Assassin´s Creed III

Eh, I would have preferred a Feudal Japan [Ninjas/Samurais] or Ancient Egypt setting/assassin.

The Civil War setting/assassin... not so much. Oh well.

except italian renaissance was something new. american revolution gets so much media exposure

Really?
Where, exactly?
I'll go ahead and give you the first one with Mel Gibson's The Patriot. Now feel free to provide us with more examples.

And allow me to add my over-the-top excitement for the direction of ACIII, and to say that I already called it many moons ago. The American and French Revolutions are tailor-made for the Templar-Assassin conflict; and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see AC3 get some "Brotherhood" and "Revelations" type spinoffs that carry the AC3 story a few years along and overseas to France.

I also agree with Wolvie that this isn't likely to take a cut-and-dried "America good, Britain bad" approach....hell, the entire franchise has always kept us on our toes finding out that our allies are traitors, and our enemies often become our closest friends. There's probably going to be a ton of Freemasonry lore here, with the Masons being absolutely obvious Templars.

Also, keep in mind that Native Americans played both sides of the field during the Revolutionary War --- some fought with the Americans, some fought against them. Those snowy mountains in the background tend to point towards upstate New York or Pennsylvania as a possible setting, making our new assassin likely of Iroquois descent; but I'm holding out hope that it could equally point towards the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Carolinas, Virginia and Georgia, indicating the assassin is one of my namesake Cherokee.....(good god, I'd die a happy man) :word:

That's exactly what I'm thinking. You almost never hear anything about the Revolution here, and you'd figure that that would be the most important time in our history.

I'm confused because I don't even think I've ever seen a video game focused on that period at all, which is why this game is even more exciting, because its doing something new and different.

Just war and strategy games really. Not sure where all this 'overexposure' is coming from.

Civil War = 1861-1865. Rebels vs. Yankees.
Revolutionary War = 1776-1781. Americans vs. Redcoat Brits.

This game is set in the Revolutionary War, not the Civil War.

Here's a quick history lesson for those unfamiliar with the American Revolution:

don't stand up in a crowded rowboat....frickin' moron. He must be from Virginia

Exactly. There's a lot of games based on war. Heck, Call of Duty has one every year, but those have been set around WWII and now war in the Middle East and a fictional WWIII. You hardly ever see a war game set during or before the first World War.

Not to mention, AC has always centered around conspiracies and civil unrest, but hardly ever on any actual wars, even when the first one was set around the Crusades.

Empire: Total War is partially about the American Revolution. So yeah, totally overexposed.

you can't create an exciting shooter based in the revolutionary war since the guns are all basically one shot and then they'd drop them. I'm sure some people are worried about the move to a more gun orientated setting but at the end of the day the Revolutionary War was mainly fought with knives and bayonets.

Revolutionary War?! Now that IS something. Someone told me ACIII was tied to the Civil War about a day and a half ago. Thank god it was false. There's definitely massive potential in the 1770s.

As mentioned already, George Washington was a Freemason, and so were most of the founding fathers, especially Benjamin Franklin.

This is the symbol of the Freemasons:

Look familiar?

Also, Ben Franklin can maybe serve a similar role Da Vinci did for Ezio, since he's also a man of invention.

The very fact that the American Revolution keeps getting confused with the Civil War I think is proof that it's a great setting, because it is yet another time period where people aren't really that familiar with all the ins and outs. There's a lot of scope to play with existing political and social structures and to create their own AC universe fictional conspiracies within those.

@Cherokeesam, I think you're spot on about the Mason stuff, it'll either be Templar or perhaps a diff group altogether, something about the 'Ones Who Came Before' even, since there are all those theories about secret Mason temples etc

Either way, I think the Masons will feature and I really hope you're right about the Cherokee. And doesn't the idea of playing a Native American Indian Assassin just feel damn right?

Edit: Just saw that free mason logo. Okay, they're probably Assassins then.

Which makes me think this game (and any extensions with the same Assassin) will mark the end of the Assassins hiding in plain sight. Since we know they all end up hiding in regional installations and camps, I think this might be the big war between Templars and Assassins that the Templars ultimately win.

Freemasonry! :wow:

I wonder if the new Assassin will interact with anyone from The Founding Fathers as an ally and/or villain. :exp:

There was a banner on Game Informer's website but it was taken down of the new assassin being on the boat with George Washington so im going to assume he'll meet with many of the founding fathers. I wonder if he'll be involved with like the Boston Tea Party or anything. It's funny to think that right now we're fighting a war against terrorism but yet thats the very way our nation was founded, we were terrorists.

I'd bet on it.
That definitely appears to be Mr. One-Dollar Bill on the back of the box; and like others, I'd fully expect to see Ben Franklin play the Leonardo role this time around. And I'm sure we'll see plenty from the other Founding Fathers as well.

About the obvious similarities between the Freemason symbol and the Assassins': here's the thing.....in terms of actual philosophy, Freemasonry is actually a lot more akin to the Templars than the Assassins. So even though the *symbol* looks Assassin, what if the Freemason design actually indicates the Templars taking over the Assassins....? A sort of great-big "F.U." to the Assassins from the Templars....

That's the one that made me think you'd be buds with George W.

Unless he's distracting him before shanking him in the back :p

"Squirrel!"

Holy f**king s**t!!! That is wicked awesome. It'll be an interesting relationship (if one at all) considering Washington was a Freemason.

Yeah, one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. That's quite an intriguing underlying theme if the creators decided to run with it. Incidentally, I just finished watching the Wikileaks Special.

It'd be amazing if there was a mission to hunt down Benedict Arnold. How awesome would that be.

Which is what makes it so much more perfect.

I'll admit, I was never excited about an American Revolution setting, or even a French Revolution one. But seeing what they've shown so far and the potential surrounding it all, I'm more excited than ever for this.

I can totally see them doing that, except I don't think we'd be able to kill him without rewriting history with that one.

I feel bad for this character. He has a HELL of a lot to live up to, coming after 3 games of Ezio. I wonder how they'll make him a worthy successor.

Yeah, but there's a very specific difference between rebels/freedom-fighters and terrorists: in general, rebels/freedom-fighters hit military targets, while terrorists deliberately target civilians to create fear and panic. While there are instances of Americans being guilty of massacres against Loyalist civilians during the Revolution, those reports were sporadic and anecdotal. Full-blown warfare against the British army, and even guerrilla tactics against British supply lines and rearguards, hardly constitutes a "terrorist act."
