The Amazing Spider-Man Aunt May Casting Thread

Helen Mirren for Aunt May.
Richard Jenkins for Uncle Ben.

Helen Mirren for Aunt May! I do like whoever suggested Maggie Smith but she is very old and very sick. She is amazing but I just don't see her lasting another 9 years.

Plus she can't re-enact the Mrs Robinson seduction scene. :woot:

But in all seriousness, Maggie Smith does look more like the comic 616 Aunt May who was very old and frail, and if she doesn't last another 9 years, well at least she could've been in some of the Spider-Man movies. Besides, there might be a reboot by then (or a retcon of One More Day/ Brand New Day proportions in the movie).

I'm going with Vanessa Redgrave :)

Sigourney Weaver could be a Mrs Robinson type Aunt May. That would work.

If we're going for Mrs Robinson types, then how about Priscilla Presley? She's old enough to be a grandmother (and she is one). Or Jane Seymour, Morgan Fairchild or Anne Archer. These last three have been in the stage adaptation of The Graduate, as has Kathleen Turner and Linda Gray.

Vanessa Redgrave looks too similar to Rosemary Harris, although she could be good in her own right. I think I'd like something different if we're going for 616 May. Maybe someone thinner (especially in the face) and more frail looking.

Redgrave really looks the part. Plus she's a damn good actress.

Jane Lynch is an annoying actress and comes off as a bit butch and a bit of a b*tch. Butch and B*tch is not we need for Aunt May. We'll end up finding that maybe Uncle Ben faked his own death to get away from her and went off to start his own rice making business.

Meryl Streep?

She'd be way too hard to get for this film though.

So everyone is saying that Rosemary Harris was perfect... and yet looking like Rosemary Harris is now a down side?

Not that I think she looks much like her, other than that they are both elderly women with similar hair.

She's so wonderfully respect, and IMO is the best person for the role because she's not too commercialised like Mirren.

I'm someone who never thought Rosemary Harris was perfect for 616 Aunt May. She was good enough, though. Personally, I rather not have an Aunt May who seems old enough to be Peter's grandmother or great-grandmother. I never looked up Harris's age but she seemed 70-something from the get go. That's a bit too old, IMO. Late 50's/early 60's is ideal.

Sigourney Weaver. Then she can kick the s**t out of Venom.

I sense this Aunt May Robinson thingie becoming a fad around here.

Well Jonathan and Martha Kent were made much younger in Smallville. There's no reason why Uncle Ben and Aunt May can't also be younger. Uncles and Aunts don't have to be the age of one's grandparents, especially since Ben would've been around the age of Peter's father. Since Peter is in high school, that should really make them only in their 40s, not in their 60s or 70s, which is what 616 Aunt May always looks like. If Ben married a younger woman too, May could even be in her 30s or even her 20s. She could be the hot aunt that Peter's friends secretly fancy. With that in mind, even Signourney Weaver might be too old.

I'm not talking about the age. I'm talking about the milf factor some are mentioning. Anyway, I'm only kidding.

Catherine Zeta Jones for Aunt May!!!

Actually if she is Aunt May, Michael Douglas could be Uncle Ben. That's an actual case of someone marrying a much younger woman. Michael Douglas's Uncle Ben could say to Peter with his dying breath "Peter, remember what I always taught you. Greed is good... I mean, with great power comes great... money... I mean responsibility."

Hey everyone, don't post much but since I am looking forward to this film I figured I would.

I think Julianne Moore would be an interesting choice for Aunt May. If you saw her in "Chloe" she did very well. She is talented and can be made to look older. She is also 49 and it seems she could fit an "Ultimate" type of Aunt may. If you ever purchased or read the first "Ultimate Spider-Man" TPB, you will see the concept sketched they made and how she seemed more like an actual aunt than a grandmother. In the pics during the Venom arc, we see Peter's parent and aside from the hair colors, Aunt May looked every bit of a mid aged woman as Peter's mother. I feel that 616 Marvel has unfortunately aged aunt may TOO much. Not interested in seeing that in the sequel.

I would also think a now older looking Michael Keaton would play off her and Garfield well

Imagine. Aunt May is upset at Peter and Keaton as Ben follows him out the house,
"I know things haven't always been easy Peter but you have to understand we have always given you all the love and encouragement you have ever needed"-Ben
"I know, it's just sometimes things change and so do people. I'm not who I once was"-Peter
"Give your Aunt time, trust me everything will be ok"-Ben

Once again just my opinion, please let me know what you think.
