Sci-Fi Avatar: The Way Of Water

My friend thought this was related to the Nickelodeon series by the title alone.

Thing I remember positively about Avatar was packed experience going to cinema. Never witnessed such event before. Teathers were packed for days in advance. Crowds in lobby. I mean cinema was each day for days just playing just Avatar on all projections from 2D to Imax to 3D and so.

I dont even remember how my friend even managed to obtain 3D tickets for few of us. And it's not like we got to see it first week either.

Also movie effects were unreal watching it on big screen in 3D. It was I think my first 3D experience in cinema. After that I tried watch following year couple of 3D movies and neither could hold a candle to it Given I just said all this I am not sure sequel can bring same experience again. Even if movie ends up being a lot better than first one.

And I remember thinking sequel is just 2 or 3 years away. When they announced next 4 or 5 coming up. Shooting most of them back to back...

It’s clearly made a cultural impact, just not amongst people who base their personalities around their favorite things. My ****in’ Grandma fondly remembers Avatar and she saw it once 13 years ago.
There's a difference between "remembering" something and having an actual impact.
But it's whatever, as I said I don't get why people get so bothered when people say it had a lack of cultural impact

The hype is coming back after all these years away.
Exactly how I feel. And it seems like others are the same way. It didn't matter if Avatar wasn't in conversations a lot over the past decade plus.
What matters is that people seem to be excited about it now

I think you’ll always have that group that want to be part of the bigger conversation, but aren’t really fans to begin with.

Like people who watch every MCU film or show the moment they come out but kind of hate on it. Or with Star Trek or Star Wars. Like they do it out of loyalty to the brand or greater geek culture, but aren’t enjoying anything from it but they’ll always be the first one out with an opinion lol

And that’s not saying you can’t criticize these things, of course. Just there comes a point when *****ing about every little thing in, say, the Star Wars prequels yet owning them on DVD, bluray and digital copies and being able to recite it better than even fans of the property, there might be something else going on lol

I'll still never understand the people who don't like the first one but they'll be their opening night for the sequel.

This is going to be an extension of the first film. The same world, the same characters etc. If you go into this expecting something different, that's on you.
Agreed but I say that about everything

Like the people who hate the Transformers films but have seen all of them. People just wanna be mad. That or they wanna feel cool by hating on something

Tech Oscars would be absolutely zero surprise. Cameron is operating on a different level in some of those areas. Kind of frustrates me that many other top filmmakers aren’t as keen to push things in those areas.

Cameron wrote the book on modern day visual effects. The Abyss was the proof of concept but T2 changed everything. It was lightyears ahead of it's time.

So as I understand it, they want to make like 4 more movies right? Have they already started working on the next one? Because I don’t think one movie every 13 years is a good strategy if you want to keep using the same actors lol.

They finished filming Avatar 3 back in Dec 2020 and parts of 4 have been filmed.

Wow! Okay then, damn. That’s ambitious but I guess there really isn’t much financial risk with this project even with factors like Covid.

I think the release dates are already planned every two years so #3 December 2024, and then #4 December 2026. Of course that could change, but could also work in their favor like how December became Star Wars month for a while there.
