Movie Grimlock would be so simple to explain anyway. Just have one particular protoform Autobot crash-land in a special-effects warehouse, damage his brain circuits a little bit, and happen to scan a giant electronic t-rex movie prop as the first item he emulates as his alt form.

All that would be needed afterward would be a brief follow-up scene in the final battle sequence and everyone would be happy.
