I've noticed that Perlman gets very little credit after spending two years working on the GOTG story. I feel that we are definitely going to see how big an influence she had on the first movies success. I really hate how they've seemed to cut her out of the success of the movie and yet she remains gracious.

Isn't the final movie substantially different from what she originally envisioned? I thought James Gunn made significant changes.

Even in the kerfluffle about her supposedly being shafted, Perlman still felt the need to clarify that the final script was substantially rewritten from her draft. I think she said pretty much all the humor (her take was more serious) and the stuff about Peter and the musical connection to his mother came from Gunn.

So not to dismiss her accomplishments (I'm excited to see her Gamora comic series!) but I'm not sure how much of the movie was her doing anyway.

IIRC, Perlman also had Quill's dad being J'Son, and was going to have at least one scene on Spartax.

Yeah, she got the ball rolling and should get credit for that, but her role has been overstated as well (through no fault of her own, she's tried to set the record straight whenever she was asked). I have no expectations that she'll be involved in this.

She got credited appropriately for her work, she even had articles written about her by Time and Forbes just before the movie was released. Marvel.com also had a interview published about her involvement in the movie a week or two after the movie released.

The main thing though is that she wrote the basic plot of the movie, but James Gunn made significant changes to her script to the point, that it became something very different than what she put on paper. Most if not all of the things most people enjoyed, like the comedy, the walkman, the and the emotional beats, were because Gunn added it in. James Gunn obviously has a strong creative vision for the GotG and was passionate enough about it that he was already thinking about where he wanted to go with them in sequels. I think GotG2 will be just fine.

This almost like asking about Penn's involvement in an Avengers sequel so no, not nervous.

She provided the framework, but being as Gunn is still on I think we are in good hands.
Still I am picking up Gamera series to see if she is actually a good writer.
That cover is glorious.

Man, it really sounds like all of the things I disliked about the movie came from Gunn. I'd be curious to see that first draft and just how different it was.

Now I'm almost certain I'll like this film even less than the first one. Uh-oh.

Person wrote a Macgiffin plot. The entire emotional hook of the film, the jokes and the music choices all came from people still involved with the film.

No she's busy working on Captain Marvel. That'll be the real measuring stick

The last trailer was so on point it's ridiculous. Not worried in the slightest.

Well as some people in this thread have already said, she's the screen-writer who wrote the first draft of GotG, and she's now currently working - along with Meg LeFauve - on Captain Marvel.

EDIT: First two drafts, actually.

I doubt Gunn rewrote the script because it was bad, he likely did because it wasn't... "Gunn" enough for his liking. :hehe:

I'm nervous. But I'm always nervous when creative teams change. I don't remember her being credited in the film though. If her input was substantial, means she was a significant part of what made GotG what it was.

I'm not really nervous because Perlman is gone. Writers and creative teams change for a lot of these movies.

I'm more nervous because it's always tough with sequels and finding that right balance in making a story that still both feels fresh but doesn't betray the spirit of the original.

Obviously, the work Perlman did got Guardians of the Galaxy off the ground, and that's very important. And her career seems to be doing quite well right now. She's working on Captain Marvel. So it's not like Marvel completely forgot about her and threw her aside. I feel like her contributions are recognized.

Honestly, I wish there was a way to read the earlier drafts of these movies. I wish I could've read Zak Penn's Avenger script, and the Nicole Perlman draft of Guardians just to see how different they were.
