions, you'll find very few that are unanimously loved or hated.

The thing with modding here is that people only see it as a role where you ban people, but there is a whole other side where you can actually help posters, you just don't hear about that because no one makes a thread to talk about how a mod helped them, only how one wronged them.

You would be amazed how many times we get met with rude and aggressive responses from people breaking rules that are in the FAQ and they have been busted for breaking before, yet they are indignant, the rules should not apply to them, we have to deal with all of that in-between getting our supposed power trips.

Hey regwec, I truly appreciate the mature tone and words on your part! Sincerely! It is nice to find someone who "gets it" and communicates the way adults should, not do!

It's fair of me to say that the whole notion of a "dictator" of any sort, benevolent or otherwise not only censors wantonly, but does so with glee and almost a braggard's tone. It is actually a bit chilling, especially when you consider this is supposed to be a fun site, and one where we talk about HEROES. In my book, no hero ever tries to stifle discourse or communication/speech, so the irony here is a bit deep.

To the MODS and ADMINS, this is not a passive-aggresive dig at you, merely talk that is put forth to improve, not force dictatorial shenanigans. Egos need to be placed into check, myself included. I have seen the "arc" of Internet forums/BBs etc, and I know I have been guilty of inflammatory nonsense but I am actually trying to be better than that.

With all the **** happening in the world, if I don't try and act better and put forth something more fun or ethical, I have no leg to stand on. So, while I slip at times, I am trying. I suggest and ask you do the same.

I think the feedback thread should come back for these problems. There used to be a suggestions and feedback thread, and it went pretty well with many people being pretty laidback and there was a clear public line of communication. I think it would be a great idea for that to come back as it users can bring up issues with any situation in a constructive manner without looking like they're attacking anyone.

To be honest this is one of the few forums on the internet that feels properly moderated.

As someone who's seen into the washroom and saw what was said behind closed doors, in the end I stopped caring a long time ago. I just post here for the handful of threads that interest me. No matter how much you want things to change, they aren't going to and the policy here is a consensus of how it should be run and if you don't like it leave.

That is actually being discussed... :yay:

Problem were those that decided to make it a *****fest rather than constructive dialogue.

We'll see what happens.

I think that's precisely right. But then, you may ask why somebody wants what seems to be a thankless task. Some people accept the job because they enjoy their time here and want to do their bit for peace and harmony. Others probably choose it so that they don't have to lose arguments anymore. This isn't an attack on any individual, but a reflection on the way all positions of relative "authority" are filled.

What I do think is unreasonable is the instance where a mod indulges in an argument in a belligerent and snide tone, knowing that their "status" prevents the other poster(s) involved responding tit-for-tat.

yeah I have no real issues with the moderation here. You want a dictatorship, the worst one I've seen is rpg.net. That place is full of tiny little people abusing what small amounts of authority they have.
