Are yall sure that the unlocking mini game has to be done on a phone? I watched a video showing the chest unlocking minigame before the game came out and it was on the tv screen not their phone.
There are two types of chests/gear that has to be unlocked via non traditional means. One type has to be unlocked through points earned through the "Iniative" system (something I'm still unclear on, all I know is that it involves signing up to Ubisoft's UPlay). The other type involves earning special points and completing missions from "Assassin Creed: Unity's Companion App". The game explicitly tells you to download and play this phone app in order to unlock content. The app is basically the "send assassins off to do missions" feature from previous games (plus your typical micro-transaction BS from other equally garbage freemium mobile games).

The video you watched could be from a phone mirrored to a TV, or before Ubisoft removed the feature from the game proper. Or it could be something else entirely (Some unpurchased gear can be "hacked", but I haven't tried that yet because Ubi's servers were buggy last night). In any case, yes, much of the chests and gear has to be unlocked via the mobile game only.

To be honest, now that I get that, it's a pretty cool idea. I was very confused as to what the whole Helix screen - mission select thing was all about, disliked it at first due to how weird and random it was. Now i think it's a great idea, reminds me a lot like the .Hack games for ps2.
Yeah that mission select screen confused me as well, but after a few spoilerish things happen they make it clearer.

I am sick of them wasting good characters and fantastic settings because they don't want to finish their game before release.

Same here. Both the American Revolution setting and the French Revolution setting had potential to be mind-blowing, and both Connor and Arno could have been as epic as Ezio. (I still like Connor, and haven't played with Arno yet, but they're clearly no Ezio or Edward).

I like Arno fine so far. He's very much inspired by Ezio, including his "revenge" angle. The thing that I'm tired of is how every single game (minus AC1) with a new character has you learning of and joining the Assassins not because the character believes in the Order, but because the Order is their quickest way for revenge/fortune. It's a lazy way to force you to upgrade stats and makes every game feel the same, story-wise. I'd love to have a game where the character is already an established Assassin who isn't having to start from scratch.

Well, damn, thats a crock of ****! Do they not realize that these kind of gimicks break immersion?

Also, it's REALLY bugging me that every character speaks with a BRITISH accent. I can accept a few characters like that (because hey, they might be from England), but every. single. one. speaks with your stereotypical British accent. Why? This is supposed to be France. I'd be really interested in hearing what Ubisoft's reasoning was.

how important are the app-locked chests to the gameplay?

Yeah, I hate it. I guess Ubisoft's reason for the Companion App is "you are a gamer, playing our game which is of a gamer playing a game! Go derper! Let's have our game's game tell the game's gamer that the game's game's gamer has to download another game to unlock stuff in the game's game!

I know it's called Assassins Creed, but I want a game where you can play from the Templars' side of the story.

Buy AC Rogue on the PS3 or 360. The main character is a Templar.

I have no clue what are in the app-locked chests (I only downloaded the app to see exactly what it is and have since deleted it), but a good chunk (I'd wager 30-40%) of the customizable options (weapons, colors, hoods, gloves, belts, pants, boots and tunics) are app-locked. And all the gear affects Arno's stats, so its not like you're simply missing out on a costume choice.

Also, you have to purchase many of the once-standard Assassin's Creed tricks like being able to hide by sitting on a bench, tossing money to distract guards, etc.

This is what Ubi said to PC users complaining about Unity's graphical glitches:

Ubisoft said:
"We are aware that the graphics performance of Assassin’s Creed Unity on PC may be adversely affected by certain AMD CPU and GPU configurations," Ubisoft said on their forum. "This should not affect the vast majority of PC players, but rest assured that AMD and Ubisoft are continuing to work together closely to resolve the issue, and will provide more information as soon as it is available."

Isn't the PS4 and XBOX One using an AMD CPU and GPU as well? Regardless, Ubi cant pass the buck here. The hardware isnt the issue. The game is the issue. They released a buggy unpolished game and now want to blame their screwups on other companies.

A lot of this reminds me of the Arkham Origins problems and criticisms.

It's seriously frustrating when simply descending a building leads to Arno cascading trough an endless ocean of blue polygons and having to restart.

I could maybe be ok with it if it was a new company/new game. But seriously? After Black Flags we get this?

yeah they should have push back a bit but there's always the complaints ad this is the result when they don't push back . but this the reason for those push back ad why they polish despite the complaints . hopefully if the have more the oe game beig done at the same time they will hold one back release it at a nother date and make sure that it's absolutely polished.

And screw those that complain about the push backs/delays . Their necessary if that dev studio's or publish is actually polishing the game. Better safe the sorry cause those people complain about push back's / delays go into hiding once this happens

Im still picking this up regardless of the bugs just because I think I can still enjoy it somewhat and a patch has to be on the way. But Im gonna play Rogue first. Hopefully by the time I get done with that game Unity will be more stable. Ubisoft cant let this happen again tho. If they dont have the ability to release a stable AC game on PS4 and Xbox One every year then they need to release them every 2 years. We the players will understand. We are spending our money on these games and we all would rather wait two years for a stable great game than one year for a broken rushed game. Am I right?

I will still probably get this around Black friday time. I have enjoyed all the AC games thus far. Issues and all

So far I like the game.. It's really big.. But holy **** it needs a patch.

Also that stupid companion app won't even link to my Xbox. Horse ****.

You most certainly are. It's would also let these games actually simmer and have true build-up, and actually be satisfying and rewarding, compared to the half-baked stuff we get every year.

Imagine how great AC3 would have been with another year to work on it. I'll never get over the wasted potential with that game, and now Unity. :cmad:

Also I fully intend to play Rogue.. But I'm waiting on the inevitable current gen version. I'm done with last gen.

Hoping to get my copy over the weekend. But that news about the app is ****, man.

You're totally right... However, Ubisoft simply lacks integrity. They need to take a page from Blizzard and not release a game until it is 100% finished. They know games make money tho and millions of people, myself included, will buy them.
